Photocatalysis of dye degradation is one of green and cheap technologies for solving environmental pollution. Whereas it is rarely concerned that the degradation process varied with the change of solution condition, this work studied the influence of hydrion in the solution on the photodegradation process of Rhodamine B (RhB) over g-C3N4. The photocatalytic activity of RhB degradation was enhanced gradually with increased hydrion content in the system. The efficiency for RhB degradation over g-C3N4 in weak acidic system with interference of multiple metal-ions still reached near 95% after 30 min of natural sunlight irradiation. A large amount of oxidation species and the hydroxylation mineralization process were induced by increasing the hydrion concentration. Two degradation processes for deethylation of four ethyl groups and the direct chromophoric degradation were discovered and proved by multifarious intermediates in different systems using the ESR technique, LC/MS and GC/MS analysis. In addition, the photosensitization played a critical role in the RhB degradation. A feasible degradation mechanism was proposed for the RhB degradation based on the experimental results.FRET has been massively used to see if biomolecules were bounded or not by labelling both biomolecules by one dye of a FRET pair. This should give a digital answer to the question (fluorescence of the acceptor high FRET efficency molecules associated, fluorescence of the donor low FRET efficency molecules dissociated). This has been used, inter alia, at the single-molecule scale in containers, such as liposomes. One perspective of the field is to reduce the container's size to study the effect of confinement on binding. The problem is that if the two dyes are encapsulated inside a small liposome, they could have a significant probability to be close one from the other one (and thus to undergo a high FRET efficiency event without binding). This is why we suggest here a theoretical model which gives mean FRET efficiency as a function of liposome radius (the model applies to any spherical container) and Förster radius to help the experimentalist to choose their experimental set-up. Besides, the influence of side effect on mean FRET efficiency has been studied as well. We show here that if this "background FRET" is most of the time non-quantitative, it can remain significant and which makes data analysis trickier. We could show as well that if this background FRET obviously increases when liposome radius decreases, this variation was lower than the one which could be expected because of side effect. We show as well the FRET efficiency function distribution which let the experimentalist know the probability to get one FRET efficiency value. There is no effective treatment to halt peripheral nervous system damage in diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Mitochondria have been at the center of discussions as important factors in the development of neuropathy in diabetes. Photobiomodulation has been gaining clinical acceptance as it shows beneficial effects on a variety of nervous system disorders. In this study, the effects of photobiomodulation (904 nm, 45 mW, 6.23 J/cm2, 0.13 cm2, 60 ns pulsed time) on mitochondrial dynamics were evaluated in an adult male rat experimental model of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes. Results presented here indicate that photobiomodulation could have an important role in preventing or reversing mitochondrial dynamics dysfunction in the course of peripheral nervous system damage in diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Photobiomodulation showed its effects on modulating the protein expression of mitofusin 2 and dynamin-related protein 1 in the sciatic nerve and in the dorsal root ganglia neurons of streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes in rats.Sunscreens have now been around for decades to mitigate the Sun's damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation which, although essential for the existence of life, is a recognized prime carcinogen. Accordingly, have suncreams achieved their intended purposes towards protection against sunburns, skin photo-ageing and the like? Most importantly, however, have they provided the expected protection against skin cancers that current sunscreen products claim to do? In the last two decades, there have been tens, if not hundreds of studies on sunscreens with respect to skin protection against UVB (280‒320 nm)-traditionally sunscreens with rather low sun protection factors (SPF) were intended to protect against this type of radiation-and UVA (320‒400 nm) radiation; a distinction between SPF and UVA protection factor (UVA-PF) is made. Many of the studies of the last two decades have focused on protection against the more skin-penetrating UVA radiation. This non-exhaustive article reviews some of the important facets of what is currently known about sunscreens with regard (i) to the physical UV filters titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) and the mostly photo-unstable chemical UVB/UVA filters (e.g., octinoxate (OMC) and avobenzone (AVO), among others), (ii) to novel chemical sunscreen agents, (iii) to means that minimize the breakdown of chemical filters and improve their stability when exposed to UV sunlight, (iv) to SPF factors, and (v) to a short discussion on non-melanoma skin cancers and melanoma. Importantly, throughout the article we allude to the safety aspects of sunscreens and at the end ask the question do active ingredients in sunscreen products pose a risk to human health, and what else can be done to enhance protection? Significant loss of skin protection from two well-known commercial suncreams when exposed to simulated UV sunlight. Cream I titanium dioxide, ethylhexyl triazone, avobenzone, and octinoxate; Cream II octyl salicylate, oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octinoxate. In prospective observational cohort studies, increasing sun exposure habits have been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality. Our aim was to assess possible observational mechanisms for this phenomenon. A written questionnaire was answered by 23,593 women in the year 2000 regarding risk factors for melanoma, including factors of possible interest for hypertension, such as detailed sun exposure habits, hypertension, marital status, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, BMI, exercise, and chronic high stress. Hypertension was measured by the proxy "use of hypertension medication" 2005-2007, and high stress by "need of anti-depressive medication". Sun exposure habits was assessed by the number of `yes' to the following questions; Do you sunbath during summer?, During winter vacation?, Do you travel south to sunbath?, Or do you use sun bed? Women answering 'yes' on one or two questions had moderate and those answering 'yes' on three or four as having greatest sun exposure. see more The main outcome was the risk of hypertension by sun exposure habits adjusted for confounding. As compared to those women with the greatest sun exposure, women with low and moderate sun exposure were at 41% and 15% higher odds of hypertension (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.3‒1.6, p  less then  0.001 and OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.1‒1.2, p  less then  0.001), respectively. There was a strong age-related increased risk of hypertension. Other risk factors for hypertension were lack of exercise (OR 1.36), a non-fair phenotype (OR 1.08), chronic high stress level (OR 1.8), and lack of university education (OR 1.3). We conclude that in our observational design sun exposure was associated with a dose-dependent reduced risk of hypertension, which might partly explain the fewer deaths of cardiovascular disease with increasing sun exposure.

Afamelanotide (AFA) is a synthetic analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that is approved for the treatment of patients affected by erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). AFA induces a "sun free" tanning and changes of acquired melanocytic nevi (AMN) that are generically described as "darkening".

To assess clinical and dermoscopic AMN changes during AFA treatment.

Adult EPP patients treated with two AFA implants 50days apart were enrolled. They underwent a clinical and dermoscopic examination of all AMN at baseline (T0), and after 5 (T1) and 12 (T2) months from the first AFA implant. The general pattern, symmetry, number, and size of pigmented globules, morphology of the pigment network, and dermoscopic melanoma features were assessed.

Fifteen patients were enrolled with 103 AMN. At T1 all reticular and 2-component AMN showed a focal network thickening that returned to baseline by T2. The increase of globules' number was observed at T1 but not at T2. The difference in number was not influenced by patients' age or phototype. Dermoscopic changes suggestive of malignancy were never seen. The development of new AMN was never registered.

AFA treatment induces reversible changes of AMN dermoscopic morphology without findings suggestive of malignant transformation and it does not stimulate the development of new AMN.

It is demonstrated that the photoreduction of the coordinated Fe(III) to Fe(II) and oxidative decarboxylation occurs in a variety of uronate-containing polysaccharides. The photochemistry of the Fe(III)-polyuronic acid system generated a radical species during the reaction which was studied using the spin trapping technique. The identity of the radical species from this reaction was confirmed as CO2•- indicating that both bond cleavage of the carboxylate and oxidative decarboxylation after ligand to metal charge transfer radical reactions may be taking place upon irradiation. Degradation of the polyuronic acid chain was investigated with dynamic light scattering, showing a decrease in the hydrodynamic radius of the polymer assemblies in solution after light irradiation that correlates with the Fe(II) generation. A decrease in viscosity of Fe(IIII)-alginate after light irradiation was also observed. Additionally, the photochemical reaction was investigated in plant root tissue (parsnip) demonstrating that Fe(III) coordination in these natural materials leads to photoreactivity that degrades the pectin component. These results highlight that this Fe(III)-polyuronic acid can occur in many natural systems and may play a role in biogeochemical cycling of iron and ferrous iron generation in plants with significant polyuronic acid content.Charge recombination kinetics of bacterial photosynthetic protein Reaction Center displays an exquisite sensitivity to the actual occupancy of ubiquinone-10 in its QB-binding site. Here, we have exploited such phenomenon for assessing the growth and the aggregation/fusion of phosphocholine vesicles embedding RC in their membrane, when treated with sodium oleate.

Photo-thermal therapy (PTT) has been at the center of attention as a new method for cancer treatment in recent years. It is important to predict the response to treatment in the PTT procedure. Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) can be considered a novel technique in evaluating changes in metabolites resulted from PTT.

In the present project, we conducted an in vivo study to assess the efficacy of

H-MRS as a noninvasive technique to evaluate the response to treatment in the early hours following PTT. The BALB/c mice subcutaneously bearing tumor cells (CT26 cell line) were scanned by

H-MRS before and after PTT. Iron oxide-gold core-shell (Fe

O

@Au) as PTT agent was injected into intra-peritoneal at first and then irradiated by NIR laser. Single-voxel Point RESolved Spectroscopy (PRESS) sequence (TE = 144) was used, and metabolites alternations were evaluated by the non-parametric Wilcoxon test. Besides, Nanoparticle (NP) relaxometry was conducted for negative contrast agents' potentials.

MRS choline (Cho) peak dramatically reduced 24h post-PTT (p = 0.
