Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are a powerful tool for detailed studies of altered properties of liquids in confinement, in particular, of changed structures and dynamics. They allow, on one hand, for perfect control and systematic variation of the geometries and interactions inherent in confinement situations and, on the other hand, for type-selective and position-resolved analyses of a huge variety of structural and dynamical parameters. Here, we review MD simulation studies on various types of liquids and confinements. The main focus is confined aqueous systems, but also ionic liquids and polymer and silica melts are discussed. Results for confinements featuring different interactions, sizes, shapes, and rigidity will be presented. Special attention will be given to situations in which the confined liquid and the confining matrix consist of the same type of particles and, hence, disparate liquid-matrix interactions are absent. Findings for the magnitude and the range of wall effects on molecular positions and orientations and on molecular dynamics, including vibrational motion and structural relaxation, are reviewed. Moreover, their dependence on the parameters of the confinement and their relevance to theoretical approaches to the glass transition are addressed.

This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of a combined brief cognitive behavioral plus bright light therapy (CBT-I+Light) in women receiving chemotherapy.

Women (N=101) were randomly assigned to CBT-I+Light or treatment as usual plus relaxation audios (TAU+). Participants completed sleep diaries and wore an actigraph during the 6-week intervention period. Patient-reported outcomes were assessed at baseline, mid-point (week 3), and later (week 6). Cognitive (i.e., dysfunctional sleep beliefs, pre-sleep cognitions, and arousal) and behavioral (i.e., time in bed awake and day-to-day out-of-bedtime variability) mechanisms were examined.

Cognitively, both groups declined significantly in overall dysfunctional sleep beliefs from pre- to post-intervention (both

<.04); however, they did not differ on sleep-related beliefs nor pre-sleep cognitions and arousal at post-intervention (both

>.50). Dysfunctional beliefs sleep expectations subscale was lower in CBT-I+Light versus TAU+ (

=.01). Behavior samples. Whilst intervention brevity is important, more potent interventions may be required to achieve robust changes in target mechanisms.Chromosome 17q12-q21 is the most replicated genetic locus for childhood-onset asthma. Polymorphisms in this locus containing ∼10 genes interact with a variety of environmental exposures in the home and outdoors to modify asthma risk. However, the functional basis for these associations and their linkages to the environment have remained enigmatic. Within this extended region, regulation of gene expression or protein function as the underlying mechanism and to explore the potential functions of GSDMB that may influence the risk of developing asthma during childhood.The reduction of nitrite (NO2-) to generate nitric oxide (NO) is a significant area of research due to their roles in the global nitrogen cycle. Here, we describe various modifications of the tris(5-cyclohexyliminopyrrol-2-ylmethyl)amine H3[N(piR)3] ligand where the steric bulk and acidity of the secondary coordination sphere were explored in the non-heme iron system for nitrite reduction. The cyclohexyl and 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl variants of the ligand were used to probe the mechanism of nitrite reduction. While previously stoichiometric addition of nitrite to the iron(II)-species generated an iron(III)-oxo complex, changing the secondary coordination sphere to mesityl resulted in an iron(III)-hydroxo complex. Subsequent addition of an electron and two protons led to the release of water and regeneration of the starting iron(II) catalyst. This sequence mirrored the proposed mechanism of nitrite reduction in biological systems, where the distal histidine residue shuttles protons to the active site. Computational studies aimed at interrogating the dissimilar behavior of the cyclohexyl and mesityl ligand systems resulting in Fe(III)-oxo and Fe(III)-hydroxo complexes, respectively, shed light on the key role of H-bonds involving the secondary coordination sphere in the relative stability of these species.Since its initial identification in 1992 as a possible class 1 cell-surface receptor without a known parent ligand, receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1 (ROR1) has stimulated research, which has made apparent its significance in embryonic development and cancer. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) was the first malignancy found to have distinctive expression of ROR1, which can help distinguish leukemia cells from most noncancer cells. learn more Aside from its potential utility as a diagnostic marker or target for therapy, ROR1 also factors in the pathophysiology of CLL. This review is a report of the studies that have elucidated the expression, biology, and evolving strategies for targeting ROR1 that hold promise for improving the therapy of patients with CLL or other ROR1-expressing malignancies.

Lung ultrasound detects pulmonary congestion as B-lines at rest, and more frequently, during exercise stress echocardiography (ESE).

We performed ESE plus lung ultrasound (4-site simplified scan) in 4392 subjects referred for semi-supine bike ESE in 24 certified centers in 9 countries. B-line score ranged from 0 (normal) to 40 (severely abnormal). Five different populations were evaluated control subjects (n=103); chronic coronary syndromes (n=3701); heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (n=395); heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (n=70); ischemic mitral regurgitation ≥ moderate at rest (n=123). In a subset of 2478 patients, follow-up information was available.

During ESE, B-lines increased in all study groups except controls. Age, hypertension, abnormal ejection fraction, peak wall motion score index, and abnormal heart rate reserve were associated with B-lines in multivariable regression analysis. Stress B lines (hazard ratio, 2.179 [95% CI, 1.015-4.680];

=0.046) and ejection fraction <50% (hazard ratio, 2.942 [95% CI, 1.268-6.822];

=0.012) were independent predictors of all-cause death (n=29 after a median follow-up of 29 months).

B-lines identify the pulmonary congestion phenotype at rest, and more frequently, during ESE in ischemic and heart failure patients. Stress B-lines may help to refine risk stratification in these patients.

Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) is an increasingly recognized disease, in which atrial fibrillation (AF) has been shown to be prevalent. Cardiac scintigraphy with technetium-99m-pyrophosphate (99mTc-PyP) labeled bone-seeking tracers is used to noninvasively make the diagnosis of ATTR-CA, based on ventricular myocardial uptake. Assessment of atrial wall uptake (AU) on 99mTc-PyP is currently not used in the clinical setting Methods We analyzed a cohort of patients referred for 99mTc-PyP scan at a tertiary center to explore AU and associations between any and incident AF, ATTR-CA, and all-cause mortality.

Among 580 patients included, 296 patients (51%) had a diagnosis of AF; 164 patients (28%) had scans consistent with ATTR-CA while 117 patients (20%) had AU. Of 117 patients with AU, 107 (91%) had any AF. In contrast, of 463 patients without AU 191(41%) had any AF. Of those with AU, 59/117(50%) patients had a 99mTc-PyP diagnosis of ATTR-CA while 58/117(50%) patients did not have such a diagnosis mTc-PyP scans could potentially miss an earlier disease manifestation, or an additional risk factor for any/incident AF.

In a consecutive cohort of patients undergoing 99mTc-PyP scans, 20% had AU, which was statistically associated with any AF, independently of ATTR-CA diagnosis and sex. AU was associated with significantly lower freedom from incident AF at 1-year. Overlooking AU on 99mTc-PyP scans could potentially miss an earlier disease manifestation, or an additional risk factor for any/incident AF.

Emerging and future SARS-CoV-2 variants may jeopardize the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns. Therefore, it is important to know how the different vaccines perform against diverse SARS-CoV-2 variants.

In a prospective cohort of 165 SARS-CoV-2 naive health care workers in the Netherlands, vaccinated with either one of four vaccines (BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, AZD1222 or Ad26.COV2.S), we performed a head-to-head comparison of the ability of sera to recognize and neutralize SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs; Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Omicron). Repeated serum sampling was performed 5 times during a year (from January 2021 till January 2022), including before and after booster vaccination with BNT162b2. Four weeks after completing the initial vaccination series, SARS-CoV-2 wild-type neutralizing antibody titers were highest in recipients of mRNA-1273, followed by recipients of BNT162b2 (geometric mean titers (GMT) of 358 [95% CI 231-556] and 214 [95% CI 153-299], respectively; p<0.05), and substantialerall, this study shows that the mRNA vaccines appear superior to adenovirus vector-based vaccines in inducing neutralizing antibodies against VOCs four weeks after initial vaccination and after booster vaccination, which implies the use of mRNA vaccines for both initial and booster vaccination.Donor-acceptor (D-A) hybrid frameworks with visual X-ray photochromism at room temperature are fascinating because of their promising applications as X-ray detectors. Herein, a 3-fold interpenetrated D-A hybrid framework, [Eu(bcbp)1.5(DMF)(H2O)2][Co(CN)6]·4H2O·CH3OH (1), has been obtained by incorporating electron-rich Co(CN)63- into the electron-deficient europium viologen framework, which interestingly exhibits ultraviolet and low-power X-ray dual photochromism with a remarkable color change from brown to green. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the X-ray photochromic behavior of hybrid 1 could be attributed to its D-A hybrid structural feature increasing the extent of photoinduced electron transfer and thus photogenerated radical species upon X-ray irradiation. Meanwhile, due to the introduction of emissive lanthanide cations in the D-A system, hybrid 1 exhibits photomodulated luminescence properties.

Pediatric use of the emergency department (ED) for nonurgent reasons is common in the United States. Patients with nonurgent conditions can receive more appropriate, cost-efficient care in other settings. We conducted a systematic literature review to understand the breadth of factors that contribute to use of the ED for nonurgent conditions by pediatric patients in the United States.

The literature search was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and was guided by the social-ecological model for synthesis of articles. Published articles were identified through a search of Academic Search Ultimate, Google Scholar, and PubMed. All articles were organized and managed using Endnote software and screened for eligibility criteria before full-text review.

The initial search yielded 679 articles with 530 articles remaining after the removal of duplicates. Of these, 31 articles were reviewed in full text with 19 remaining for the final analysis. All articles assessed individual-level factors, including parental perceptions of ED and health literacy.
