ing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or any other coronavirus, we found that the theoretical risk of virus diffusion through surgical smoke cannot be excluded. In this study, we aimed to reveal the long-term impact of radiotherapy on recovery of facial animation function after facial nerve repair using sural nerve grafting in patients undergoing parotid gland surgery. We reviewed the medical records of patients who did or did not undergo radiotherapy following sural nerve graft repair after parotid gland surgery. Facial function metrics, such as House-Brackmann (HB) scale scores and FACEgram measurements, were used to compare facial muscle function between groups. Postoperative radiotherapy was performed in 14 of 21 patients. There was no significant difference regarding successful repair (HB I-III), which was achieved in three of 14 irradiated patients and two of seven non-irradiated patients (p = 0.181). On FACEgram analysis, there was no significant difference in mean smile excursion length between the radiotherapy group (9.16 ± 8.48 mm) and the control group (6.15 ± 4.24 mm) (p = 0.392). There was no significant difference in the mean angle of excursion between the irradiated group (3.59 ± 3.73°) and the non-irradiated group (1.06 ± 5.24°) (p = 0.216). In this study, postoperative radiotherapy did not appear to prevent successful recovery of facial function after sural nerve grafting in parotid gland surgery.Purpose Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is known to be a refractory disease in the oral and maxillofacial field. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) and tocopherol (TP) on an ORN animal model focused on bone healing. Materials and methods A total of 48 Sprague-Dawley rats were used 40 received a single irradiation dose of 35 Gy on the left mandible, and eight were used as the nonirradiated control group. GLPG1690 PDE inhibitor The rats received PTX (T1, C1), TP (T2, C2), a combination of PTX and TP (T3, C3), or normal saline (T4, C4). Three weeks after irradiation, the mandibular posterior teeth were extracted. The rats were sacrificed 4 weeks after extraction. Results In the T3 group, bone volume/tissue volume was 19.62 ± 16.03 (%), bone mineral density was as 0.31 ± 0.16 (g/cm3) in the micro-CT analysis, which were higher than that of other groups (p = 0.025, p = 0.012, respectively). In the histological analysis, bone regeneration was the most prominent in the T3 group. The ratio of empty lacunae was the highest in the T4 group, 68.77 ± 15.47 (%, p = 0.004). Immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of TNF-α was relatively lower in the T3 than in the T4 or T2 groups. The RT-qPCR showed the expression level of PECAM, VEGF-A, and osteocalcin was more than twofold as high as in the T3 group compared to the other groups. Conclusion The combination of PTX and TP appears to promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis in a rat ORN model. Therefore, PTX and TP might be useful in the treatment and prevention of ORN.Standard semen parameters are often used to predict male fertility, but whether the 2010 World Health Organization (WHO 2010) thresholds are better predictors than the 1999 thresholds has not been investigated. In this study, we addressed this issue using sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) as a marker of male fertility in 134 subfertile male individuals. To compare the predictive value of the 1999 thresholds with the 2010 cutoffs, the Youden indices (YIs) of all possible thresholds were calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and compared to each other and to the respective YIs of optimal thresholds. We found that the area under the ROC curves of progressive motility and vitality was the highest among standard semen parameters, and that the YI of both parameters from the 2010 manual was comparable to the respective optimal YIs. In contrast, the threshold of sperm concentration and total sperm number from both WHO recommendations demonstrated low YIs, with substantial differences to the respective optimal YIs. The YIs of normal morphology cutoffs from both WHO manuals were slightly different from each other and from the respective optimal YIs. In conclusion, the 2010 thresholds for progressive motility and vitality are superior to the 1999 thresholds in predicting SDF, whereas the cutoff value of sperm concentration, total sperm number and normal morphology may need further revisions to increase their accuracy.Petrosectomy is a debilitating intervention, consisting of a resection of the bone forming the external auditory canal, the middle ear and sometimes the internal ear as well. The cavity formed after this surgery can lead to infectious complications. Reconstruction is an essential element for patients' rehabilitation. Most cases require local rotation flaps such as temporal muscle flap. However, when the remaining defect is too large or when the structures have been altered by radiotherapy, free flaps are the most adequate solution for repair. Upon review of the literature, there are very few articles providing options regarding reconstruction possibilities post-petrosectomy. Plastic surgeons are often unfamiliar with this indication, therefore, it is essential to call their attention in order to provide the best options of care in these difficult and complicated cases where possibilities are limited. That is why, it is important for us to share our experience in this domain through the example of our patient presenting with a large osteoradionecroses of the petrous bone, requiring resection and immediate reconstruction using a free flap.Pulp and paper mill wastewater contains lignin related synthetic, aromatic and chlorinated chemical compounds. Extracting lignin from pulp and paper mill wastewater is one way of recovering valuable organic material. Due to its complex structure, lignin is difficult to break and provides economical and technical provocations in biomass recovery. The conventional wastewater treatment processes are seldom efficacious for the complete removal of lignin from paper mill effluents. A wide range of thermal, mechanical and physico-chemical methods have been reported for the removal of lignin. Moreover, biological method of lignin removal employed microorganisms including bacteria and fungi as a one-step treatment and/or amalgamation of various physico-chemical techniques. Compared with other methods, biological process for degradation of lignin is regarded as eco-friendly, cost-effective and sustainable. Therefore, this review will provide insight into the recent breakthroughs and future trends in lignin removal with special emphasis on biological treatment and scope of lignin utilization.
