The learning environment (LE) influences students' behaviour, and predicts academic achievement, satisfaction and success. Measuring students' perception of the LE provides relevant information for curricular quality assurance. Zamaporvint In this study, a LE assessment was used to observe variations in students' LE perception throughout the curriculum, to illustrate the possible influence that preclinical training (Pt) and clinical training (Ct) have on students' learning experience.

All students in the six-year undergraduate dental programme (n=849) at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) were approached and divided into Pt and Ct groups according to their training phase in the curriculum. The LE was assessed using the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM), and the results were evaluated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software for distribution (Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test), internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and comparative analysis (one-way ANOVghout the curriculum, especially within the Pt-Ct transition, during the second and third years of the programme. An inferior LE perception was observed in every domain of the LE questionnaire within this transition showing a learning experience, which requires an educational intervention. link2 Zamaporvint Further research is required to better understand the educational needs of the Pt-Ct transition at this school.

Clinically, sleep bruxism is considered to be associated with the presence of tooth wear, but strong evidence is still lacking.

To examine whether an association exists between polysomnographic parameters, recorded from patients with possible sleep bruxism and tooth wear.

Sixty-three possible sleep bruxers (19 males and 44 females, mean±SD age=38.5±11.4years) were recruited among patients attending the Clinic for orofacial pain and dysfunction of the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). Zamaporvint The incisal/occlusal tooth wear was recorded for each tooth clinically, using a 5-point ordinal scale. Subsequently, all patients underwent an one-night ambulatory polysomnographic recording, during which the number of bruxism episodes per hour of sleep (Epi/h), the number of bruxism bursts per hour of sleep (Bur/h), and the bruxism time index (BTI) were recorded and analysed. Logistic regression analysis was performed using the presence of tooth wear as the dependent variable, the polysomnographic recordings as independent variables, and corrected for age and gender. The Bur/h and BTI were removed from the analyses due to collinearity with the Epi/h. Additionally, the polysomnographic recordings were also tested for possible association with self-reported grinding of the teeth during sleep.

No significant correlation was found between tooth wear and Epi/h (P=0.381). In addition, the presence of tooth wear was not associated with self-reported parafunctions.

Clinically measured tooth wear and self-reported parafunction seem not be related to the polysomnographic parameters of possible sleep bruxism.

A growing body of evidence suggests inflammatory markers can help predict poor outcomes in pregnancy. We evaluated C-reactive protein (CRP)-a key biomarker of inflammation-before and after a safe immune provocation (the seasonal influenza vaccine) during pregnancy. We evaluated predictors of the magnitude of response, as well as the association between CRP response and birth outcomes.

Nonrandomized prospective cohort trial measuring CRP before and 3 days after administering seasonal flu vaccine to low-risk obstetrical patients in Calgary, Alberta.

We analyzed 27 prevaccination/postvaccination samples. Body mass index (BMI) was positively associated with CRP at Day 0, and women with higher prepregnancy BMI had a less robust response to vaccination than did leaner women. There was a strong positive association between CRP response and infant birth weight; women who had the greatest response to vaccination (by tertile) gave birth to babies that weighed, on average, 256.2 g more than babies born to women with the lowest response.

Higher BMI in pregnant women was associated with higher baseline CRP and less pronounced CRP response to vaccination. Stronger CRP response was associated with higher birth weight. These findings underscore the potential value of a more dynamic approach to studying the regulation of inflammation during pregnancy and its implications for birth outcomes. This study was registered as a clinical trial in clinicaltrials.gov (ID REB15/1418).

To investigate the relationship between nurse managers' personality traits and conflict management strategies.

Despite the important role of personality traits in conflict management strategy preferences, no study to date has addressed the relationship between personality traits and conflict management in nurse managers.

A descriptive and cross-sectional design was applied. The study sample consisted of 114 nurse managers from six hospitals, and 111 participants completed forms for a total response rate of 97.36%.

The main findings revealed that the conflict management strategies used by nurse managers participating were as follows integrating (39.21, range=29-45), avoiding (38.39, range=23-65), compromising (31.51, range=24-40), dominating (20.05, range=12-28 ) and obliging (19.42, range=14-25). link2 It was seen that managers whose personality traits were extraverted, agreeable or conscientious chose the integration strategy to manage conflict, whereas managers with emotional inconsistency in personality traits preferred the avoiding strategy.

Nurse managers are important to effectively managing conflicts in the clinical environment. link2 Personality trait may be linked to the successful management of conflict.

Revealing the relationship between nurse managers' personality traits and associated conflict management strategies can help senior management organise useful training programmes to improve the conflict management capabilities.

The aim of this paper is to elucidate the effects of SY treatment on chronic social defeat stress (CSDS)-induced depression-like symptoms and the related mechanism. Our results indicated that SY treatment reverses the depressive-like behaviors induced by CSDS as measured by the social interaction test, sucrose preference test, forced swim test, and tail suspension test. SY decreased the serum levels of CORT and increased hippocampal neurotransmitters (5-HT, DA, and NE) in CSDS mice. link3 Meanwhile, SY upregulated the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling pathway and reversed the decreased hippocampal neurogenesis caused by CSDS. In addition, we found that the TrkB antagonist K252a fully blocked the SY effects on behavioral improvement and eliminated the promoting effects of SY on hippocampal neurogenesis and BDNF-TrkB signaling (including the downstream ERK and Akt pathways) activation, thus further demonstrating that BDNF-TrkB signaling was necessary for the SY effects. In conclusion, our study showed that SY acted as an antidepressant in mice exhibiting CSDS-induced depression-like symptoms, and its effect was facilitated by promoting hippocampal neurogenesis and BDNF signaling pathway activation.

Dentists who have graduated recently from a Dutch dental school work mainly in the Netherlands, where collaboration and differentiation are relevant factors. Furthermore, the Netherlands face regional undersupplies of dentists. The objective of this study was to describe choices and aims of recently graduated dentists for the near future.

An invitation for the web questionnaire was sent by e-mail to 945 dentists who had graduated from a Dutch dental school between 2013 and 2017, of whom 230 (24.3%) participated in the survey.

Approximately three quarters (77%) of the recently graduated dentists worked as a general dentist in a practice of some else, primarily in urban areas. The choice for a practice was affected by location, earnings, and the opportunity to gain experience. link3 Furthermore, the career choices were affected most by the desired length of the working week and financial security. The narrow majority (53%) of the recently graduated dentists believed that in 5years they will be practice owner; 49% expected to be a differentiated dentist. link3 Furthermore, 41% believed they will work in a smaller municipality.

Although recently graduated dentists seem receptive to work in smaller municipalities, the peripheral regions are conceivably less appealing. Practice ownership conceivably is an option for the near future for a narrow majority of the recently graduated dentists.

Recently graduated dentists have different preferences regarding their work situation in 5years.

In-hospital deaths are an important outcome and little is known about deaths in the emergency department (ED). Among patients who died of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), we assessed causes of death, temporal trends and the relative distribution of deaths in the ED versus hospital.

Using the United States Nationwide Emergency Department Sample, we conducted a retrospective study of patients presenting to the ED with a primary diagnosis of CVD between 2006 and 2014. We used descriptive statistics to describe causes of deaths, temporal trends and location of death.

During the study period, there were 27144508 visits to the ED with CVD diagnoses (~2% of all ED visits,). The most common CVD diagnoses were heart failure (n=8571598), acute myocardial infarction (n=4827518) and atrial fibrillation/flutter (n=4713241). There were a total of 2.2 million deaths caused by the CVD, with the majority (57.6%) occurring in the ED. Cardiac arrest was the most common cause of in-hospital death (n=1225095, 55.3%), followed by acute myocardial infarction (n=279310, 12.6%), heart failure (n=217367, 9.8%), intracranial hemorrhage (n=168009, 7.6%) and ischemic stroke (n=151615, 6.8%). The proportion of deaths in the ED for these causes were 91.9% cardiac arrest (n=1173471), 3.6% acute myocardial infarction (n=46909), 1.0% heart failure (n=12599) and 1.1% intracranial hemorrhage (n=13579). There was a decrease in death for most CVDs over time.

Inpatient CVD admissions and their associated death may not be a robust measure of the national burden of CVD since ED death-which are common for some conditions-are not captured.
