The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The company saw North America as a growth market for Washlet bidet seats and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto recorded Toto words to ensure that the future generation could read them. However, many words were replaced with foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

The early history of Toto, which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning, Toto made goods to meet the demand for modern, new urban housing. To accomplish this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the country that produced ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the firm's market share in the world.

By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and to increase profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to managing its supply chain and applied the same methodology in its sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The most recent toilet features a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green procurement policy. Apart from toilets, Toto produces bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than typical models.

The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their evolution and its group companies (all having to do with ceramics) and the history of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even includes a bathroom with the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto the members of the group performed session work for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia you'd expect the group to be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group started out as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without problems. The record companies put Toto under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would drop them. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into you. The album also includes some more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR, which should seem like a complete blunder, but works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Tours

The band has entertained millions of people across the world, with sold-out shows in Europe, North America and Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The band has a vast repertoire, and its catalog has been listened to more than one billion times on streaming services across the world. The band's music has been influential to many generations of fans.

Steve Lukather and Joe Williams have developed a deep colorful friendship that is thriving professionally on a global scale. In 2018, the duo celebrated 40 years of Tours Around The Sun by a hugely profitable global tour. The album of the same name debuted at 5 on the Billboard 200. The new tour by the band features their greatest hits and rarely performed live deep cuts, as well as some of the songs from Lukather and Williams the catalogs of their respective albums.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more powerful, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard playing was as well more refined, more precise and less akin to previous recordings.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and then embarked on a world tour support it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
