On the whole, the importance of the user's perspective was highlighted in this study with emphasis on elaborating adequate urban planning with regard to health, sanitation, and accessibility issues. The coastal area of the southern Lake Baikal with the population over 35,000 people remains an attractive spot for both tourists and local residents. Despite high anthropogenic impact, a detailed assessment of water quality in this area has not been performed so far. Here, we performed a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of the surface, bottom and interstitial water in rivers, lacustrine water and wastewater in the southern Lake Baikal region. We analyzed 37 samples for the presence of fecal enterococci, Escherichia coli and assessed their hydrochemical parameters concentrations of nutrients (nitrate-N, nitrite-N, ammonium-N and phosphate-P), dissolved oxygen and amount of ions (HCO3- + SO42- + Cl- + Ca2+ + Mg2+ + Na+ + K+). In addition, the temperature, pH and electrical conductivity were also measured. We found that multiple areas around South Baikal suffer from microbiological and hydrochemical pollution. We conclude that ecological situation in this area requires immediate attention from local authorities, more efficient wastewater management systems should be constructed in the settlements. We also conclude that interstitial waters from the lake's splash zone represent an effective and sensitive indicator of sanitary-microbiological and hydrochemical pollution and their analysis can be included in the standard protocol of water quality assessment for all types of water bodies.Provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in health care facilities is a priority at the global, national, and local levels. To inform improvements planning, conditions of WASH, waste management, and environmental cleaning were assessed in 81 facilities in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia, as part of a nationally representative survey in 2019. The survey included on-site checks, structured interviews, and drinking-water quality analysis. WHO/UNICEF indicators for WASH service levels and an advanced service level defined at the national level were applied. The results showed that all investigated facilities provided basic water services; 94% of facilities provided basic hygiene and waste management services; 58 and 2%, respectively, provided basic cleaning and sanitation services. Only 1% of investigated facilities met the basic level for all five WASH dimensions. Advanced service levels were only met for hygiene, waste management, and/or cleaning in 15-38% of facilities. In 33% of health care facilities, drinking-water quality was not in compliance with the national standards. The results revealed that there is a need for increased awareness and efforts to ensure basic provisions for sanitation, environmental cleaning, and drinking-water safety.Over 1 million people in New Jersey (NJ) are estimated to receive drinking water from private wells. The most commonly detected contaminants in NJ private well water are naturally occurring arsenic and gross alpha (8.3 and 10.9%, respectively). Between 2015 and 2018, three free and voluntary private well testing events tested a total of 571 at-risk wells and 226 (40%) were identified as having one or more contaminants exceeding drinking water standards. Participants were invited to complete a survey to evaluate household characteristics, participant experience, and private well stewardship behavior patterns. Of 529 delivered surveys, 211 (40%) participants completed surveys. Among respondents, 63% reported plans to test their private wells in the future. CL-82198 solubility dmso Among failed wells, 45% of households reported performing mitigative action in response to the event, either through the installation of water treatment system or switching to bottled water. The survey evaluation identified previous knowledge of well contamination risks and discussing test results with a third party as important factors for promoting self-reported stewardship behavior. The evaluation provides guidance for outreach organizers to develop effective testing events and further considers the private well owners' experience of the outreach events to identify information for 'best practices' and improvements of future programs.Carbon sources of cellulose plants are promising materials that enhance the activities of denitrifying bacteria in the groundwater system. To further verify the denitrification performance of cellulose plants and the main factors of affecting the denitrifying system, six cellulose plants from agricultural wastes (wood chip, corn cob, rice husk, corn straw, wheat straw, and sugar cane) were selected for bioavailable organic matter leaching experiments, carbon denitrification experiments, functional bacteria identification, and analysis experiments. The results show that the extracts of cellulose plants contain a mixed carbon sources system including small molecular organic acids, sugars, nitrogen-containing organic components, and esters. The qPCR results showed that the denitrifying bacteria had obvious advantages compared to anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria during the stable period; the denitrification experiment showed that each of six cellulose plants removed more than 80% of nitrogen, and the denitrification rates reached 1.00-2.00 mg N cm-3·d-1. The supplement of cellulose plants promotes the metabolism rate of denitrifying bacteria, and the additional denitrifying bacteria have little effect on nitrate removal. In summary, the expected denitrification reaction occurred in the cellulose plant system, which is suitable as a carbon source material for water body nitrogen pollution remediation. The three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum has a significantly greater amount of information than the single-stage scanning fluorescence spectrum. At the same time, the parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis and neural network method can help explore the fluorescence characteristics further, thus could be used to analyse multiple sets of three-dimensional matrix data. In this study, the PARAFAC analysis and the self-organizing mapping (SOM) neural network method are firstly introduced comprehensively. They are then adopted to extract information of the three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum data set for fluorescence characteristics analysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Taihu Lake water. Forty water samples with DOM species were taken from different seasons with the fluorescence information obtained through three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum analysis, PARAFAC analysis and SOM analysis. The PARAFAC analysis results indicated that the main fluorescence components of dissolved organic matter in Taihu Lake water were aromatic proteins, fulvic acids, and dissolved microorganisms. The SOM analysis results showed that the fluorescence characteristics of the dissolved organics in Taihu Lake varied seasonally. Therefore, the combined method of three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum analysis, PARAFAC and SOM analysis can provide important information for characterization of the fluorescence properties of dissolved organic matter in surface water bodies. This study summarizes the results of scientific investigations on the removal of the three most often used β-blockers (atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol) by various advanced oxidation processes (AOP). The free radical chemistry, rate constants, degradation mechanism and elimination effectiveness of these compounds are discussed together with the technical details of experiments. In most AOP the degradation is predominantly initiated by hydroxyl radicals. In sulfate radical anion-based oxidation processes (SROP) both hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radical anions greatly contribute to the degradation. The rate constants of reactions with these two radicals are in the 109-1010 M-1 s-1 range. The degradation products reflect ipso attack, hydroxylation on the aromatic ring and/or the amino moiety and cleavage of the side chain. Among AOP, photocatalysis and SROP are the most effective for degradation of the three β-blockers. The operating parameters have to be optimized to the most suitable effectiveness.Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were biosynthesized. According to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, chalcone, the main phytochemical, is probably complexed with Zn ions that are then oxidized to ZnO NPs by atmospheric O2 during heating. The ZnO NPs were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. Sphere-like ZnO NPs were formed with 11 nm mean crystallite size, 5.2 m2 g-1 surface area, and 0.02 cm3 g-1 total pore volume. The synthesized ZnO showed excellent photocatalytic degradation (96.5±0.24% in 1 hour at 25 °C) of malachite green (MG) in aqueous solutions under ultraviolet light at optimum conditions; pH 10, MG initial concentration of 20 mg L-1, and ZnO dose of 1.5 g L-1. Also, ZnO showed very good reusability (92.9± 0.2% after five runs). The experimental data obeyed pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 = 0.92). The photocatalysis process was dependent on the following species in the order OH. > electron/positive hole pairs > O2.-. Moreover, photodegradation efficiency decreased in the presence of CO32-, HCO3-, and Cl-, but increased in the presence of NO3- and SO42- ions. Thus, the green synthesized ZnO NPs can be applied as an efficient photocatalyst for the removal of MG from aqueous media.Magnetic CuFe2O4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized with a coprecipitation method at 500 °C calcination temperature, and were utilized to degrade levofloxacin (LEV) as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator. The structure and composition of the nanocatalyst were characterized by a series of methods, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of the PMS concentration, the catalyst dosage, the LEV initial concentration, the pH value and the inorganic anions on the LEV degradation were also explored. The results revealed that the designed CuFe2O4/PMS system had high activity and excellent stability in the complex conditions. The degradation efficiency of LEV still reached above 80% after four recycles of CuFe2O4 catalyst. The reactive species quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis suggested the existence of superoxide radicals, single oxygen, hydroxy radicals and sulfate radicals, and the first two were dominant radical oxygen species. Based on the mechanism analyses, the efficient degradation of LEV was probably due to the continuous generation of reactive species under the condition of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) redox cycles. The research provided a reasonable reference for the PMS activation mechanism-based spinel-type ferrite catalysis. In recent years, three simple tracers (conductivity, turbidity and temperature) have shown their advantages to many other tracers for tracing and assessment of extraneous water (or inflow and infiltration, I/I) into sewer systems due to low detection cost and high monitoring frequency. A better understanding of the error and uncertainty of the three simple tracers on the quantification of I/I will help to improve the reliability and reduce the cost of actual projects. A large-scale experimental model simulating a 36 m long sewer was constructed for conducting extraneous water flow tests including groundwater infiltration, wastewater inflow and hot water inflow under different I/I flow rates and concentrations. The accuracy and uncertainty of the three tracers were estimated, and their correlation with tracer concentration difference before and after extraneous inflow was also analyzed. Experimental results provide guidance for the practical applicability of the three tracers under different I/I conditions.
