Pituitary blastoma is a rare, dysontogenetic hypophyseal tumor of infancy first described in 2008, strongly suggestive of DICER1 syndrome.

This work aims to describe genetic alterations, clinical courses, outcomes, and complications in all known pituitary blastoma cases.

A multi-institutional case series is presented from tertiary pediatric oncology centers.

Patients included children with pituitary blastoma.

Genetic testing, surgery, oncologic therapy, endocrine support are reported.

Outcome measures included survival, long-term morbidities, and germline and tumor DICER1 genotypes.

Seventeen pituitary blastoma cases were studied (10 girls and 7 boys); median age at diagnosis was 11 months (range, 2-24 months). Cushing syndrome was the most frequent presentation (n = 10). Cushingoid stigmata were absent in 7 children (2 with increased adrenocorticotropin [ACTH]; 5 with normal/unmeasured ACTH). Ophthalmoplegia and increased intracranial pressure were also observed. Surgical procedures included gry destructive tumor associated with high mortality. Surgical resection alone provides long-term disease control for some patients. Quality survival is possible with long-term neuroendocrine management.

Vitamin D deficiency was previously correlated with incidence and severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We investigated the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) level on admission and radiologic stage and outcome of COVID-19 pneumonia.

A retrospective observational trial was done on 186 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-infected individuals hospitalized from March 1, 2020, to April 7, 2020, with combined chest computed tomography (CT) and 25(OH)D measurement on admission. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to study if vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D <20 ng/mL) correlates with survival independently of confounding comorbidities.

Of the patients with COVID-19, 59% were vitamin D deficient on admission 47% of females and 67% of males. In particular, male patients with COVID-19 showed progressively lower 25(OH)D with advancing radiologic stage, with deficiency rates increasing from 55% in stage 1 to 74% in stage 3. A total of 430 patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer were included in this retrospective study. The fall risk assessment score was scored by nursing staffs on admission. We investigated the relationships between the fall risk assessment score and clinicopathological findings, postoperative outcomes and prognoses. We assigned patients with a fall risk assessment score ≥7 to the high-risk group (92 cases, 21.4%) and those with a fall risk assessment score <6 to the low-risk group (338 cases, 78.6%).

There were no significant differences between the two groups in pathological stage of gastric cancer and postoperative complications, but the high-risk group had significantly longer postoperative hospital stays than the low-risk group (P<0.001). The overall and the relapse-free survival rates in the high-risk group were significantly lower than those in the low-risk group. The high-risk group was one of the independent poor prognostic factors for overall survival, with a hazard ratio of 2.91 (P≤0.001) in univariate analysis and a hazard ratio of 2.74 (P=0.008) in multivariate analysis.

We cloned the chemosensory protein AmalCSP5 from antennae of the apple buprestid beetle (Agrilus mali Matsumura), a serious invasive pest of wild apple trees. Expression profiling showed that AmalCSP5 was expressed in various tissues, suggesting its significance in multiple physiological activities and behaviors of A. mali. AmalCSP5 was preferentially expressed in female antennae and male abdomens. AmalCSP5 was able to bind a variety of test volatiles, especially alcohols and esters. AmalCSP5 exhibited good binding affinity for all five test secondary compounds (i.e., procyanidin, phlorizin, kaemferol, chlorogenic acid, and rutin), suggesting its preferential binding abilities to nonvolatile host plant secondary metabolites and critical roles in gustatory perception of nonvolatiles.
