If the damage to gel coat is extensive, begin by carefully washing it with dewaxing solvent to remove any mold release or wax surfactant that might interfere with adhesion of resin. Once that step has been completed, "scarf"ing will need to take place - typically done by sanding at an angle (12:1).

To repair a gouge or deeper scratch, chop filler and gel coat will be necessary. In addition, paper cups, stir sticks, acetone and rags may also be required. Chop filler is made up of powdered fiberglass which mixes easily with gel coat to form a putty-like substance; once mixed it should be applied directly over damaged areas by "mowing out" (increasing slightly above) surrounding gel coat surfaces.
