Even though entry routes of P. salmonis in fish are not fully clear yet, the skin seems to be the main portal in some salmonid species. Despite the importance of fish mucous skin barrier in fighting waterborne pathogens, the interaction between salmonid skin mucus and the bacterium is unknown. This study seeks to determine the in vitro changes in the growth of two Chilean P. salmonis strains (LF-89-like and EM-90-like genotypes) and the type strain LF-89T under exposures to skin mucus from Salmo salar and Oncorhynchus mykiss, as well as changes in the cytotoxic effect of P. salmonis on the SHK-1 cells following exposures. The results suggest that the growth of three P. salmonis strains was not significantly negatively affected under exposures to skin mucus (adjusted at 100 μg total protein ml-1 ) of O. mykiss (69 ± 18 U lysozyme ml-1 ) and S. salar (48 ± 33 U lysozyme ml-1 ) over time. However, the cytotoxic effect of P. salmonis, pre-exposed to salmonid skin mucus, on the SHK-1 cell line was reliably identified only towards the end of the incubation period, suggesting that the mucus had a delaying effect on the cytotoxic response of the cell line to the bacterium. These results represent a baseline knowledge to open new avenues of research intended to understand how P. salmonis faces the fish mucous skin barrier.

Olive-derived antioxidants have been shown to affect the oxidative status of meat and have also been associated with greater consumption of glucose, which might affect glycogen stores and muscle characteristics. This study evaluated the effect of oleuropein extract supplementation (OLE) versus vitamin E + Se (VE), and their combination (VEOLE), in pig diets, on pH, drip loss, the proportion of free fatty acids, and meat stability, and their prediction by blood oxidative status markers.

The drip loss of muscle was lower in antioxidant-supplemented groups when compared with controls. α-Tocopherol concentration and total fatty acids profile were not affected by dietary oleuropein supplementation. However, OLE and VEOLE had lower free n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels when compared with VE and tended to have higher free monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) levels. Furthermore, the VEOLE group had lower free n-6 PUFA levels when compared with controls or VE, whereas the OLE group had intermediated value in Mediterranean countries. The VEOLE group was the most effective for reducing lipid oxidation and for the production of polyunsaturated free fatty acids in meat, which would result in lower rancidity formation and better aroma development in products. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Natural environments within agricultural landscapes have been recognized as reservoirs of biodiversity and, therefore, providers of fundamental ecosystem services to human beings. Bees are the main providers of pollination and thus contribute to the production of food consumed worldwide. In this work, we evaluated the distribution of bees in an agricultural landscape of coffee plantation before and after coffee flowering. We aimed at understanding how richness, abundance and composition of bee communities vary among the different vegetation types within and around the coffee crops.

A total of 638 bees were collected - 312 in the dry season and 326 in the rainy season - totaling 85 species. The sampling methods collected different species, which provided complementary sampling. Only Euglossa leucotricha and Eulaema nigrita were recurrent in both seasons and vegetation types. There was no temporal difference in richness or abundance; however, both varied in relation to the vegetation type and were higher in the coffee-native transition area. Diverging from richness or abundance, the composition of the communities differed regarding season and vegetation types.

Many interventional procedures aim at changing soft tissue perfusion or blood flow. One problem at present is that soft tissue perfusion and its changes cannot be assessed in an interventional suite because cone-beam computed tomography is too slow (it takes 4-10s per volume scan). In order to address the problem, we propose a novel method called IPEN for Intra-operative four-dimensional soft tissue PErfusion using a standard x-ray system with No gantry rotation.

IPEN uses two input datasets (a) the contours and locations of three-dimensional regions-of-interest (ROIs) such as arteries and sub-sections of cancerous lesions, and (b) a series of x-ray projection data obtained from an intra-arterial contrast injection to contrast enhancement to wash-out. IPEN then estimates a time-enhancement curve (TEC) for each ROI directly from projections without reconstructing cross-sectional images by maximizing the agreement between synthesized and measured projections with a temporal roughness penalty. When path lengion index values computed from the estimated TECs agreed well with the true values (R≥0.985, P<0.0001).

The IPEN algorithm can estimate ROI-specific TECs with high accuracy especially when 3×3 pixel averaging is applied, even when lesion enhancement is heterogeneous, or ROI contours are inaccurate but the SDC is at least 0.81.

In our study, to investigate the association between LILRA3 polymorphism and IBD susceptibility, LILRA3 polymorphism was assessed in 378 IBD patients and 509 healthy controls. Quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR), Western blot and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were employed to detect the LILRA3 expression in IBD patient blood and intestinal samples. The human U937 monocyte cell line was employed to establish LILRA3 over-expressing cells and the effects of LILRA3 on the biological behaviors of U937 cells were systematically explored. Although no association of the polymorphism with IBD development was found, LILRA3 expression was markedly increased in IBD patients compared with healthy controls.
