A simple system has been developed for Cα -Cβ bond cleavage of a β-O-4 ketone-structured lignin model compound (LMC) by H2 O2 in formic acid under metal catalyst-free conditions. By using this simple system, with H2 O2 , formic acid, and mineral acid catalyst, over 90 % product yield is achieved in 6 h at room temperature. The reaction proceeds through the classic Baeyer-Villiger oxidation and in situ-generated performic acid serves as the key oxidant. The cleavage of alcoholic LMCs by using the presented method in a two-step process is also demonstrated. © 2020 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Current pre-hospital clinical practice guidelines based on overseas studies recommend expedited transport to definitive trauma care and that i.v. fluid should only be administered to maintain palpable blood pressure. Y-27632 METHODS A retrospective review included all adult patients with penetrating truncal trauma and hypotension (systolic blood pressure less then 90 mmHg) attended by emergency medical services in Victoria between January 2006 and December 2018. Patient pre-hospital characteristics and hospital outcomes are described using descriptive statistics. Predictors of fluid resuscitation and mortality were examined using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Between 2006 and 2018 there were 101 hypotensive, penetrating truncal injury major trauma patients in Melbourne, Victoria transported by road ambulance to a major trauma service. The median age of these patients was 38 years (interquartile range [IQR] 27-50) and 85% were male. Median scene time was 16.6 min (IQR 12-26) and median pre-hospital time was 53.0 min (IQR 38-66). Intravenous fluid resuscitation was given in 54.5% of cases. The mechanism of injury was stabbing in 91.1% and gunshot wound in 8.9%. Urgent surgery was required in 72.3% of cases, 32.7% of patients were admitted to the intensive care unit and there were eight deaths (8.3%). CONCLUSION Penetrating truncal trauma with hypotension is rare in Melbourne, Australia with most patients having the injury caused by stabbing rather than shooting. Compared with outcomes reported in the USA and Europe, the mortality rate is low. © 2020 Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.INTRODUCTION Hepcidin is a key factor that regulates iron homeostasis. In hemodialysis patients (HD), a high hepcidin level may decrease intestinal iron absorption and reduce the efficacy of Oral iron vs Intravenous iron therapy. Whether the hepcidin level in HD could guide oral iron therapy is unclear. METHODS We report a monocentric study on nine "erythropoietin (EPO)-free" patients (without recombinant human EPO [rHU-EPO] for at least 6 months) and normal hepcidin level ( less then 20 ng mL) during the study. After 15 days of washout, oral iron (ferrous sulfate 80 mg/day) was introduced. The primary end point was the hemoglobin response and iron store at 3 months. FINDINGS Nine patients (8 men, 1 woman) with a median age of 62 years (range 42-79) were included. After 1 week of treatment, the median transferrin saturation index increased from 15% (range 6-61) to 34% (range 13-42), P = 0.62, reflecting intestinal absorption. The median ferritin level remained stable 80 μg/L (35-293) vs 82 μg/L (range 37-496) between M0 and M3, P = 0.43. During the 3-month study, median hemoglobin level increased from 11.5 d/dL (range10.4-13.7) to 12.8 g/dL (range 11.1-15.2), P = 0.01. No major side effects were observed. Quality of life assessed by the SF-36 criteria was similar during the 3-month study. DISCUSSION Oral iron therapy is effective and safe in EPO-free patients with normal hepcidin levels. These findings suggest that serum hepcidin may be a marker for defining iron therapy strategies in HD patients. HD patients treated with rHU-EPO and with normal hepcidin levels could benefit from oral iron treatment. © 2020 International Society for Hemodialysis.Continuous and low-energy desalination technologies are in high demand to enable sustainable water remediation. Our work introduces a continuous desalination process based on the redox reaction of the dual-zinc electrode. The system consists of two zinc foils as redox electrodes with flowing ZnCl 2 electrolyte, concentrated and diluted salt streams with three membranes separated configuration (AEM|CEM|AEM). When a constant current applied, the negative zinc electrode is oxidized with electrons released to the external circuit, while the positive zinc electrode is reduced, causing salt removal in the dilution stream. Y-27632 The testing results show that the brackish water can be directly desalted to 380.6 ppm during the continuous batch mode process. The energy consumption can be down to 35.30 kJ∙mol -1 at the current density of 0.25 mA∙cm -2 , and this consumption is comparable to RO. In addition, the dual-zinc electrode electrochemical desalination demonstrates the excellent rate performance, reversibility, and batch cyclability via electrode exchange regeneration. Our research provides a route for continuous low-energy desalination based on metal redox mediators. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In South America, S. sisymbriifolium is naturally controlled by the beetle Gratiana spadicea, making this a potential option for its control in Africa. Here, we aim to generate current and future scenarios for the introduction of G. spadicea as a biocontrol agent in Africa, analysing (i) current and future effective biocontrol areas; (ii) potentially avoided economic losses (AEL), and chemical control costs and savings; and (iii) avoided carbon emissions (ACE) associated with the non-burning of crop fields. We combine species distribution models (SDM) with land cover maps to estimate current and future effective biocontrol considering Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 climate change scenarios. We then estimate AEL and ACE using biocontrol, and chemical control costs and savings. RESULTS The effective biocontrol area reached 392 405 km2 in 18 countries, representing 40% of potentially affected croplands.
