Background To carry out a systematic review of scientific literature about the association between radon exposure and neurodegenerative diseases. Methods We performed a bibliographic search in the following databases Pub med (Medline), Cochrane, BioMed Central and Web of Science. We collected the data by following a predetermined search strategy in which several terms werecombined. After an initial search, 77 articles were obtained.10 of which fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Five of these 10 studies were related to multiple sclerosis (MS), 2 were about motor neuron diseases (MND), in particular amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 3 were related to both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Results The majority of the included articles, suggested a possible association between radon exposure and a subsequent development of neurodegenerative diseases. Some of the studies that obtained statistically significant resultsrevealed a possible association between radon exposure and an increase in MS prevalence. Furthermore, it was also suggested that radon exposure increases MND and AD mortality. Regarding AD and PD, it was observed that certainde cay products of radon-222 (222Rn), specifically polonium-210 (210Po) and bismuth-210 (210Bi), present a characteristic distributionpattern within the brain anatomy. However, the study with the highest scientific evidence included in this review, which investigated a possible association between the concentration of residential radon gas and the MS incidence, revealed no significant results. Conclusions It cannot be concluded, although it is observed, that there is a possible causal association between radon exposure and neurodegenerative diseases. Most of the available studies are ecological so, studies of higher statistical evidence are needed to establish a causal relationship. In this study, human pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity of aurone derivatives was explored by molecular modeling approaches. The target protein was human pancreatic lipase (PDB ID 1LPB). The 3D structures of 82 published bioactive aurone derivatives were docked successfully into the protein catalytic active site, using AutoDock Vina 1.5.7.rc1. Of them, 62 compounds interacted with the key residues of catalytic trial Ser152-Asp176-His263. The top hit compound (A14), with a docking score of -10.6 kcal⋅mol-1, was subsequently submitted to molecular dynamics simulations, using GROMACS 2018.01. Molecular dynamics simulation results showed that A14 formed a stable complex with 1LPB protein via hydrogen bonds with important residues in regulating enzyme activity (Ser152 and Phe77). D089 induced both dose- and time-dependent multiple myeloma cell death mediated by endoplasmic reticulum induced stress. Unexpectedly, we uncovered two mechanisms of cell death cellular senescence, as evidenced by increased levels of p16, p21 and γ-H2AX proteins and a caspase 3-independent mechanism consistent with pyroptosis. Cells treated with D089 exhibited high levels of the cleaved form of initiator caspase 8; but failed to show cleavage of executioner caspase 3, a classical apoptotic marker. Cotreatment with the a pan-caspase inhibitor Q-VD-OPh did not affect the cytotoxic effect of D089. In contrast, cleaved caspase 1, an inflammatory caspase downstream of caspases 8/9, was increased by D089 treatment. Cells treated with D089 in addition to either a caspase 1 inhibitor or siRNA-caspase 1 showed increased IC50 values, indicating a contribution of cleaved caspase 1 to cell death. Downstream effects of caspase 1 activation after drug treatment included increases in IL1B, gasdermin D cleavage, and HMGB1 translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. Drug treated cells underwent a 'ballooning' morphology characteristic of pyroptosis, rather than 'blebbing' typically associated with apoptosis. ASC specks colocalized with NLRP3 in proximity ligation assays after drug treatment, indicating inflammasome activation and further confirming pyroptosis as a contributor to cell death. Thus, the small molecule MYC G4 stabilizer, D089, provides a new tool compound for studying pyroptosis. These studies suggest that inducing both tumor senescence and pyroptosis may have therapeutic potential for cancer treatment.Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease characterized by demyelination, axonal loss, and synaptic impairment in the central nervous system (CNS). The available therapies aim to reduce the severity of the pathology during the early inflammatory stages, but they are not effective in the chronic stage of the disease. In this phase, failure in endogenous remyelination is associated with the impairment of oligodendrocytes progenitor cells (OPCs) to migrate and differentiate into mature myelinating oligodendrocytes. Therefore, stimulating differentiation of OPCs into myelinating oligodendrocytes has become one of the main goals of new therapeutic approaches for MS. Different disease-modifying therapies targeting sphingosine-1-phosphate receptors (S1PRs) have been approved or are being developed to treat MS. Besides their immunomodulatory effects, growing evidence suggests that targeting S1PRs modulates mechanisms beyond immunomodulation, such as remyelination. In this context, this review focuses on the current understanding of S1PR modulators and their direct effect on OPCs and oligodendrocytes.Subsurface characterization is essential for a successful infrastructure design and construction. This paper demonstrates the use of an instrumented cone penetrometer (ICP) for a dense layer characterization at two sites. The ICP consists of a cone tip and rods equipped with an accelerometer and four strain gauges, which allow dynamic driving, in addition to quasi-static pushing of the cone. The force and velocity of the cone are measured using the ICP instrumentation and compared with the N value, dynamic cone penetration index, and static cone resistance. A strong correlation has been observed between the total cone resistance estimated from the ICP and the dynamic cone penetration index and static cone resistance. After the correction of the dynamic cone resistance effect, the static component of the total cone resistance can be used as an alternative to a static cone resistance. This novel approach of soil resistance estimation using the ICP may be useful for dense layer characterization.

Most patients with cerebral palsy (CP) do not respond to physical therapy due to deterioration in their nutritional status, secondary to gastrointestinal disorders and the catabolic state of the disease itself. However, basic treatments only contemplate the energy requirements and do not consider supplementation with glutamine, zinc, selenium, colecalciferol, spirulina, omega 3 or even vegetal proteins.

In this study, we determined the effect of using a nutritional support system (NSS) diet and supplements, on the gross motor function in children with CP with spastic diparesic and Gross Motor Function Classification System III (GMFCS III).

An exploratory study was performed. Thirty patients (from 4 to 12 years old) were randomly assigned to (1) dietary surveillance (FG), (2) deworming and WHO diet (CG), or (3) deworming and the NSS (IG). Gross motor function was evaluated using the gross motor function measure (GMFM) scale.

The aim of this study was to systematically assess the current evidence in the literature and to evaluate the impact of nonpharmacological interventions on improving pregnancy-related outcomes in overweight or obese infertile women. Seven databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of nonpharmacological interventions for infertile women with overweight or obesity through August 16, 2019 with no language restriction. A meta-analysis was conducted of the primary outcomes. A total of 21 RCTs were selected and systematically reviewed. Compared to the control group, nonpharmacological interventions significantly increased the pregnancy rate (relative risk (RR), 1.37; 95% CI, 1.04-1.81; p = 0.03; I² = 58%; nine RCTs) and the natural conception rate (RR, 2.17, 95% CI, 1.41-3.34; p = 0.0004; I² = 19%, five RCTs). However, they had no significant effect on the live birth rate (RR, 1.36, 95% CI, 0.94-1.95; p=0.10, I² = 65%, eight RCTs) and increased the risk of miscarriage (RR 1.57, 95% CI, 1.05-2.36; p = 0.03; I² = 0%). Therefore, nonpharmacological interventions could have a positive effect on the pregnancy and natural conception rates, whereas it is unclear whether they improve the live birth rate. Further research is needed to demonstrate the integrated effects of nonpharmacological interventions involving psychological outcomes, as well as pregnancy-related outcomes.Noise-induced hearing loss is one of the major causes of acquired sensorineural hearing loss in modern society. While people with excessive exposure to noise are frequently the population with a lifestyle of irregular circadian rhythms, the effects of circadian dysregulation on the auditory system are still little known. link2 Here, we disturbed the circadian clock in the cochlea of male CBA/CaJ mice by constant light (LL) or constant dark. link3 LL significantly repressed circadian rhythmicity of circadian clock genes Per1, Per2, Rev-erbα, Bmal1, and Clock in the cochlea, whereas the auditory brainstem response thresholds were unaffected. After exposure to low-intensity (92 dB) noise, mice under LL condition initially showed similar temporary threshold shifts to mice under normal light-dark cycle, and mice under both conditions returned to normal thresholds after 3 weeks. However, LL augmented high-intensity (106 dB) noise-induced permanent threshold shifts, particularly at 32 kHz. The loss of outer hair cells (OHCs) and the reduction of synaptic ribbons were also higher in mice under LL after noise exposure.
