Moraceae consumption was associated with small home range sizes, even though more frugivorous primates tended to have larger home ranges compared to more folivorous species, possibly due to the year-round availability of moraceous fruits and the asynchrony in their phenology. Our results suggest that primates may be intricately and subtly shaped by the plant families that they have consumed over millions of years, and highlight the importance of detailed dietary studies to better understand primate ecology and evolution.Most animals undergo ecological niche shifts between distinct life phases, but such shifts can result in adaptive conflicts of phenotypic traits. Metamorphosis can reduce these conflicts by breaking up trait correlations, allowing each life phase to independently adapt to its ecological niche. This process is called adaptive decoupling. It is, however, yet unknown to what extent adaptive decoupling is realized on a macroevolutionary scale in hemimetabolous insects and if the degree of adaptive decoupling is correlated with the strength of ontogenetic niche shifts. It is also unclear whether the degree of adaptive decoupling is correlated with phenotypic disparity. Here, we quantify nymphal and adult trait correlations in 219 species across the whole phylogeny of earwigs and stoneflies to test whether juvenile and adult traits are decoupled from each other. We demonstrate that adult head morphology is largely driven by nymphal ecology, and that adult head shape disparity has increased with stronger ontogenetic niche shifts in some stonefly lineages. Our findings implicate that the hemimetabolan metamorphosis in earwigs and stoneflies does not allow for high degrees of adaptive decoupling, and that high phenotypic disparity can even be realized when the evolution of distinct life phases is coupled.Social structure is a fundamental aspect of animal populations. In order to understand the function and evolution of animal societies, it is important to quantify how individual attributes, such as age and sex, shape social relationships. Detecting these influences in wild populations under natural conditions can be challenging, especially when social interactions are difficult to observe and broad-scale measures of association are used as a proxy. In this study, we use unoccupied aerial systems to observe association, synchronous surfacing, and physical contact within a pod of southern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca). We show that interactions do not occur randomly between associated individuals, and that interaction types are not interchangeable. While age and sex did not detectably influence association network structure, both interaction networks showed significant social homophily by age and sex, and centrality within the contact network was higher among females and young individuals. These results suggest killer whales exhibit interesting parallels in social bond formation and social life histories with primates and other terrestrial social mammals, and demonstrate how important patterns can be missed when using associations as a proxy for interactions in animal social network studies.Domestication provides an outstanding opportunity for biologists to explore the underpinnings of organismal diversification. In domesticated animals, selective breeding for exaggerated traits is expected to override genetic correlations that normally modulate phenotypic variation in nature. Whether this strong directional selection affects the sequence of tightly synchronized events by which organisms arise (ontogeny) is often overlooked. To address this concern, we compared the ontogeny of the red junglefowl (RJF) (Gallus gallus) to four conspecific lineages that underwent selection for traits of economic or ornamental value to humans. Trait differentiation sequences in embryos of these chicken breeds generally resembled the representative ancestral condition in the RJF, thus revealing that early ontogeny remains highly canalized even during evolution under domestication. This key finding substantiates that the genetic cost of domestication does not necessarily compromise early ontogenetic steps that ensure the production of viable offspring. Instead, disproportionate beak and limb growth (allometry) towards the end of ontogeny better explained phenotypes linked to intense selection for industrial-scale production over the last 100 years. Illuminating the spatial and temporal specificity of development is foundational to the enhancement of chicken breeds, as well as to ongoing research on the origins of phenotypic variation in wild avian species.

The overall purpose of this study was to describe the impact of a tinzaparin weight-band dosing table for VTE prophylaxis on wound healing, thrombosis, and bleeding outcomes in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty.

This retrospective chart review included patients who underwent total hip or knee arthroplasty and received tinzaparin for thromboprophylaxis per their weight-banding category. While various studies have demonstrated the efficacy of NSCs from on-going culture, there is a significant gap in our understanding of freshly thawed cells from cryobanked stocks - a more clinically-relevant source. To address these shortfalls, the therapeutic potential of our previously validated Shef-6.0 human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived hNSC line was tested following long-term cryostorage and thawing prior to transplant. Immunodeficient athymic nude rats received a moderate unilateral controlled cortical impact (CCI) injury. At 4-weeks post-injury, 6x105 freshly thawed hNSCs were transplanted into six injection sites (2 ipsi- and 4 contra-lateral) with 53.4% of cells surviving three months post-transplant. Interestingly, most hNSCs were engrafted in the meninges and the lining of lateral ventricles, associated with high CXCR4 expression and a chemotactic response to SDF1alpha (CXCL12). While some expressed markers of neuron, astrocyte, and oligodendrocyte lineages, the majority remained progenitors, identified through doublecortin expression (78.1%). Importantly, transplantation resulted in improved spatial learning and memory in Morris water maze navigation and reduced risk taking in an elevated plus maze. Method We conducted an online survey of the adult Israeli population (N = 806), with 203 suicide-bereaved, 266 suicide-exposed, and 377 nonexposed respondents. Participants completed several questionnaires tapping depression and suicidality as well as perceived belongingness levels. Results Individuals bereaved by suicide reported the highest levels of depression, suicide ideation, and suicide attempts in comparison with suicide-exposed and nonexposed individuals. However, belongingness was found to moderate these distinctions concerning suicide ideation and suicide attempts. Limitations Belongingness was assessed by only a single question, and the online survey suffered from a relatively high nonresponse rate. Clinicians should accord adequate attention to fostering social connectedness among their clients bereaved by suicide.The prevalence of transmitted non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) resistance around the world has been estimated up to 2010. Treatment recommendations have since evolved from NNRTIs to integrase strand inhibitors (INSTIs). This analysis estimates more recent trends in transmitted NNRTI resistance given emerging INSTI use. Studies reporting prevalence of transmitted NNRTI resistance in Europe, the United States, and Canada were meta-analyzed to generate yearly estimates in four regions. Overall prevalence of transmitted resistance continued to rise in the United States to >10% in 2015. Prevalence in European countries with larger surveillance networks was consistent at ∼4% from 2000 through 2012, increasing to 7% in 2016. Prevalence in European countries with fewer available data was generally less then 5%. Two publications with Canadian data were identified, reporting 0%-3% resistance. This analysis showed increasing prevalence of transmitted NNRTI resistance up to 2016, despite the availability of newer classes of treatments.The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) represents a complex anatomic scenario for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) because of its unique technical challenges. As TAVR is moving towards younger and lower-risk populations, the proportion of BAV patients undergoing TAVR is expected to rise. Initial experiences of TAVR with first-generation transcatheter heart valves in high surgical risk patients with BAV stenosis showed higher rates of device failure and periprocedural complications as compared to tricuspid anatomy. The subsequent advances in imaging techniques and understanding of BAV anatomy, new iterations of transcatheter heart valves, and growing operators' experience yielded better outcomes. However, in the lack of randomized trials and rigorous evidence, the field of TAVR in BAV has been driven by empirical observations, with wide variability in transcatheter heart valve sizing and implantation techniques across different centers and operators. Thus, in this review article, we provide a fully illustrated overview of operative periprocedural steps for TAVR in BAV stenosis, though recognizing that it still remains anecdotal.
