The purpose of this study was to estimate the heritability and genetic correlations of four biometric measurements and an overall score (OS) in the Sardinian Anglo-Arab horse (SAA); moreover, the effect of inbreeding on these traits was investigated. A dataset with 43,624 horses (27,052 females and 16,572 males) was provided by the Agricultural Research Agency of Sardinia (AGRIS). Cannon bone circumference (BC), chest girth (CG), shoulder length (SL), and withers height (WH) were measured on 6033 SAA horses born in Sardinia between 1967 and 2005; beside the measurements, an overall score (OS) was taken comparing the morphology of each horse to an "ideal type" that is scored out of 100. The mean value is 20.5 cm for BC, 185.9 cm for CG, 67.6 cm for SL, 160.8 cm for WH, and 73.2 for the OS. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.78 to 0.23. The results allow to foresee high genetic progress through the breeding programs. The most affected trait by the inbreeding rate seems to only be the withers height. The aim of this study was to create a mathematical approach for blood hemodynamic description with the use of brightness analysis. Medical data was collected from three male patients aged from 45 to 65 years with acute type IIIb aortic dissection that started proximal to the left subclavian artery and involved the renal arteries. For the recognition of wall dissection areas Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data were applied. Selleckchem Y-27632 The distance from descending aorta to the diaphragm was analyzed. Each time Feret (DF) and Hydraulic (DHy) diameter were calculated. Moreover, an average brightness (BAV) was analyzed. Finally, to describe blood hemodynamic in the area of aortic wall dissection, mathematical function combining difference in brightness value and diameter for each computed tomography (CT) scan was calculated. The results indicated that DF described common duct more accurately compare to DHy. While, DHy described more accurately true and false ducts. Each time when connection of true and false duct appeared, true duct had lower brightness compare to common duct and false duct. Moreover, false duct characterized with higher brightness compare to common duct. In summary, the proposed algorithm mimics changes in brightness value for patients with acute type IIIb aortic dissection.INTRODUCTION Obesity in pregnant women increases the incidence of pregnancy-induced comorbidities and the rate of operative deliveries. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY As bariatric surgery is the reference method of treatment of obesity, we wanted to evaluate its influence on the course of pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data was collected from 627 female patients after bariatric surgery, of whom 107 had a history of pregnancy after the surgery, and 345 non-bariatric patients who had a delivery at a tertiary perinatal center. Sixty-one cases were matched (11) with controls for age, pre-pregnancy BMI and presence of pre-pregnancy comorbidities. The main endpoints were gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), small (SGA) and large for gestational age infants (LGA) and cesarean sections (CS). RESULTS Patients after bariatric procedures were significantly less likely to have GDM (19.67%/37.7%; p = 0.0433), PIH (11.47%/16.39%; p = 0.6072) and preterm delivery (13.11%/37.7%; p = 0.0026). The CS rate was higher (57.38%/40.98%; p = 0.0987). There was an increased risk of SGA (18.03%/13.11%; p = 0.6072) and a decreased risk of LGA (6.56%/16.39%; p = 0.146). CONCLUSIONS Patients after bariatric surgery have a decreased risk of pregnancy-induced comorbidities, preterm deliveries and LGA infants, with an increase in rate of CS and SGA infants compared to general population matched for pre-pregnancy BMI, age and presence of pre-pregnancy comorbidities.Epidemiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is based on staging systems relying on color fundus photography (CFP). We aim to compare AMD staging using CFP to multimodal imaging with optical coherence tomography (OCT), infra-red (IR), and fundus autofluorescence (FAF), in a large cohort from the Epidemiologic AMD Coimbra Eye Study. All imaging exams from the participants of this population-based study were classified by a central reading center. CFP images were graded according to the International Classification and Grading System for AMD and staged with Rotterdam classification. Afterward, CFP images were reviewed with OCT, IR, and FAF and stage update was performed if necessary. Early and late AMD prevalence was compared in a total of 1616 included subjects. In CFP-based grading, the prevalence was 14.11% for early AMD (n = 228) and 1.05% (n = 17) for late AMD, nine cases (0.56%) had neovascular AMD (nAMD) and eight (0.50%) geographic atrophy (GA). Using multimodal grading, the prevalence increased to 14.60% for early AMD (n = 236) and 1.61% (n = 26) for late AMD, with 14 cases (0.87%) of nAMD and 12 (0.74%) of GA. AMD staging was more accurate with the multimodal approach and this was especially relevant for late AMD. We propose that multimodal imaging should be adopted in the future to better estimate and compare epidemiological data in different populations.Cigarette smoke (CS) exacerbates symptoms in Crohn's disease (CD) patients while protecting those with ulcerative colitis (UC). CD has been associated with immuno-dysregulation, mucosal dysfunction, and infection. Among the CD-debated pathogens are Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), adherent invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC), and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The mechanism of how CS modulates nicotinic acetylcholine receptor-α7 (α7nAChR) and elicits inflammatory response in CD-like macrophages is unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of CS/nicotine on macrophages infected with CD-associated pathogens. We measured apoptosis, bacterial viability, macrophage polarization, and gene expression/cytokine levels involved in macrophage response to nicotine/CS extracts from Havana-Leave extract (HLE-nicotine rich) and germplasm line of Maryland tobacco (LAMD-nicotine less). Nicotine (4 µg/mL) and HLE extracts (0.18%) significantly favored anti-inflammatory response in macrophages (increased CD-206 (M2) and IL-10, and decreased M1/M2 ratio; p less then 0.
