This review aims to provide an up to date overview of both historical and current systems of IVDD classification, highlighting the important findings and controversies underpinning them.The study assessed the prevalence of animal-based pig welfare outcomes on one Chilean farm and one abattoir. A total of 198 pens of slaughter pigs (9,049 pigs) were observed on farm and 54 batches (8,843 pigs) were observed at the abattoir. All assessments were conducted from outside the pen on farm and from outside the corridor where pigs were unloaded from the truck at the abattoir. Batch size and number of pigs with ear, tail and skin lesions, hernias, rectal prolapse, bursitis, and lameness were recorded. Data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models. There was a large variation among pens on farm and among batches at the abattoir for all outcomes. Bursitis was the most prevalent outcome recorded in both locations, followed by ear lesions recorded on farm and by tail lesions recorded at the abattoir. Ear lesions' prevalence was higher on farm (P less then 0.001), while tail lesions, hernia, and bursitis prevalence were higher at the abattoir (P less then 0.001). Ear lesions' prevalence on farm was higher in female and mixed-sex groups than in male groups (P less then 0.01), but male groups tended to have a higher tail lesions' prevalence (P less then 0.1). The results show a difference in welfare outcomes, suggesting that assessment of outcomes on farm could complement ante-mortem inspections at the abattoir. However, as the same animals were not inspected in the two locations and there is the possibility of a seasonal influence on the results, the findings should be interpreted with caution and further research is required.Liver abscessation is an important metabolic disorder that commonly afflicts cattle consuming cereal-based, high-concentrate diets. Economic ramifications of liver abscessation are substantial, and include liver condemnation, decreased body weight gain, poorer efficiency of feed utilization, reduced carcass yield, and impairments in operational efficiency of commercial abattoirs. The etiological agent most commonly associated with liver abscesses is Fusobacterium necrophorum, which is an anaerobic, Gram-negative, nonmotile, nonsporulating, and rod-shaped (pleomorphic) bacterium. Fusobacterium necrophorum is one of the major proteolytic species of bacteria in the rumen, and it is believed to have a major role in degradation of dietary lysine. Crossbred steer calves (N = 2,380) were enrolled based on a clinical illness score (CIS) of 1-3; a rectal temperature between >102.5° F and ≤103.9° F; and a Whisper Score (WS) = 1 or ≥2. Within each WS stratum, steers were randomly allocated to Saline, TIL, FTS, or TIL + FTS to reflect a 2 × 2 factorial design. Individual health and performance outcomes were measured on Day 60 and closeout. From Day 0 through Day 60, in both strata, TIL resulted in significantly (P ≤ 0.05) fewer BRD retreatment events, fewer 3rd BRD treatments, fewer steers that did not finish, and greater average daily gain when compared to steers that were not treated with TIL. From Day 0 through closeout, cattle with a WS ≥ 2, treated with TIL had fewer animals (P ≤ 0.05) that did not finish compared to steers not treated with TIL. In this study, the coding sequences of galectin-2 were identified from Cherry Valley ducks. Tissue distribution of duck galectin-2 (duGal-2) in healthy ducks and ducks infected with avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) was studied, respectively. The results showed that duGal-2 expression was higher in the gut, kidney, and liver tissue, and weakly expressed in the lung and brain, in healthy ducks; however, the expression level of duGal-2 was detected as being up-regulated after infection with APEC. In addition, knockdown or overexpression of duGal-2 in DEFs was achieved by small interference RNA (siRNA) transfection and plasmid transduction, respectively. The knockdown of duGal-2 led to a decrease in the expression of some inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8, while the expression levels of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 were up-regulated.
