Background The coronary artery calcium score (CACS) is a powerful tool for cardiovascular risk stratification. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) allows for a more distinct analysis of atherosclerosis. The aim of the study was to assess gender differences in the atherosclerosis profile of CTA in patients with a CACS of zero. Methods A total of 1451 low- to intermediate-risk patients (53 ± 11 years; 51% females) with CACS less then 1.0 Agatston units (AU) who underwent CTA and CACS were included. Males and females were 11 propensity score-matched. CTA was evaluated for stenosis severity (Coronary Artery Disease - Reporting and Data System (CAD-RADS) 0-5 minimal less then 25%, mild 25-49%, moderate 50-69%, severe ≥70%), mixed-plaque burden (G-score), and high-risk plaque (HRP) criteria (low-attenuation plaque, spotty calcification, napkin-ring sign, and positive remodeling). All-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and major cardiovascular events (MACEs) were collected. Results Among the patients, 88.8% had a CACS of 0 and 11.2% had an ultralow CACS of 0.1-0.9 AU. More males than females (32.1% vs. 20.3%; p less then 0.001) with a CACS of 0 had atherosclerosis, while, among those with an ultralow CACS, there was no difference (88% vs. 87.1%). Nonobstructive CAD (25.9% vs. 16.2%; p less then 0.001), total plaque burden (2.2 vs. 1.4; p less then 0.001), and HRP were found more often in males (p less then 0.001). After a follow-up of mean 6.6 ± 4.2 years, all-cause mortality was higher in females (3.5% vs. 1.8%, p = 0.023). Cardiovascular mortality and MACEs were low (0.2% vs. 0%; p = 0.947 and 0.3% vs. 0.6%; p = 0.790) for males vs. females, respectively. Females were more often symptomatic for chest pain (70% vs. 61.6%; p = 0.004). (4) Conclusions In patients with a CACS of 0, males had a higher prevalence of atherosclerosis, a higher noncalcified plaque burden, and more HRP criteria. Nonetheless, females had a worse long-term outcome and were more frequently symptomatic.Defoliation and cluster thinning are of practical importance in a control of the grapevine source-sink balance, cluster architecture, microclimate and berry composition. Nevertheless, their effectiveness on wine composition is unexplored. In this work, the impacts of preflowering (T1), after berry set (T2), and veraison defoliation (T3) and cluster thinning (T4), on yield components, grape and wine composition of cv. Trnjak are given. Implemented techniques significantly reduced yield and affected grape and wine components in comparison to untreated control (C). Despite lowest number of clusters ensured by cluster thinning, defoliation at veraison had lowest yield. Defoliations improved cluster architecture parameters. Highest berry per se was in preflowering T1 and lowest at veraison T3 defoliation. Berries of T1 had lowest sugar content (19.47 °Brix) while T3 had highest (22.3 °Brix), and the reverse is seen in total acidity highest in T1 (6.12 g/L) and lowest in T3 (5.01 g/L). Wines of early defoliations (T1 and T2) had lowest alcohol and highest anthocyanin concentration. Both techniques applied at veraison produced wines with lower anthocyanins and flavonols than those obtained without any intervention (C). In conclusion, the early defoliations (T1 and T2) improve yield and wine composition of cv. Trnjak in the Mediterranean region of Croatia.Scant attention has been given to understanding the impact of creaming stability on the final structure of semi-sweet biscuits, an aspect that has traditionally concerned the biscuit industry. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the creaming phase stability on the quality attributes of rotary-molded biscuits. Doughs were formulated with 10.2% of fat (wet basis) and 16.3% of sucrose (w.b.), using two sucrose particle sizes, which were either added directly or after dilution in water at different concentrations. Additionally, the creaming phase was prepared using either a low-shear or a high-shear mixer. The results show that an aqueous-phase migration occurred when the creaming was blended in a low-shear mixer, when using either powdered sucrose or granular sucrose diluted in water at a high concentration. The phase separation was inhibited with the high-shear mixer, which provided a stable creaming. Notwithstanding the variation in creaming stability, no differences were observed in hardness, aeration, sweetness, color and noise intensity. Additionally, the micro-CT analysis revealed that biscuits had a similar microstructure (air porosity and thickness of biscuit walls) when they were prepared with either an unstable or a stable creaming phase. Consequently, creaming stability does not seem to affect the structure and the most relevant sensory attributes of rotary-molded biscuits under this set of experimental conditions, which are representative of those used by the industry for this product category.Samples from a high-dimensional first-order auto-regressive process generated by an independently and identically distributed random innovation sequence are observed by a sender which can communicate only finitely many bits per unit time to a receiver. The receiver seeks to form an estimate of the process value at every time instant in real-time. We consider a time-slotted communication model in a slow-sampling regime where multiple communication slots occur between two sampling instants. We propose a successive update scheme which uses communication between sampling instants to refine estimates of the latest sample and study the following question Is it better to collect communication of multiple slots to send better refined estimates, making the receiver wait more for every refinement, or to be fast but loose and send new information in every communication opportunity? We show that the fast but loose successive update scheme with ideal spherical codes is universally optimal asymptotically for a large dimension. However, most practical quantization codes for fixed dimensions do not meet the ideal performance required for this optimality, and they typically will have a bias in the form of a fixed additive error. Interestingly, our analysis shows that the fast but loose scheme is not an optimal choice in the presence of such errors, and a judiciously chosen frequency of updates outperforms it.
The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of a simulated heat-wave on the labour productivity and physiological strain experienced by workers.
Seven males were confined for ten days in controlled ambient conditions. A familiarisation day was followed by three (pre, during, and post-heat-wave) 3-day periods. During each day volunteers participated in a simulated work-shift incorporating two physical activity sessions each followed by a session of assembly line task. Conditions were hot (work 35.4 °C; rest 26.3 °C) during, and temperate (work 25.4 °C; rest 22.3 °C) pre and post the simulated heat-wave. Physiological, biological, behavioural, and subjective data were collected throughout the study.
The simulated heat-wave undermined human capacity for work by increasing the number of mistakes committed, time spent on unplanned breaks, and the physiological strain experienced by the participants. Early adaptations were able to mitigate the observed implications on the second and third days of the heat-wave, as well as impacting positively on the post-heat-wave period.

Prompted by previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, we examined possible gray-matter expansions in emotion-related and default mode networks in individuals with higher public or private self-consciousness. Vorinostat One hundred healthy young adults answered the Japanese version of the Self-Consciousness Scale (SCS) questionnaire and underwent structural MRI. A voxel-based morphometry analysis revealed that individuals scoring higher on the public SCS showed expansions of gray matter in the emotion-related regions of the cingulate and insular cortices and in the default mode network of the precuneus and medial prefrontal cortex. In addition, these gray-matter expansions were particularly related to the trait of "concern about being evaluated by others", which was one of the subfactors constituting public self-consciousness. Conversely, no relationship was observed between gray-matter volume in any brain regions and the private SCS scores. This is the first study showing that the personal trait of concern regarding public aspects of the self may cause long-term substantial structural changes in social brain networks.Marine pollution due to spillage of hydrocarbons represents a well-known current environmental problem. In order to recover the otherwise wasted oils and to prevent pollution damage, polyurethane foams are considered suitable materials for their ability to separate oils from sea-water and for their reusability. In this work we studied polyurethane foams filled with carbon nanofibers, in varying amounts, aimed at enhancing the selectivity of the material towards the oils and at improving the mechanical durability of the foam. Polyurethane-based foams were experimentally characterized by morphological, surface, and mechanical analyses (optical microscopy observation, contact angle measurement, absorption test according to ASTM F726-99 standard and compression fatigue tests according to ISO 24999 standard). Results indicated an increase in hydrophobic behavior and a good oleophilic character of the composite sponges besides an improved selective absorption of the foam toward oils in mixed water/oil media. The optimal filler amount was found to be around 1 wt% for the homogeneous distribution inside the polymeric foam. Finally, the fatigue test results showed an improvement of the mechanical properties of the foam with the growing carbon filler amount.Tryptophan is an essential amino acid critical for protein synthesis in humans that has emerged as a key player in the microbiota-gut-brain axis. It is the only precursor for the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is vital for the processing of emotional regulation, hunger, sleep, and pain, as well as colonic motility and secretory activity in the gut. Tryptophan catabolites from the kynurenine degradation pathway also modulate neural activity and are active in the systemic inflammatory cascade. Additionally, tryptophan and its metabolites support the development of the central and enteric nervous systems. Accordingly, dysregulation of tryptophan metabolites plays a central role in the pathogenesis of many neurologic and psychiatric disorders. Gut microbes influence tryptophan metabolism directly and indirectly, with corresponding changes in behavior and cognition. The gut microbiome has thus garnered much attention as a therapeutic target for both neurologic and psychiatric disorders where tryptophan and its metabolites play a prominent role.
