Sensory organs are not only involved in passively transmitting sensory input, but are also involved in actively seeking it. Some sensory organs move dynamically to allow highly prioritized input to be detected by their most sensitive parts. Such 'active sensing' systems engage in pursuing relevant input, relying on attentional prioritizations. However, pursuing input may not always be advantageous. Task-irrelevant input may be distracting and interfere with task performance. We hypothesize that an efficient 'active sensing' mechanism should be able to not only pursue relevant input but also to predict irrelevant input and avoid it. Moreover, we hypothesize that this mechanism should be evident even when the task is non-visual and all visual information acts as a distractor. In this study, we demonstrate the existence of a predictive 'overt avoidance' mechanism in vision. In two experiments, participants were asked to perform a continuous mental-arithmetic task while occasionally being presented with task-irrelevant crowded displays limited to one quadrant of a screen. The locations of these visual stimuli were constant within a block but varied between blocks. Results show that gaze was consistently shifted away from the predicted location of distraction, even prior to its appearance, confirming the existence of a predictive 'overt avoidance' mechanism in vision. Based on these findings, we propose a conceptual model to explain how an 'active sensing' system, hardwired to explore, can overcome this drive when presented with distracting information. According to the model, distraction is handled through a dual mechanism of suppression and avoidance processes that are causally linked. This framework demonstrates how perception and motion work together to approach relevant information while avoiding irrelevant distraction.Previous studies have demonstrated that silica nanoparticle (SiNP) exposure induces pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, yet their transportation and degradation in vivo have not been fully elucidated. From the perspective of reproduction, this study was implemented to examine the uterine accumulation of SiNP and explore its reproductive toxicity and pathogenic mechanisms. TMP269 solubility dmso First, we coupled FITC onto SiNPs and intratracheally instilled them into pregnant mice on the fifth gestational day, and the toxic effect of SiNP was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. It was found that SiNP penetrated the trophoblast membrane, leading to apoptosis and suppression of cell proliferation, tube formation, and invasion in a dose-dependent manner. Mechanistically, SiNP dysregulated the expression of Scd1, Slc27a1, and Cpt1a, and induced over synthesis and efflux obstruction of fatty acid through the PPARγ signaling pathway. The downregulation of Caspase-3 triggered apoptosis of trophoblast, which was causally associated with intracellular fatty acid accumulation as revealed by the correlation analysis. Besides, SiNP induced uterine inflammation in vivo, which aggravated with the observation prolongation within 24 h. Overall, SiNPs were visualized by coupling with FITC, and the uterine accumulation of SiNP induced fatty acid metabolic disorder, biological dysfunction, and trophoblast apoptosis, which were mediated in part by the PPARγ signaling pathway. These findings would contribute to understanding the environmental impacts of SiNP better, as well as the development of control measures for environmental pollution.Atrazine, a potent herbicide for weeds removal during the growing season, has been widely used in China. It is known to be distributed in aquatic ecosystems with a long half-life, thus presenting a potential risk to species and consumers. This study analyzed the concentrations of degraded atrazine residues in marine organisms (N = 129) including 3 species of mollusks, 2 species of crustaceans, and 15 species of fish from a semi-enclosed bay, Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), adjacent to the Northwest Pacific Ocean in China. The corresponding trophic magnification factors (TMF), bioaccumulation factors (BCFs), and subsequent risks to final consumers were also determined. The results showed an average atrazine concentration of (0.301 ± 0.03) ng g-1 and (0.305 ± 0.04) ng g-1 in fish and invertebrates, respectively. The BCFs were (5.23 ± 1.75) L kg-1 and (5.81 ± 1.31) L kg-1 for fish and invertebrates, respectively. Atrazine was significantly bio-diluted in JZB through the sampled marine organisms with increasing trophic levels, with a TMF value below 1 (P less then 0.01). An analysis of the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) predicted that less then 0.02% of species were exposed to a dissolved concentration of atrazine (57.88 ng L-1) that would lead to detrimental effects, while risk quotients predicted low long-term risks for species in the bay. Finally, people with a diet limited to species from JZB were found to face no associated health risk due to a significantly small daily intake and target hazard quotient of atrazine. The corresponding non-carcinogenic effect showed no significant risk from seafood consumption. The 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11; WHO, 2018) describes two distinct trauma related disorders, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (CPTSD). This review aims to summarise and synthesize evidence from factor analytic and mixture modelling studies that have investigated the latent structure of the International Trauma Questionnaire. A systematic search of PsycInfo, Web of Science, Scopus and Pubmed databases was conducted to identify relevant articles. Thirty-three studies met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. The latent structure of the ITQ was best represented by two models; a correlated six-factor model (Re-experiencing, Avoidance, Threat, Affect Dysregulation, Negative Self Concept, and Disturbed Relationships) and a two-factor second-order model (PTSD and Disturbances in Self-Organization). Mixture model studies consistently identified distinct classes representing those displaying PTSD and CPTSD symptoms. Numerous studies demonstrated support for the factorial and discriminant validity of PTSD and CPTSD when analysed in conjunction with other variables. Overall, support was found for the conceptual coherence of PTSD and CPTSD as empirically distinguishable disorders, as measured by the ITQ. The available evidence demonstrates that the ITQ is a valid measure of ICD-11 PTSD and CPTSD. Recommendations for future research are included.

To determine the feasibility of measuring scalp-recorded, flash-evoked, high-frequency EEG oscillations (F-HFOs) using a relatively simple technique. Furthermore, to assess whether F-HFOs are enhanced in photosensitive epileptic patients and if they might be proposed as a putative non-provocative biomarker of photosensitivity.

We studied 19 photosensitive patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy, and 22 controls matched for demographic features. We extracted F-HFOs from the broadband scalp flash-visual evoked potential (b F-VEP) through appropriate filtering. We measured F-HFO amplitude, number and latency. Also, we carried out a time-frequency domain spectral F-HFO analysis. Inter-group statistics was performed. Within-groups, F-HFO features were correlated to the b F-VEP.

The N3-N3

wave of the b F-VEP was significantly (p = 0.01) larger in patients compared to controls. The same was true for the inter-group F-HFO amplitude (p = 0.01). F-HFOs showed two main spectral peaks (∼88 and ∼125 Hz), whose power was greater (p = 0.001) in patients than in controls. The ∼88 Hz peak power exceeded the upper normal range in 15/19 patients. Patients showed a significant (p = 0.04) correlation between the ∼88 Hz peak power and the size of the N3-N3

wave.

A simplified F-HFO measurement proved feasible. In patients, F-HFOs were enhanced in terms of both size and spectral power, suggesting a role in the generation of the photoparoxysmal response. Some spectral features of the F-HFOs may be proposed as a putative non-provocative marker of epileptic photosensitivity.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders affecting children. As a chronic disease, it affects not only the child but also the entire family. The attitudes towards the children suffering from epilepsy and the skills required to deal with acute seizures are influenced by the level of knowledge the parents have about that disease.

To evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and skills toward epilepsy among parents of children diagnosed with epilepsy in comparison to parents of children without epilepsy.

Data collected through a structured questionnaire that was designed, translated into Arabic, and analyzed statistically in a cross-sectional study for a total of 534 Egyptian parents as two groups, group I (n = 223) consist of parents with children with epilepsy and group II (n = 311) of parents with children without epilepsy. Parents with children with epilepsy were recruited from the Paediatric Neurology Outpatient Clinic of Alexandria University Children's Hospital (AUCH). Parents with childres required for the management of acute seizures were found among both parents of children with epilepsy and those with children without epilepsy. Educational programs are needed to eliminate all the misconceptions and myths and to change attitudes of the Egyptian parents towards epilepsy.

The French colorectal cancer screening program is based on a fecal immunochemical test, followed by colonoscopy in case of positivity. The benefit of adding a concomitant upper endoscopy to detect upper digestive lesions (precancerous or others) is still debated. Our aim was to evaluate the frequency of upper digestive lesions detected by upper endoscopy performed concomitantly with colonoscopy following a positive fecal immunochemical test, and their impact on the patients' management (i.e., surveillance, medical treatment, endoscopic or surgical procedure).

Data of all the patients who consulted for a positive test between May 2016 and May 2019 in our center, and for whom concomitant upper endoscopy and colonoscopy were performed, were analyzed retrospectively. Patients with significant history of upper gastrointestinal diseases or with current gastrointestinal symptoms were excluded.

One hundred patients were included [median age (min-max) 62 (50-75), men 64%]. Macroscopic and/or microscopic upper diing in France. Further studies are necessary to confirm these results and to evaluate cost-effectiveness of this approach.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of hand massage and foot massage on fatigue in hemodialysis patients.

This randomized, controlled and quasi-experimental study was conducted between October 19, 2018 and February 11, 2019 with patients receiving hemodialysis therapy in the dialysis unit of a public hospital in Turkey. Data were collected using a Patient Identification Form and the Visual Analogue Scale for Fatigue. The study was carried out with 82 patients in three groups a hand massage group (n=27), a foot massage group (n=27) and a control group (n=28). The patients in the control group were not administered any treatments except for standard nursing interventions in the hemodialysis unit.

In between-groups comparison the hand and foot massage groups' mean fatigue score decreased after the application compared to that of the control group (p<0.05).

Hand and foot massage were found to reduce fatigue in patients receiving hemodialysis.
