Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) is a rare autoimmune disorder of neuromuscular transmission. The objective was to examine the efficacy and safety of 3,4-diaminopyridine (3,4-DAP) in patients with LEMS.

We searched several databases to identify relevant studies, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, MEDLINE, Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Specialized Register and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials(CENTRAL). The primary outcome, quantitative myasthenia gravis (QMG) score and the secondary outcome, compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) amplitude were pooled by meta-analysis.

Six randomised controlled trials (RCTs) involving 115 patients with LEMS were included. QMG score showed a significant decrease (improvement) of 2.76 points (95 % CI, -4.08 to -1.45, p < 0.001) after treatment with 3, 4-DAP. Moreover, the overall mean CMAP amplitude improved significantly in LEMS patients with 3, 4-DAP treatment, compared with placebo treatment (mean difference 1.34 mV, 95 % CI, 0.98 to 1.70, p < 0.001). The overall assessment of all included trials showed a low risk of bias and low heterogeneity.

Over the past decades, approaches for diagnosing and treating cancer have seen significant improvement. However, the variability of patient and tumor characteristics has limited progress on methods for prognosis prediction. The development of high-throughput omics technologies now provides multiple approaches for characterizing tumors. Although a large number of published studies have focused on integration of multi-omics data and use of pathway-level models for cancer prognosis prediction, there still exists a gap of knowledge regarding the prognostic landscape across multi-omics data for multiple cancer types using both gene-level and pathway-level predictors.

In this study, we systematically evaluated three often available types of omics data (gene expression, copy number variation and somatic point mutation) covering both DNA-level and RNA-level features. We evaluated the landscape of predictive performance of these three omics modalities for 33 cancer types in the TCGA using a Lasso or Group Lasso-pe the best predictive performance on either gene or pathway level. The Western Pacific Region (WPR) is exposed each year to seasonal influenza and is often the source of new influenza virus variants and novel pathogen emergence. National influenza surveillance systems play a critical role in detecting emerging viruses, monitoring influenza epidemics, improving public disease awareness and promoting pandemic preparedness, but vary widely across WPR countries. The aim of this study is to improve existing influenza surveillance systems by systematically comparing selected WPR influenza surveillance systems.

Three national influenza surveillance systems with different levels of development (Australia, China and Malaysia) were compared and their adherence to World Health Organization (WHO) guidance was evaluated using a structured framework previously tested in several European countries consisting of seven surveillance sub-systems, 19 comparable outcomes and five evaluation criteria. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer in the world. It is the commonest type of cancer in Ethiopia. Cognitive problems are common among breast cancer patients. The study aimed to assess cognitive functioning and its associated factors among breast cancer patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 2020.

Institution-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted. Study subjects were 117 breast cancer patients on chemotherapy and 117 women without breast cancer who volunteered for the study. Data was collected from May-June 2020. The Mini-mental status exam (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive functioning. Data were entered into Epi Data version 4.6.0.2 and analyzed using STATA version 14 software. Univariable and multivariable linear regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with cognitive functioning. A two-tailed p-value less than 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance.

Brain metastases were rare in esophageal cancer patients. Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, the present study investigated the incidence, risk and prognostic factors of brain metastases in esophageal cancer patients.

Retrieving esophageal cancer patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 from the SEER database, univariable and multivariable logistic and cox regression models were used to investigate the risk factors for brain metastases development and prognosis, respectively. The brain metastases predicting nomogram was constructed, evaluated and validated. The overall survival (OS) of patients with brain metastases was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier method.

A total of 34,107 eligible esophageal cancer patients were included and 618 of them were diagnosed with brain metastases (1.8%). The median survival of the brain metastatic esophageal cancer patients was 5 (95% CI 5-7) months. The presence of bone metastases and lung metastases were the homogeneously associated factors for the development and prognosis of brain metastases in esophageal cancer patients. Patients younger than 65 years, American Indian/Alaska Native race (vs. White), overlapping lesion (vs. Upper third), esophageal adenocarcinoma histology subtype, higher N stage, and liver metastases were positively associated with brain metastases occurrence. The calibration curve, ROC curve, and C-index exhibited good performance of the nomogram for predicting brain metastases.
