Specific antiseizure medications (ASM) would improve the outcome in post-stroke epilepsy (PSE). The aim of this multicenter observational study was to compare different antiseizure monotherapies in PSE.

We collected the data from 207 patients with PSE who did not change their initial antiseizure monotherapy during the period of 12 months. Efficacy was assessed by a standardized three month seizure frequency and seizure freedom. Safety was estimated by the reported side effects.

The mean three month seizure frequency was 1.9 ± 3.1 on eslicarbazepine, 2.1 ± 3.2 on lacosamide, 3.4 ± 4.4 on levetiracetam, 4.3 ± 6.8 on lamotrigine, and 5.1 ± 7.3 on valproate (p<0.05 for eslicarbazepine or lacosamide in comparison with levetiracetam, lamotrigine and valproate, respectively). The lowest seizure frequency and the highest seizure freedom was observed on ASMs acting via the slow inactivation of sodium channels in comparison to other mechanisms of action (0.7 ± 0.9 vs 2.2 ± 2.4, p<0.01). Among side effects, the most frequently reported were vertigo (25%) and tiredness (15.9%). They were similar in all investigated groups of ASM. The independent factors increasing seizure frequency that were identified in multiple regression analyses were increased size of infarction, cortical involvement, hemorrhagic transformation, neurological deficits at admission and functional impairment. Administration of ASM with the mechanism of action via the slow inactivation of sodium channels was an independent factor decreasing the seizure frequency.

Yet the secretion pattern of AMH over the estrous cycle in queens has not been investigated so far. Seven healthy sexually intact female cats were examined daily for signs of estrous behavior over a trial period of 4 months. Five queens showed regular estrous behavior, 1 queen was mated in her first heat and 1 queen never showed any signs of heat. To distinguish between inter-estrus and metestrus progesterone levels were determined. Serum samples for AMH and progesterone measurement were collected from the regular cycling queens in late anestrus, at several times during heat, inter-estrus and metestrus, from the mated queen during her first heat and during pregnancy, and in the acycling queen at various times during the trial period. The measured AMH values in anestrus were significantly (P less then 0.05) higher than in heat (P less then 0.001), metestrus (P = 0.12) and inter-estrus (P = 0.449). In anestrus the median AMH levels were 10.26 ng/ml (range 4.96 to 22.90 ng/ml), in heat 5.97 ng/ml (range 3.32- 22.96 ng/ml), in inter-estrus 10.47 (range 3.35-22.96 ng/ml) and in metestrus 6.38 ng/ml (range 4.50-10.75 ng/ml. The pregnant cat showed median AMH concentrations of 6.47 ng/ml (range 5.60-9.80 ng/ml) during her pregnancy. The acycling queen had solely low AMH values with a median concentration of 0.39 ng/ml. In conclusion there were high variations of the AMH levels among and within the individual cats and between heat cycles in the single cat. Remarkable high AMH concentrations were measured in the younger queens of the study in their first estrous cycles and also in anestrus, when less ovarian activity is expected. Further studies are necessary to emphasize the reasons for these high AMH concentrations especially in young queens.

Little is known about the relationship between childhood maltreatment and well-being in young adults, including the role of post-traumatic growth (PTG) in promoting better outcomes for young adults who have a history of childhood maltreatment (HCM).

To examine the relationship between child maltreatment and well-being among young adults, by considering the perpetrator and the extent of the maltreatment, as well as PTG among young adults with a HCM.

The sample comprised 537 young adults (aged 18-25; M=21.09years, SD=2.36) from across Australia, with 182 young adults in the sample forming the cohort with a HCM.

Participants' current well-being, the extent of maltreatment by their mother, father and other adults experienced as a child (<18years), and PTG was collected using an online survey. Tests of group differences and multiple regression were conducted to analyse the relationships between child maltreatment, PTG, and current well-being.

Maltreatment by one's mother or father predicted poorer current well-being, but not maltreatment by another adult. Young adults who identified as having a HCM had poorer well-being than those who did not. Within the cohort of those with a HCM, greater PTG predicted greater well-being, and also mitigated the negative relationship between child maltreatment by one's father and well-being.

Findings indicate that both the extent of child maltreatment and the relationship to the perpetrator have implications for well-being among young adults. PTG appeared to play a protective role, highlighting the potential therapeutic benefit of fostering PTG to improve well-being among young adults with a HCM.

Season of birth correlates to a wide range of health conditions throughout life measured by anthropometrics. This study explores whether the month of birth and weather during gestation influence male adult height, based on Spain's rural population before the end of the modernization process.

The database of heights (N=16.266) is composed of conscripts who reached the age of 21 between 1908 and 1985 (birth cohorts 1886-1965). The population sample has been taken from a municipality in inner Spain Hellín, in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, mainly an agrarian area, with poor resources and low income until the 1970s/1980s. Long noncoding RNA (LncRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) have emerged as critical regulators of this pathological process, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we first observed the expression changes of ALDBSSCG0000000898 (ALDB-898) and ssc-miR-122-5p in infected ileum tissue of piglets with C. perfringens type C, and then used C. perfringens beta2 toxin (CPB2) to induce intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) to construct an injury model. Cytometry kit 8 (CCK-8), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), Western blot, flow cytometry and fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran 4 (FITC-Dextran 4) flux assays were performed to study the effect of ALDB-898 and ssc-miR-122-5p in apoptosis, inflammation and intestinal barrier damage and inflammatory in IPEC-J2 cells induced by CPB2. In addition, dued the negative impact of ssc-miR-122-5p, thereby restoring the protection of ALDB-898. Our data showed that ALDB-898 could enhance the expression of OCLN through competitive binding ssc-miR-122-5p to suppress CPB2-induced damage. Rectangular full-thickness chondral defects (4 × 8 mm) were created in the trochlea of adult sheep (N = 16), debrided down to the subchondral bone plate without further treatment as controls (no treatment; n = 7) or treated with either 2 or 6 (n = 7 each) subchondral drill holes (diameter, 1.0 mm; depth, 10.0 mm). This research introduces a fully parametric algorithm for computing 3D fibre orientation as thickness is important for high-density or thick fibrous networks. The algorithm is tested for 3 major classes of nonwoven fabrics called low- (L), medium- (M) and high-density (H) ones. H fabric density is 6-8 times larger than the L fabric density. M fabric density (traditional intermediate fabric density) is 3-4 times larger than the L fabric density. Voxel models of experimental nonwoven webs were generated by an X-ray micro-CT (µCT) system and evaluated with the algorithm. Statistical results showed that a fraction of fibres orientated along the thickness direction increases as fibre density grows. To validate the accuracy of findings, deterministic voxelated virtual fibrous structures, created using mathematical functions were used.
