Although patients with familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia (FH) have a high risk of early myocardial infarction (MI), the coronary artery disease (CAD) burden in FH patients with acute MI remains to be investigated.

The data for all consecutive patients hospitalized in 2012-2019 for an acute MI and who underwent coronary angiography were collected from a multicenter database (RICO database). FH (n = 120) was diagnosed using Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria (score ≥ 6). We compared the angiographic features of MI patients with and without FH (score 0-2) (n = 234) after matching for age, sex, and diabetes (12).

Although LDL-cholesterol was high (208 [174-239] mg/dl), less than half of FH patients had chronic statin treatment. When compared with non-FH patients, FH increased the extent of CAD (as assessed by SYNTAX score; P = 0.005), and was associated with more frequent multivessel disease (P = 0.004), multiple complex lesions (P = 0.022) and significant stenosis location on left circumflex and as secondary prevention.

Additionally, the demand for processed and ready-to-eat food has increased because of the rapid growth of food-processing industries in developing economies. We produced α-amylase using Aspergillus oryzae and low-cost substrates obtained from edible oil cake, such as groundnut oil cake (GOC), coconut oil cake (COC), sesame oil cake (SOC) by solid-state fermentation. Using a hydrothermal method, spherical Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBs) with uniform size were prepared. The PBs exhibited good dispersion and stability in saline with an average hydrodynamic size of 110nm. The prepared PBs had a high photothermal conversion efficiency and photothermal stability. The PBs showed intrinsic ROS scavenging properties in vitro. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of PBs were also observed in vivo. Assessment of toxicity and endoplasmic reticulum stress-inducing ability showed that PBs did not induce an inflammatory response. Tissues of major organs of mice stained with hematoxylin-eosin showed no significant damage, indicating good biocompatibility and safety of PBs.

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a common neurological disease present in the ageing population that is associated with an increased risk of dementia and stroke. Damage to white matter tracts compromises the substrate for interneuronal connectivity. Analysing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can reveal dysfunctional patterns of brain connectivity and contribute to explaining the pathophysiology of clinical phenotypes in CSVD.

This systematic review provides an overview of methods and results of recent resting-state functional MRI studies in patients with CSVD. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) protocol, a systematic search of the literature was performed.

Of 493 studies that were screened, 44 reports were identified that investigated resting-state fMRI connectivity in the context of cerebral small vessel disease. The risk of bias and heterogeneity of results were moderate to high. Patterns associated with CSVD included disturbed connectivity within and between intrinsic brain networks, in particular the default mode, dorsal attention, frontoparietal control, and salience networks; decoupling of neuronal activity along an anterior-posterior axis; and increases in functional connectivity in the early stage of the disease.

The recent literature provides further evidence for a functional disconnection model of cognitive impairment in CSVD. We suggest that the salience network might play a hitherto underappreciated role in this model. Low quality of evidence and the lack of preregistered multi-centre studies remain challenges to be overcome in the future.

Cutis verticis gyrate (CVG) is a rare morphologic syndrome that presents with hypertrophy and folding of the scalp. CVG can be classified into three forms primary essential, primary non-essential, and secondary. Cerebriform intradermal nevus (CIN) is a rare cause of secondary CVG. We are here to report a rare case of CVG with an underlying CIN and discuss the clinical course, treatment options, and critical screening guidelines for these patients.

A 25year-old male patient presented with a chief complaint of generalized hair loss in the scalp parietaloccipital region for a duration of 1year and the hair loss area was occasionally accompanied by mild itching. The hair loss started gradually and worsened over time. In addition, he had scalp skin folds resembling the ridge and furrow of the cerebral cortex in the parietaloccipital region since birth. Physical examination revealed hypertrophy and formation of folds in the parietal-occipital area, forming 5 to 6 furrows and ridges. This study uses pooled analysis to explore the in-depth effects of pemafibrate, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α modulator (SPPARMα) already known to decrease elevated triglycerides, on glucose metabolism and liver function in patients with hypertriglyceridemia.

We performed a post-hoc analysis of six phase 2 and phase 3 Japanese randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials that examined the effects of daily pemafibrate 0.1 mg, 0.2 mg, and 0.4 mg on glucose metabolism markers and liver function tests (LFTs). Primary endpoints were changes in glucose metabolism markers and LFTs from baseline after 12 weeks of pemafibrate treatment. All adverse events and adverse drug reactions were recorded as safety endpoints.

The treatment of a displaced proximal humeral fracture is still a matter of controversy. The purpose of this study was to report outcomes at a long-term follow-up after fixation augmentation using peek (polyether-ether-ketone) cage and locking compression plate (LCP).

A total of 27 patients (average age 53.8years, range 19-86years) were treated with peek cage and LCP. All of them had a minimum radiographic and clinical follow-up of 1years. Outcomes were assessed using the Constant-Murley score (CMS), disability of the arm, shoulder and hand (DASH) score. Complications were also recorded during follow-up.

The average follow-up was 28months (range 12-48months). The mean functional outcomes were as follows CMS, 73.3 (range 61-86); DASH, 45.9 (range 27-68). A total of 4 patients had complications osteonecrosis developed in one patient, loss of reduction was observed in 1 patient and stiffness was occurred in two patients.

The use of peek cage and LCP has been a valuable option in the treatment of proximal humeral fractures.
