rhamnosus GG during microencapsulation and gastrointestinal environment.Purpose This study aims to investigate the effects of dysphonic voice on speech intelligibility in Cantonese-speaking adults. Method Speech recordings from three speakers with dysphonia secondary to phonotrauma and three speakers with healthy voices were presented to 30 healthy listeners (15 men and 15 women; Mage = 22.7 years) under six noise conditions (signal-to-noise ratio [SNR] -10, SNR -5, SNR 0, SNR +5, SNR +10) and quiet conditions. The speech recordings were composed of sentences with five different lengths five syllables, eight syllables, 10 syllables, 12 syllables, and 15 syllables. The effects of speaker's voice quality, background noise condition, and sentence length on speech intelligibility were examined. Speech intelligibility scores were calculated based on the listener's correct judgment of the number of syllables heard as a percentage of the total syllables in each stimulus. Results Dysphonic voices, as compared to healthy voices, were significantly more affected by background noise. Speech presented with dysphonic voices was significantly less intelligible than speech presented with healthy voices under unfavorable SNR conditions (SNR -10, SNR -5, and SNR 0 conditions). However, there was no sufficient evidence to suggest effects of sentence length on intelligibility, regardless of the speaker's voice quality or the level of background noise. Conclusions This study provides empirical data on the impacts of dysphonic voice on speech intelligibility in Cantonese speakers. Social relationships and meaningful activities performed by PWA are also crucial to promote positive psychosocial well-being. link2 As a precautionary measure specific to the COVID-19 pandemic, most PWA worldwide have generally followed the guidelines of going out less, restricting when and where to gather with friends and peers, reducing social activities, and maintaining appropriate social distance; these acts are contrary to the traditional principles of managing aphasia. This article aims to (a) highlight and add to our understanding of issues related to the impact of the currently evolving COVID-19 pandemic on PWA, (b) direct readers to relevant reports in the literature of telerehabilitation for aphasia to look for useful information regarding remote assessment and therapy to be considered during the pandemic, (c) summarize support initiatives developed and resources compiled thus far as well as provide links for caregivers and PWA to find more information about COVID-19 in their communities, and (d) offer recommendations to potentially move the field of aphasia research and clinical PWA services forward in a positive way to endure the pandemic and in the forthcoming post-COVID world. Conclusions At present, there are significant knowledge gaps regarding the short and long-term impacts of COVID-19 on PWA and their caregivers. It is crucial that different stakeholders be sensitive and flexible when addressing the psychosocial and rehabilitation needs of PWA to mitigate the negative effects during and after the COVID-19 era.Background Hospitalists at our institution have taken on most non-intensive care unit (ICU) coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) care. Based on sparse research, our institution developed a protocol for ordering labs for this patient population, including routine admission labs in addition to eight COVID-19-specific daily labs. The study goal is to determine if COVID-19-specific admission labs have any prognostic value beyond that provided by routine admission labs and vitals, and costs of labs with no prognostic value.Methods We retrospectively reviewed adult patients admitted with COVID-19 from 3/2020 to 7/2020. Outcomes were mortality, ICU stay, and length of hospitalization. link3 Multivariable logistic and linear regression were used to determine if COVID-19-specific admission labs have any prognostic value beyond that provided by vitals and routine admission labs. COVID-19-specific labs were d-Dimer, fibrinogen, ferritin, LDH, CK, pro-BNP, troponin, and CRP. Multivariable models included all routine admission labs and vitals. COVID-19-specific admission labs were included in the multivariable models if the p-value was less then 0.05 in the univariable analysis.Results 331 patients met study criteria, inpatient mortality was 13.0%, 52.4% of patients required ICU stays and the average length of hospitalization was 8.9 days. COVID-19-specific labs showed no additional prognostic value for mortality. CRP, LDH, and d-Dimer provided additional prognostic information for ICU stay. CRP≥100 mg/dL and LDH≥900 U/L were associated with increased length of hospitalization.Conclusion Only 3 of 8 admission COVID-19-specific labs recommended by our institution's protocol had additional prognostic value beyond that provided by routine labs and vitals. The total cost of non-prognostic COVID-19-specific labs during the study period was $75,874.Three bacterial species isolated from whole body extracts of the greater wax moth larvae, Galleria mellonella, were evaluated for their ability to utilize low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as a sole carbon source in vitro. These bacteria were identified as Lysinibacillusfusiformis, Bacillus aryabhattai, and Microbacterium oxydans. Their ability to biodegrade LDPE was assessed by growth curves, cell biomass production, polyethylene (PE) weight loss, and the presence of LDPE hydrolysis products in the growth media. Consortia of these bacteria with three other bacteria previously shown to degrade LDPE (Cupriavidus necator H16, Pseudomonas putida LS46, and Pseudomonas putida IRN22) were also tested. Growth curves of the bacteria utilizing LDPE as a sole carbon source revealed a peak in cell density after 24 h. Cell densities declined by 48 h but slowly increased again to different extents, depending on the bacteria. Incubation of LDPE with bacteria isolated from greater wax moth larvae had significant effects on bacterial cell mass production and weight loss of LDPE in PE-containing media. The bacterial consortia were better able to degrade LDPE than were the individual species alone. Gas chromatographic analyses revealed the presence of linear alkanes and other unknown putative LDPE hydrolysis products in some of bacterial culture media.Interaction-Transformation (IT) is a new representation for Symbolic Regression that reduces the space of solutions to a set of expressions that follow a specific structure. The potential of this representation was illustrated in prior work with the algorithm called SymTree. This algorithm starts with a simple linear model and incrementally introduces new transformed features until a stop criterion is met. While the results obtained by this algorithm were competitive with the literature, it had the drawback of not scaling well with the problem dimension. This paper introduces a mutation only Evolutionary Algorithm, called ITEA, capable of evolving a population of IT expressions. One advantage of this algorithm is that it enables the user to specify the maximum number of terms in an expression. In order to verify the competitiveness of this approach, ITEA is compared to linear, nonlinear and Symbolic Regression models from the literature. The results indicate that ITEA is capable of finding equal or better approximations than other Symbolic Regression models while being competitive to state-of-the-art non-linear models. Additionally, since this representation follows a specific structure, it is possible to extract the importance of each original feature of a data set as an analytical function, enabling us to automate the explanation of any prediction. In conclusion, ITEA is competitive when comparing to regression models with the additional benefit of automating the extraction of additional information of the generated models.Sexual prejudice toward men who have sex with men (MSM) is a pressing concern in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Given the high HIV infection risk among this population, sexual prejudice perpetuated by healthcare providers, affects access to and willingness of MSM to seek HIV care services. However, data on healthcare providers' attitudes towards MSM in SSA are limited, and there are no locally-adapted measures of sexual prejudice. We adapted a scale to measure sexual prejudice with a sample of 147 healthcare providers in western Kenya. Results from exploratory factor analysis revealed a single-factor structure. The scale demonstrated high internal consistency with Cronbach's α = 0.91. Healthcare providers who had prior interpersonal contact with MSM, had ever been trained on counselling MSM, and had higher knowledge about MSM health needs reported lower sexual prejudice scores, compared with peers who lacked these experiences (p  less then  0.001). In contrast, healthcare providers who had experienced secondary stigma (negative judgments from peers and community) for providing care to MSM reported higher scores of sexual prejudice scale (p  less then  0.001) compared with providers who had not experienced secondary stigma. The scale provides a contextualised tool to assess healthcare providers' attitudes toward MSM in Kenya and countries in SSA with similar cultural norms.In recent years, our perception of chromatin structure and organization in the cell nucleus has changed in fundamental ways. A comprehensive understanding of the structural and functional interactions that regulate cell cycle and cell type specific nuclear functions appears within reach, but it requires the integration of top-down and bottom-up approachs. In this review, I present an update on nuclear architecture studies with an emphasis on organization and the controversy regarding the physical state of chromatin in cells.We used a distributed-language model to examine the moral language employed by U.S. political elites. In Study 1, we analyzed 687,360 Twitter messages (tweets) posted by accounts belonging to Democratic and Republican members of Congress from 2016 to 2018. In Study 2, we analyzed 2,630,688 speeches given on the floor of the House and Senate from 1981 to 2017. We found that partisan differences in moral-language use shifted over time as the parties gained or lost political power. Overall, lower political power was associated with greater use of moral language for both Democrats and Republicans. On Twitter, Democrats used more moral language in the period after Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election. In Congressional transcripts, both Democrats and Republicans used more of most kinds of moral language when they were in the minority.
