The reaction energetics of the multiple free radical scavenging mechanisms of ellagic acid and its derivatives were studied by DFT method. Ellagic acid and its derivatives that bear catechol or guaiacyl moieties can proceed multiple free radical scavenging processes. Intramolecular hydrogen-bonds were found in the most stable geometries of the investigated compounds and can influence the antioxidant activity of the related groups and hydrogen atom/proton loss sequence. The stronger hydrogen-bond, the weaker antioxidant activity of the hydrogen atom/proton-donating group. The preferred mechanisms vary among different phases. All of the investigated compounds prefer to trap free radicals by multiple HAT mechanisms in gas and benzene phases. The second HAT reaction preferably occurs in the same catechol or guaiacyl unit of the first HAT group with the formation of stable quinone or benzodioxole. The catechol and guaiacyl moieties not only retain high free radical scavenging ability of the parent compounds but even show increased potency for the second and fourth H+/e‒ reactions. In water phase, ellagic acid and its derivatives would proceed consecutively PL reactions from the OH groups. The formed di/tri/tetra-anion would proceed one/four electron transfers following with single/double SPLET mechanism and electron donation reactions until forming the stable quinone or benzodioxole.Rice (Oryza sativa) leaves accumulate phytoalexins in response to pathogen attack. The major phytoalexins in rice are diterpenoids such as momilactones, phytocassanes, and oryzalexins. We analyzed the abundance of momilactones A and B and phytocassanes A and D in UV-light-irradiated leaves of cultivars from the World Rice Core Collection (WRC). Both types of phytoalexins were detected in most cultivars; however, their accumulated amounts varied greatly from cultivar to cultivar. The amounts of momilactones A and B tended to be higher in japonica cultivars than those in indica cultivars. However, the accumulated amounts of phytocassanes were not related to differences in subspecies. In addition, variation in phytoalexin content was observed for seven wild rice species. During the analysis of momilactone A in cultivars from the WRC, two unknown compounds were detected in'Jaguary' and 'Basilanon'. We isolated these compounds from UV-light-irradiated leaves and determined their structures. The compound isolated from 'Jaguary' was an isomer of momilactone A that had an abietane skeleton, while that from 'Basilanon' was di-dehydrogenated phytocassane A; these compounds were denoted as oryzalactone and phytocassane G. Oryzalactone accumulated in only three cultivars, whereas phytocassane G accumulated in almost all of the cultivars from the WRC. These findings indicate the existence of large natural variation in the phytoalexin composition in rice.Seven undescribed C27 steroidal glycosides, Seladelicatulasine A-G, including six cholestanol glycosides and one spirostanol glycoside, were isolated from Selaginella delicatula. Their structures were elucidated by 1D/2D NMR spectra and HRESIMS analyses. The absolute configurations of the sugars were determined by enzymatic hydrolysis and GC/MS analyses. These cholestanol glycosides were isolated from the family Selaginellaceae for the first time. Seladelicatulasine F is characterized as a rare B-5,6-secosteroid. In addition, all the compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against cholinesterase (AChE/BChE) and monoamine oxidase (MAO-A/MAO-B). These steroidal glycosides displayed selective inhibition activities on cholinesterase. Seladelicatulasine A, B and E inhibited the AChE activity with IC50 values of 0.31, 0.09, and 0.04 μM, respectively. Seladelicatulasine A and F showed the strongest inhibition activity on BChE with IC50 values of 0.37 and 0.65 μM, respectively.Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide commonly injected through agricultural drip irrigation systems to reduce the population of vine mealybugs (P. ficus) in grape farms. There is a growing concern of potential human health effects of imidacloprid, however, there is limited information on the exposure to imidacloprid in farm workers. Imidacloprid exposure was evaluated in this exploratory study of 20 male migrant grape workers sampled five days after imidacloprid was injected in the irrigation system during winter and summer seasons. We administered a questionnaire on work activities, exposure characteristics, and socio-demographics and collected personal air, hand wipe, and spot urine samples. Heat exposure was also assessed. Spearman's correlation coefficients and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were utilized to evaluate associations and differences in imidacloprid exposures with socio-demographic, occupational, and environmental characteristics. All participants had less than a high school education and aboud absorption of imidacloprid. Thus, research on farm workers would benefit in the future by evaluating imidacloprid exposure in relation to heat stress and other occupational factors.

Residential greenness exposure is associated with many health outcomes, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mental disorders. However, few studies have assessed the effects of greenness exposure on activities of daily living (ADL). This study evaluated the relationship between greenness and ADL among elderly residents with long-term care insurance (LTCI) in Shanghai, China.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey using stratified random sampling among elderly residents with LTCI in six districts of Shanghai in August 2018. We quantitatively assessed residential greenness using satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values with 250-, 500-, and 1000-m buffers around each participant's residential address. We calculated the walk score to assess neighborhood walkability. Physical function was assessed using basic ADL (BADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL). We performed binary logistic regression and restricted cubic splines with R software.

The study participants were 1067 adults with a mean age of 82.40 years (standard deviation, 7.68 years). The mean NDVI value was 0.311. In the fully adjusted model, being in the highest-tertile NDVI

had a significant protective effect on BADL mild to none disability (odds ratio, 2.143; 95% confidence interval, 1.489-3.084) compared with participants in the lowest-tertile NDVI

. Restricted cubic spline showed a non-linearity association between NDVI values and BADL and IADL mild to none disability.

Our results indicate the importance of residential greenness exposure to physical function-especially for BADL disability. Well-designed longitudinal studies are needed to confirm our findings and investigate the underlying mechanisms.

In recent years, the relationship of object attachment within HD and CBSD to individual's self-concept has become the focus of direct research. On the basis of this literature, it seems that an underdeveloped, ambivalent, or discrepant self-concept could be a vulnerability for dysfunctional object attachment behavior. Further, the importance of objects in buttressing and extending self-concept, both individually and in relationship to others, appears to be a central function underlying pathological object attachment. An important future direction of research is whether directly addressing self-concept can serve as the next advancement for psychological treatments for these debilitating disorders.

The study aimed to investigate the marital status in a cohort of patients with functional seizures from seven countries in four continents. Factors associated with marital status were also explored.

Adult patients with functional seizures who were admitted to the epilepsy monitoring units at centers in Iran, Qatar, USA, France, Georgia, Egypt, and United Arab Emirates (UAE) were retrospectively identified. Marital status was assessed in the whole cohort.

Four hundred thirty-two patients were included (241 from Iran, 52 from France, 48 from Qatar, 41 from the USA, 19 from UAE, 18 from Egypt, and 13 from Georgia); 302 were women and 130 were men. One hundred fifty (35%) subjects were single, 245 (57%) were married, and 37 (8%) were separated (31 divorced, 7%; 6 widowed, 1%). Auras with functional seizures were less frequently reported by single people in comparison with that by married patients (54% vs. 61%) [odds ratio (OR) = 0.58]. Separated people compared with those who were married less often had auras with their functional seizures (27% vs. 61%; OR = 0.26) and more often reported a history of sexual abuse (49% vs. 12%; OR = 6.14).

The marital status has significant associations with the semiology of functional seizures. A history of sexual abuse is significantly associated with being separated and should be inquired and tackled appropriately during the management process of patients with functional seizures.

Several lines of evidence have suggested that exposure to enzyme-inducing antiseizure medications (EIASMs) may result in the subsequent development of hyperlipidemia, a well-known risk factor for vascular disease. This may be an issue of concern particularly in the context of additional comorbid vascular risk factors. We therefore aimed to investigate trends of and associations with the use of these medications among adult patients with epilepsy.

The cross-sectional Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) was interrogated to ascertain the prevalence of use of EIASMs by noninstitutionalized adult patients with epilepsy in the United States between the years 2004 and 2015. ERK inhibitor Any patient prescribed carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, or primidone within a given year was defined as having been prescribed an EIASM. Trends over three-year epochs were evaluated with univariate logistic regression, while associations with demographic factors, vascular risk factors, and vascular disease were evaluated using a cr risk factors (e.g., hypertension and older age) is prescribed EIASMs. This could potentially increase patients' risk for subsequent negative outcomes such as cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. Though utilization of these medications has decreased, further efforts toward increasing use of newer antiseizure medications (ASMs) that are not associated with similar risks may be warranted.

A substantial proportion of patients with comorbid vascular disease or vascular risk factors (e.g., hypertension and older age) is prescribed EIASMs. This could potentially increase patients' risk for subsequent negative outcomes such as cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. Though utilization of these medications has decreased, further efforts toward increasing use of newer antiseizure medications (ASMs) that are not associated with similar risks may be warranted.
