In general, the serum metabolome reflects the patient's body response to both disease state and implemented treatment. Though serum-derived exosomes are an emerging type of liquid biopsy, the metabolite content of these vesicles remains under researched. The aim of this pilot study was to compare the metabolite profiles of the whole serum and serum-derived exosomes in the context of differences between cancer patients and healthy controls as well as patients' response to radiotherapy (RT).

Serum samples were collected from 10 healthy volunteers and 10 patients with head and neck cancer before and after RT. Metabolites extracted from serum and exosomes were analyzed by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

An untargeted GC-MS-based approach identified 182 and 46 metabolites in serum and exosomes, respectively. Metabolites that differentiated cancer and control samples, either serum or exosomes, were associated with energy metabolism. Serum metabolites affected by RT were associated with the metabolism of amino acids, sugars, lipids, and nucleotides.

We studied spatial and temporal behavioural responses of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) to a transient (open-air music festival) and a permanent (highly fragmented area) disturbance in the city of Berlin, Germany. Activity, foraging and movement patterns were observed in two distinct areas in 2016 and 2017 using a "Before & After" and "Control & Impact" study design. Confronted with a music festival, hedgehogs substantially changed their movement behaviour and nesting patterns and decreased the rhythmic synchronization (DFC) of their activity patterns with the environment. These findings suggest that a music festival is a substantial stressor influencing the trade-off between foraging and risk avoidance. Hedgehogs in a highly fragmented area used larger home ranges and moved faster than in low-fragmented and low-disturbed areas. They also showed behaviours and high DFCs similar to individuals in low-fragmented, low disturbed environment, suggesting that fragmentation posed a moderate challenge which they could accommodate. The acute but transient disturbance of a music festival, therefore, had more substantial and severe behavioural effects than the permanent disturbance through fragmentation. Our results are relevant for the welfare and conservation measure of urban wildlife and highlight the importance of allowing wildlife to avoid urban music festivals by facilitating avoidance behaviours.Newborn screening enables the diagnosis of treatable disorders at the early stages, and because of its countless benefits, conditions have been continuously added to screening panels, allowing early intervention, aiming for the prevention of irreversible manifestations and even premature death. Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are lysosomal storage disorders than can benefit from an early diagnosis, and thus are being recommended for newborn screening. They are multisystemic progressive disorders, with treatment options already available for several MPS types. MPS I was the first MPS disorder enrolled in the newborn screening (NBS) panel in the USA and a few other countries, and other MPS types are expected to be added. Very few studies about NBS for MPS in Latin America have been published so far. In this review, we report the results of pilot studies performed in Mexico and Brazil using different methodologies tandem mass spectrometry, molecular analysis, digital microfluidics, and fluorimetry. These experiences are important to report and discuss, as we expect to have several MPS types added to NBS panels shortly. This addition will enable timely diagnosis of MPS, avoiding the long diagnostic odyssey that is part of the current natural history of this group of diseases, and leading to a better outcome for the affected patients.The impact that humans have on zoo animals can vary based on the species of animal, exhibit design, and individual differences in behavioral responses. Of the 16 species studied, 90.9% of the mammal species and 60.0% of the fish species demonstrated a change in at least one behavior based on zoo visitor abundance or visitor behavior (e.g., noise, solicitation of interactions from zoo animals). In addition, behavioral changes associated with zoo visitors were present in animals housed in exhibits where there was direct contact with zoo visitors, as well as in exhibits where there was indirect contact and no direct contact. Individuals often varied in their behavioral responses, and some individuals appeared to seek out interactions with visitors. Our findings demonstrate that short-term research projects can provide valuable insight into individual animal-level and species-level responses to visitor abundance and visitor behavior in the zoo setting. We recommend that behavioral assessments focus on the analysis of behaviors of individual animals whenever possible, and we recommend that exhibits provide areas that allow for animals to retreat from the public view.Experiments were conducted for the study of the effect of cysteine addition on the microstructure of nanocrystalline Ni films electrodeposited from a nickel sulfate-based bath. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the nanostructure of Ni layers processed with cysteine addition was also investigated. It was found that with increasing cysteine content in the bath, the grain size decreased, while the dislocation density and the twin fault probability increased. Simultaneously, the hardness increased due to cysteine addition through various effects. Saturation in the microstructure and hardness was achieved at cysteine contents of 0.3-0.4 g/L. Moreover, the texture changed from (220) to (200) with increasing the concentration of cysteine. The hardness of the Ni films processed with the addition of 0.4 g/L cysteine (∼6800 MPa) was higher than the values obtained for other additives in the literature ( less then 6000 MPa). This hardness was further enhanced to ∼8400 MPa when the Ni film was heated up to 500 K. It was revealed that the hardness remained as high as 6000 MPa even after heating up to 750 K, while for other additives, the hardness decreased below 3000 MPa at the same temperature.Corticosteroids have potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Recently, these medications have gained importance in the treatment of severe COVID-19. Here we present data demonstrating a marked (10-fold) increase in frequency of candidemia in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 receiving corticosteroids in Brazil. Overall mortality was 72.7%, despite antifungal therapy. Physicians should be aware of the potential risk for candidemia among severely ill COVID-19 patients receiving high-doses of corticosteroids.Titanium dental implants are used routinely, with surgical procedure, to replace missing teeth. Even though they lead to satisfactory results, novel developments with implant materials can still improve implant treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of porous tantalum (Ta) dental implants for osseointegration, in comparison to classical titanium (Ti). Mesenchymal stem cells from the dental pulp (DPSC) were incubated on Ta, smooth titanium (STi), and rough titanium (RTi) to assess their adhesion, proliferation, osteodifferentiation, and mineralized matrix production. Cell proliferation was measured at 4 h, 24 h, 48 h with MTT test. Early osteogenic differentiation was followed after 4, 8, 12 days by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) quantification. Cells organization and matrix microstructure were studied with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Collagen production and matrix mineralization were evaluated by immunostaining and histological staining. MTT test showed significantly higher proliferation of DPSC on Ta at 24 h and 48 h. However, APL quantification after 8 and 12 days was significantly lower for Ta, revealing a delayed differentiation, where cells were proliferating the more. After 3 weeks, collagen immunostaining showed an efficient production of collagen on all samples. However, Red Alizarin staining clearly revealed a higher calcification on Ta. The overall results tend to demonstrate that DPSC differentiation is delayed on Ta surface, due to a longer proliferation period until cells cover the 3D porous Ta structure. However, after 3 weeks, a more abundant mineralized matrix is produced on and inside Ta implants. Cell populations on porous Ta proliferate greater and faster, leading to the production of more calcium phosphate deposits than cells on roughened and smooth titanium surfaces, revealing a potential enhanced capacity for osseointegration.

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a psychological intervention with established efficacy in the prevention and treatment of depressive disorders. Previous systematic reviews have not evaluated the effectiveness of IPT on symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, quality of life, relationship satisfaction/quality, social supports, and an improved psychological sense of wellbeing. There is limited information regarding moderating and mediating factors that impact the effectiveness of IPT such as the timing of the intervention or the mode of delivery of IPT intervention. The overall objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of IPT interventions to treat perinatal (from pregnancy up to 12 months postpartum) psychological distress.

Many unfavorable health outcomes among elderly people are associated with nutrition. Nutrition in elderly people is affected by physical, mental, and social factors. This study explored the food choices and dietary practices among community-dwelling elderly people in Thailand from the perspective of both caregivers and the elderly people themselves. Six focus group discussions and six semistructured interviews were conducted in the Samut Sakhon Province of Thailand. Deductive thematic analyses were conducted based on the "food choice process model framework." The results show that physical and mental factors and societal factors are important determinants of food choices. Moreover, a changing food environment and economic factors were found to affect food choices. Issues of trust in food safety and food markets were highlighted as growing issues. Therefore, fostering healthy food choice interventions that consider both environmental and societal aspects is necessary.
