Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes with extreme diversity can make a contribution for individual variations to the immune response against SARS-COV-2 infection. This study aimed to explore the distributions of HLA class II alleles frequencies and their relations with disease severity in a group of Iranian COVID-19 patients. This prospective and case-control study was conducted on 144 COVID-19 patients including 46 cases with moderate form, 54 cases with severe and 44 cases with critical disease. HLA-DRB1 and -DQB1 allele families were determined by PCR-SSP method and compared between three groups of the patients and in comparison to 153 ethnic-matched healthy controls. The patients group showed lower frequencies of HLA-DRB1*15 (OR = 0.57, P = 0.06), DRB1*15 ~ DQB1*05 haplotype (P = 0.04) and DRB1*15/DRB1*04 genotype (P = 0.04) in compare with healthy controls. Moderate COVID-19 patients had higher frequencies of HLA-DRB1*04 (P = 0.03), HLA-DRB1*10 (P = 0.05) and DRB1*04/DRB1*11 genotype (P = 0.01). Also, a higher significantly frequency of HLA-DRB1*03 allele group was observed in the critical patients versus controls (P = 0.01). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the presence of DRB1*04 allele group was negatively associated with development of severe and critical disease (OR 0.289, P = 0.005). Our results indicate a possible contribution of some HLA class II alleles in disease severity and clinical features of COVID-19 disease.Th9 is a subset of CD4+ T cells that mainly secrete IL-9. Th9/IL-9 participates in immune response during Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia (MRSA) infection. Here, we collected bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from 30 children with MRSA pneumonia (MRSA group) and 10 children with bronchial foreign bodies (Control group). RT-PCR, ELISA and flow cytometry were used to detect the expression of miR-155 and IL-9 in BALF and the number of Th9 cells. CD4+ T cells isolated from BALF of MRSA and Control group were transfected with miR-155 mimic or inhibitor, and then induced Th9 cell differentiation. The results showed that the expression of miR-155 and IL-9 were significantly increased in BALF and Th9 cell of MRSA group, as well as the number of Th9 cells. miR-155 mimic upregulated IL-9 mRNA expression, IL-9 secretion and increased number of Th9 cells. On the contrary, miR-155 inhibitor inhibited IL-9 mRNA expression, IL-9 secretion and decreased number of Th9 cells. The dual luciferase assays demonstrated miR-155 can target binding to SIRT1 3'UTR. Moreover, overexpression of SIRT1 could reverse the effect of miR-155 mimic on IL-9 expression level, Th9 cell number and transcription factors PU.1 and IRF4 expression. In this review, we consider other putative prophylactic migraine drugs in development, including compounds targeting G-protein coupled receptors, glutamate, ion channels, and neuromodulatory devices. To investigate whether dry eye disease (DED) is a risk factor for COVID-19.
In this retrospective cohort study, patients who were diagnosed with DED by an ophthalmologist and whose Schirmer test was less than 5mm were identified. Patients who missed follow-up examinations, patients with malignancy, Human Immunodeficiency Virus patients and patients having undergone bone marrow transplantation were excluded. Among the DED patients, patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests were identified on October 11, 2020. Tanespimycin Subsequently, patients were divided into four age groups (25-49; 50-64; 65-79; and 80+). The COVID-19 prevalence per 100,000 people was determined for each age group, and risk analysis was performed by comparing this with the general population in Turkey.
In total, 10,023 DED patients were identified and included in the study. Among these, the PCR test was positive in 359 patients. The COVID-19 prevalence per 100,000 population in DED patients was calculated as 3581.7, while according to the Ministry of Health data, it was 524.7 in the general Turkish population. The odds ratio of DED patients versus the general population was 6.62 (P<0.001) (7.66 in the 25-49 group; 6.59 in the 50-64 group; 6.23 in the 65-79 group; and 7.24 in the 80+ age group).
The present study showed a high COVID-19 prevalence in DED patients compared to the general population. These findings support the concept that the ocular surface may be a gateway for SARS-CoV-2 and that the tear film is important part of the immune system.

Several vaccines have been developed and approved for use against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2; however, the use of personal protective equipment remains important owing to the lack of effective specific treatment and whole community immunity. Although patients with opioid use disorder have been shown to be more susceptible to traumatic injury, the impact of opioid use disorder after trauma-related admission remains poorly characterized. The present nationally representative study evaluated the association of opioid use disorder on clinical outcomes after traumatic injury warranting operative intervention.
The 2010 to 2018 Nationwide Readmissions Database was used to identify adult trauma victims who underwent major operative procedures. Injury severity was quantified using International Classification of Diseases Trauma Mortality Prediction Model. Entropy balancing was used to adjust for intergroup differences. Multivariable regression models were developed to assess the association of opioid use disorder on in-hospital mortality, perioperative complications, resource utilization, and readmissions.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and associated policies have had important downstream consequences for individuals, communities, and the healthcare system, and they appear to have been accompanied by rising interpersonal violence. The objective of this study was to evaluate the incidence of injuries owing to interpersonal violence after implementation of a statewide stay-at-home order in Pennsylvania in March2020.
Using the Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study registry, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with gunshot wounds, stab wounds, and blunt assault-related injuries attributable to interpersonal violence treated at Pennsylvania trauma centers from March 16 to July 31 of 2018, 2019, and2020.
There were fewer total trauma admissions in 2020 (17,489) vs 2018 (19,290) and 2019 (19,561). Gunshot wounds increased in 2020 to 737 vs 647 for 2019 and 565 for 2018 (P= .028), whereas blunt assault injuries decreased (P= .03). In all time periods, interpersonal violence primarily impactees.
The implementation of a stay-at-home order was accompanied by rising incidence of gunshot and stab wound injuries in Pennsylvania. Surgeons are traditionally categorized as working either in academic or private/community practice, but some transition between the two environments. Here, we profile current academic cardiothoracic surgeons who began their attending careers in private or community practice. We hypothesized that research activity may distinguish cardiothoracic surgeons who started in non-academic versus academic practice.
Publicly available data regarding professional history and research productivity were collected for 992 academic cardiothoracic surgeons on faculty at the 77 cardiothoracic surgery training programs in the United States in 2018.
