This paper presents the effect of the micro-sized particles on the storage modulus and durability characteristics of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). The initial phase of the investigation is to determine any associations among the microparticles' weight percent fraction (wt%), structure arrangement, and the storage modulus of MRE samples. In order to carry out this, both isotropic and anisotropic types of MRE samples consisting of the silicone rubber matrix and 50, 60, 70, 75, and 80 wt% microparticles of carbonyl iron fractions are prepared. It is identified from the magneto-rheometer that the increase in storage modulus and decrease in linear viscoelastic region limit are observed in varying consistency depending on wt% and particle arrangement. The consistency of this dependency feature is highlighted by superimposing all of the graphs plotted to create the proposed the samples' behavior model. In response to increasing magnetic stimulation, a sample of 70 wt% microparticles with an isotropic arrangement is found to be significant and stable. The experimentally defined fraction is then used for the durability test as the second phase of the investigation. During this phase, the durability evaluation is subjected to stress relaxation for an extended period of time. After undergoing durability testing, storage modulus performance is decreased by 0.7-13% at various magnetic stimulation levels. This result directly indicates that the storage modulus characteristics of different forms of MRE are sensitive to the different iron particle fractions' and microparticles' alignment. Therefore, important treatments to alter the storage modulus can be undertaken before the practical implementation to accommodate any desired performance of MRE itself and MRE application systems.Recently published studies have shown that microfluidic devices fabricated by in-house three-dimensional (3D) printing, computer numerical control (CNC) milling and laser engraving have a good quality of performance. The 3-in-1 3D printers, desktop machines that integrate the three primary functions in a single user-friendly set-up are now available for computer-controlled adaptable surface processing, for less than USD 1000. Here, we demonstrate that 3-in-1 3D printer-based micromachining is an effective strategy for creating microfluidic devices and an easier and more economical alternative to, for instance, conventional photolithography. Our aim was to produce plastic microfluidic chips with engraved microchannel structures or micro-structured plastic molds for casting polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chips with microchannel imprints. The reproducability and accuracy of fabrication of microfluidic chips with straight, crossed line and Y-shaped microchannel designs were assessed and their microfluidic performance checked by liquid stream tests. All three fabrication methods of the 3-in-1 3D printer produced functional microchannel devices with adequate solution flow. Accordingly, 3-in-1 3D printers are recommended as cheap, accessible and user-friendly tools that can be operated with minimal training and little starting knowledge to successfully fabricate basic microfluidic devices that are suitable for educational work or rapid prototyping.Wafer bonding technology is one of the most effective methods for high-quality thin-film transfer onto different substrates combined with ion implantation processes, laser irradiation, and the removal of the sacrificial layers. In this review, we systematically summarize and introduce applications of the thin films obtained by wafer bonding technology in the fields of electronics, optical devices, on-chip integrated mid-infrared sensors, and wearable sensors. The fabrication of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers based on the Smart CutTM process, heterogeneous integrations of wide-bandgap semiconductors, infrared materials, and electro-optical crystals via wafer bonding technology for thin-film transfer are orderly presented. Furthermore, device design and fabrication progress based on the platforms mentioned above is highlighted in this work. They demonstrate that the transferred films can satisfy high-performance power electronics, molecular sensors, and high-speed modulators for the next generation applications beyond 5G. Moreover, flexible composite structures prepared by the wafer bonding and de-bonding methods towards wearable electronics are reported. Finally, the outlooks and conclusions about the further development of heterogeneous structures that need to be achieved by the wafer bonding technology are discussed.Micro-textured tools were fabricated by making textures on rake faces and filling them with molybdenum disulfide. Dry milling of Ti-6Al-4V alloys was carried out with the micro-textured tools and conventional tools for comparison. Results showed that micro-textured tools can reduce the resultant cutting forces, cutting temperatures, and power consumption by approximately 15%, 10%, and 5%, respectively. Meanwhile, the developed tools can improve tool lives by approximately 20-25%. The radial width of cut, the cutting speed, and the axial depth of cut all had statistical and physical effects on the energy consumption per unit of volume in dry milling of Ti-6Al-4V alloys, while the feed per tooth seemed to have no significant effect. The mechanism for improved performance of micro-textured tools can be mainly interpreted as their self-lubricating function.Neutrophil dysfunction is closely related to the pathophysiology of patients with diabetes mellitus, but existing immunoassays are difficult to implement in clinical applications, and neutrophil's chemotaxis as a functional biomarker for diabetes mellitus prognostic remains largely unexplored. Herein, a novel microfluidic device consisted of four independent test units with four cell docking structures was developed to study the neutrophil chemotaxis, which allowed multiple cell migration observations under a single field of view (FOV) and guaranteed more reliable results. In vitro studies, the chemotaxis of healthy neutrophils to N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (fMLP) gradient (0, 10, 100, and 1000 nM) was concentration-dependent. SB203580 price The distinct promotion or suppression in the chemotaxis of metformin or pravastatin pretreated cells were observed after exposure to 100 nM fMLP gradient, indicating the feasibility and efficiency of this novel microfluidic device for clinically relevant evaluation of neutrophil functional phentrations of glucose and AGEs on the neutrophil chemotaxis, suggesting that patients with diabetes should manage serum AGEs and also pay attention to blood glucose indexes. Overall, this novel microfluidic device could significantly characterize the chemotaxis of neutrophils and have the potential to be further improved into a tool for risk stratification of diabetes mellitus.Because electronics are becoming flexible, the demand for techniques to manufacture thin flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) has increased. Conventional FPCBs are fabricated by attaching a coverlay film (41 μm) onto copper patterns/polyimide (PI) film to produce the structure of coverlay/Cu patterns/PI film. Given that the conventional coverlay consists of two layers of polyimide film and adhesive, its thickness must be reduced to generate thinner FPCBs. In this study, we fabricated 25-μm-thick poly(amide-imide-urethane)/epoxy interpenetrating networks (IPNs) to replace the thick conventional coverlay. Poly(amide-imide-urethane) (PAIU) was synthesized by reacting isocyanate-capped polyurethane with trimellitic anhydride and then mixed with epoxy resin to produce PAIU/epoxy IPNs after curing. Thanks to the soft segments of polyurethane, the elongation of PAIU/epoxy IPNs increased with increasing PAIU content and reached over 200%. After confirming the excellent thermal stability and chemical resistance of the PAIU/epoxy IPNs, we fabricated FPCBs by equipping them as coverlays. The mechanical durability of the FPCBs was evaluated through an MIT folding test, and the FPCB fabricated with PAIU/ep-2 was stable up to 164 folding cycles because of the balanced mechanical properties. We discuss distributed chemical sensing based on the swelling of coatings of optical fibers. Volume changes in the coating induce strain in the fiber's glass core, provoking a local change in the refractive index which is detectable by distributed fiber optical sensing techniques. We describe methods to realize different coatings on a single fiber. Simultaneous detection of swelling processes all along the fiber opens the possibility to interrogate thousands of differently functionalized sections on a single fiber. Principal component analysis is used to enable sensors for environmental monitoring, food analysis, agriculture, water quality monitoring, or medical diagnostics.Piezoelectric actuators are widely used in micromanipulation and miniature robots due to their rapid response and high repeatability. The piezoelectric actuators often have undesired hysteresis. The Prandtl-Ishlinskii (PI) hysteresis model is one of the most popular models for modeling and compensating the hysteresis behaviour. This paper presents an alternative digitized representation of the modified Prandtl-Ishlinskii with the dead-zone operators (MPI) hysteresis model to describe the asymmetric hysteresis behavior of piezoelectric actuators. Using a binary number with n digits to represent the classical Prandtl-Ishlinskii hysteresis model with n elementary operators, the inverse model can be easily constructed. A similar representation of the dead-zone operators is also described. With the proposed digitized representation, the model is more intuitive and the inversion calculation is avoided. An experiment with a piezoelectric stacked linear actuator is conducted to validate the proposed digitized MPI hysteresis model and it is shown that it has almost the same performance as compared to the classical representation. The work presents an efficient and non-invasive method to visualize the local concentration and viscosity distribution of two miscible and non-reacting substances with a significant viscosity difference in a microchannel with a Y-shape cell. The proof-of-concept setup consists of a near-infrared (NIR) camera and cost-effective dome lighting with NIR light-emitting diodes (LED) covering the wavelength range of 1050 to 1650 nm. Absorption differences of glycerol and water and their mixtures with a mass fraction of glycerol from 0 to 0.95 gGlycgtotal-1 were analyzed in the NIR spectral area. The resulting measurement images were converted in a concentration profile by using absorbance calculated with Lambert-Beer law. link2 A linear behavior between the concentration and the absorption coefficient is demonstrated. link3 The result of local concentration in mass fraction was used to determine the local viscosity and illustrated as distribution images. By variating the fluid parameters, the influences of the highly different original viscosities in the mixing procedure were investigated and visualized. The bionic cilium MEMS vector hydrophone has the characteristics of low power consumption, small volume, and good low-frequency response. Nevertheless, there exists the problem of left-right ambiguity in the azimuth estimation of a single hydrophone. In order to solve the engineering application problem, a sound-pressure sound-pressure-gradient hydrophone is designed in this paper. The new composite hydrophone consists of two channels. The bionic cilium microstructure is optimized and used as the vector channel, to collect the sound pressure gradient information, and a scalar channel, based on a piezoelectric ceramic tube, is added, to receive the sound pressure information. The theoretical analysis, simulation analysis, and test analysis of the composite hydrophone are carried out, respectively. The test results show that the sensitivities of the hydrophone can reach up to -188 dB (vector channel) and -204 dB (scalar channel). The problem of left-right ambiguity is solved by combining the sound pressure and sound pressure gradient in different ways.
