The patient had hemoptysis, which occurred with spitting. The patient had difficulty swallowing and discomfort when swallowing. Endoscopic examination revealed a blackish live foreign object in the hypopharynx with right local posterior hypopharyngeal oozing. Hypopharyngeal leech was suspected and removed immediately using forceps. After the leech was removed, the bleeding stopped immediately and the patient started swallowing and breathing comfortably. Pharyngeal leeches should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with hemoptysis, especially in patients with a history of drinking unfiltered water from sources where aquatic leeches are commonly found.

Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM)-based techniques are developing fast in facial reconstruction and osteosynthesis. Patient-specific implant (PSI) production is already sufficiently fast for everyday use and can be utilized even for primary trauma surgery such as orbital floor reconstruction after blowout fracture. Purpose of our study is to retrospectively analyze the 3-dimensional (3D) success of PSI reconstructions of orbital floor fractures in our unit. The authors analyzed retrospectively a 1-year cohort (n = 8) of orbital floor blow-out fractures that have been reconstructed using virtual surgical plan and CAD-CAM PSI. Postoperative computed topographies of patients were compared to their original virtual surgical plans. The 3D outcome and fitting of the PSI was good in all patients. Mean error for 3D position of the PSI was 1.3 to 1.8 mm (range 0.4 to 4.8 mm) and postoperative orbital volume was successfully restored in all of the patients. Use of CAD-CAM PSI for reconstruction of orbin all of the patients. Use of CAD-CAM PSI for reconstruction of orbital floor blow out fracture is reliable method and thus recommended.

The aim of this study was to report management and outcomes of patients in which conjunctival carcinomas arose in the anophthalmic socket.

The authors retrospectively analyzed the data of patients which presented the anophthalmic socket after surgery. The clinical records of 4 patients with histological diagnosis of conjunctival carcinoma in the anophthalmic socket, referred to our Department, between January 2014 and December 2019 was collected.

The study included 4 men (median age 58 years). A previous enucleation surgery had been performed in all patients due to previous ocular trauma for three patients (Case 1, 3, and 4) and due to a retinoblastoma for 1 patient (Case 2). All patients underwent surgical excision of the lesion and only 1 patient (case 3) underwent orbital exenteration due to the high-grade of the cancer. The most common tumor was the squamous cell carcinoma (2 cases) followed by 1 case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma and 1 case of carcinoma in situ. Systemic work-up was performed for all the patients. Conjunctival TNM, according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM staging system was used to stage the lesions. The median follow-up time was 15 months.

Considering the severity and rarity of these tumors, a careful ophthalmological examination of the cavity and a correct revision of the prosthesis should be mandatory in order to ensure the elimination of any macro and microscopic irregularities that can then in the long-term cause chronic inflammation of the tissues and consequently promote the growth of carcinomas.

Suitable tissue-engineered scaffolds to replace human anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are well developed clinically as the development of tissue engineering. As water-soluble polymer compound, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been wildly used as the materials to replace ACL. Immunology inhibitor The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of constructing tissue-engineered ACL by the copolymerization of PVA and collagen (PVA/COL).

PVA and COL were copolymerized at a mass ratio of 31. The pore size and porosity of the scaffold were observed by electron microscope. The maximum tensile strength of the scaffold was determined by electronic tension machine. The cytotoxicity of the scaffold was evaluated by MTT assay. The morphology of ACL cells cultured on the surface of the scaffold was observed by inverted microscope. The degradation of the scaffold was recorded in the rabbit model.

The average pore size of the polymer scaffold was 100 to 150 μm and the porosity was about 90%. The maximum tensile strength of the scaffold material was 8.10 ± 0.28 MPa. PVA/COL could promote the proliferation ability of 3T3 cells. ACL cells were successfully cultured on the surface of PVA/COL scaffold, with natural growth rate, differentiation, and proliferation. Twenty-four weeks after the plantation of scaffold, obvious degradations were observed in vivo.

The model of in-vitro tissue-engineered ACL was successfully established by PVA/COL scaffolds.

Alternative treatment approaches to improve the regeneration ability of damaged peripheral nerves are currently under investigation. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of leucocyte/platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) with or without a collagen membrane as a supporter on crushed sciatic nerve healing in a rat model. Recovery of motor function and electrophysiologic measurements were evaluated at 4 weeks postoperatively. The whole number of myelinated axons, peripheral nerve axon density, average nerve fiber diameter (μm), and G-ratio were analyzed and compered among the groups. Functional, electrophysiological, and histological evaluations showed no significant difference among the groups with the exception of the L-PRF with collagen membrane groups that showed relatively positive effects on the functional and histological nerve recovery. In addition, the collagen membrane with L-PRF can be effect in nerve regeneration.
