All the current research about the function of nRNAs in SCIRI will be summarized one by one in this review.Background Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in male and female patients worldwide, little is known about the effect of sex and gender on TBI outcomes. Objectives This systematic review summarizes the evidence on the effect of sex and gender on core TBI outcomes. Methods All English-language studies from six literature databases that addressed core outcomes in adults with TBI and included sex or gender, TBI severity, and age in their analyses were considered eligible. Two reviewers extracted data, and two reviewers assessed study quality using tools recommended by the National Institutes of Health. The results were sorted according to time post-injury, injury severity, gender equity ranking of the study's country of origin, and outcomes studied. The results from the included studies were grouped based on the approach taken in reporting their respective findings. Results and Limitations Of 172 articles assessed, 58 studies were selected, comprising 1, 265, 955 participants with TBI (67% male across all studies) of all injury severities. All studies were conducted in countries with a very high or high human development index, while the Gender Inequality Index (GII) varied. While the heterogeneity across studies limited any meaningful conclusions with respect to the role of sex and gender, we did observe that as gender equality ranking improved, differences between male and female participants in outcomes would diminish. Inclusion of social equity parameters in the studies was limited. Conclusions and Implications The non-uniform findings observed bring forth the need to develop and use a comprehensive and consistent methodology in the study of sex and gender post-TBI, incorporating social equity parameters to uncover the potential social underpinnings of gender effects on health and functional outcomes. Systematic Review Registration CRD42018098697.Objectives Thousands of designated COVID-19 hospitals have been set up in China to fight the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Anecdotal reports indicate a falling rate of acute stroke diagnoses in these hospitals during the COVID-19 period. We conducted an exploratory single-center analysis to estimate the change in acute stroke presentation at the designated COVID-19 hospitals. Methods This retrospective observational study included all patients admitted to Yongchuan Hospital Affiliated to Chongqing Medical University with acute stroke between January 24 and March 10, 2020. Patient demographics, characteristics of the stroke, treatment details, and clinical outcomes were compared with those of patients admitted in the corresponding period in the year before (2019, "the pre-COVID-19 period"). Subgroup analysis was performed in the ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke groups. Results A total of 110 patients presented with acute stroke symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic, compared with 173 patients in the pre-COVID-19 pn in the pre-COVID-19 period. Conclusions Although fewer acute stroke patients sought medical care in this designated COVID-19 hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, this type of hospital was more efficient for timely treatment of acute stroke. Recognizing how acute strokes presented in designated COVID-19 hospitals will contribute to appropriate adjustments in strategy for dealing with acute stroke during COVID-19 and future pandemics.Objective To assess whether angiographic thrombus surface phenotype has an impact on efficacy of contact aspiration (CA) thrombectomy in patients with basilar artery occlusion (BAO). Methods From January 2016 to December 2019, consecutive stroke patients with a BAO and first-line CA were analyzed in this retrospective study. We assessed baseline and imaging characteristics and treatment and clinical outcomes. We rated thrombus surface phenotype on pre-treatment digital subtraction angiography in a three-reader-consensus setting. Primary outcome was complete recanalization (modified treatment in cerebral ischemia [mTICI] 3 and arterial occlusive lesion [AOL] 3) after first-line CA without additionally stent retriever passes. Data analysis was stratified according to thrombus surface phenotype and complete first-line recanalization. Results Seventy-eight patients met the inclusion criteria. Median age was 74 years (IQR 64-80), 64% were male, and median baseline NIHSS score was 24 (IQR 7-32). Thirty patients had a regular and 16 patients had an irregular thrombus phenotype. Thrombus surface was not assessable in 32 patients. However, assessment of thrombus phenotype is frequently not feasible in BAO.Background Direct teleconsultations between emergency medical services (EMS) crews and hospital-based stroke neurologists are mandated in the Czech Republic as triage and prenotification tool in acute stroke patients. The main aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy as well as quality of such teleconsultations in daily clinical practice. Methods This is a descriptive analysis of teleconsultations between EMS paramedic crews and hospital-based neurologists in a geographically defined region of the Czech Republic (Moravian-Silesian region) between October 2018 to December 2018. All teleconsultations were analyzed for length and content. Content analysis included the following information date, age, sex, prehospital neurological deficit(s), known/unknown time of symptom onset, anticoagulation status, vital signs, premorbid disability, and patient ID/insurance company number. Results Within the study period, paramedics conducted 522 calls across 6 stroke centers. Of these, 334 (64%) calls were conducted because patients met pre-established prehospital criteria for suspected acute stroke. Median call duration was 1 min 44 s ± 56 s (minimum 50 s, maximum 5 min 5 s). Amongst the analyzed prehospital teleconsultations, stroke onset time was reported in 95% of cases, neurological deficit in 96%, significant co-morbidities in 53%, premorbid disability in 37%, and anticoagulation status in 53%. Conclusion Teleconsultations between paramedics and hospital-based neurologists are not time-consuming. Stroke onset time and severity of neurological deficit are consistently communicated, however other important information such as comorbidities, premorbid disability, and anticoagulation status are reported inconsistently.Consensus criteria on corticobasal degeneration (CBD) include alien limb (AL) phenomena. However, the gist of the behavioral features of AL is still "a matter of debate." CBD-related AL has so far included the description of involuntary movements, frontal release phenomena (frontal AL), or asomatognosia (posterior or "real" AL). In this context, the most frequent symptoms are language and praxis deficits and cortical sensory misperception. However, asomatognosia requires, by definition, intact perception and cognition. Thus, to make a proper diagnosis of AL in the context of CBD, cognitive and language dysfunctions must be carefully verified and objectively assessed. We reviewed the current literature on AL in CBD and now propose that the generic use of the term AL should be avoided. This catchall AL term should instead be deconstructed. We propose that the term AL is appropriate to describe clinical features associated with specific brain lesions. More discrete sets of regionally bound clinical signs that depend on dysfunctions of specific brain areas need to be assessed and presented when posing the diagnosis. Thus, in our opinion, the AL term should be employed in association with precise descriptions of the accompanying involuntary movements, sensory misperceptions, agnosia-asomatognosia contents, and the presence of utilization behavior. The review also offers an overview of functional magnetic resonance imaging-based studies evaluating AL-related phenomena. In addition, we provide a complementary set of video clips depicting CBD-related involuntary movements that should not mistakenly be interpreted as signs of AL.Introduction Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder with multiple motor and vocal tics whose neural basis remains unclear. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have demonstrated white matter microstructural alternations in TS, but the findings are inconclusive. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the most consistent white matter deficits in patients with TS. Method By systematically searching online databases up to December 2020 for all DTI studies comparing fractional anisotropy (FA) between patients with TS and healthy controls (HCs), we conducted anisotropic effect size-signed differential mapping (AES-SDM) meta-analysis to investigate FA differences in TS, as well as performed meta-regression analysis to explore the effects of demographics and clinical characteristics on white matter abnormalities among TS. Results A total of eight datasets including 168 patients with TS and 163 HCs were identified. We found that TS patients showed robustly decreased FA in the corpus callosum (CC) and right inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) compared with HCs. These two regions preserved significance in the sensitivity analysis. No regions of increased FA were reported. Meta-regression analysis revealed that age, sex, tic severity, or illness duration of patients with TS were not linearly correlated with decreased FA. Conclusion Patients with TS display deficits of white matter microstructure in the CC and right ILF known to be important for interhemispheric connections as well as long association fiber bundles within one hemisphere. Because the results reported in the primary literature were highly variable, future investigations with large samples would be required to support the identified white matter changes in TS.Background Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) refers to a stroke subtype characterized by the disturbance of cerebral venous outflow caused by venous thrombosis. Previous studies have reported a range of factors that predict the prognosis of CVT. This study is aimed to find out whether systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) are suitable as potential indicators of the severity and clinical outcome in CVT patients. Methods The CVT patients admitted to Xuanwu Hospital from January 2014 to December 2019 were enrolled. The severity of CVT was assessed by the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and intracranial pressure (ICP) at the time of admission. The modified Rankin score (mRS) was assessed at 6 months of follow-up. Results One hundred fifty-six CVT patients were enrolled with a mean age of 35.8 ± 12.8 years. A percentage of 55.8% of the CVT patients recruited were female, and 17.3% were either pregnant or in perinatal period. Headache was the most common symptom. SBP and DBP were not correlated with NIHSS at admission.
