The Branchinectidae is a diverse and widely distributed group of anostracans. The majority of work on the group has focused on the morphological delineation of taxa and biogeography. Here we present a molecular phylogeny for select members of the family to better understand the distribution of morphological variation among species, and test biogeographic models of speciation for the group. Although we conducted both molecular and morphological phylogenies for the Branchinectidae, the morphological analysis did not support our molecular phylogeny and it did not support previous species group concepts based on geography. Our molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests that the family may have originated in Eurasia and found support for numerous species groups. These phylogenetic groups assisted in delineating species groups that are all definable morphologically and/or ecologically. The peripatric speciation model was supported from our analysis, offering credence to previously published speciation models in anostracans. This suggests that these processes may be important in other Branchiopoda and should be rigorously evaluated when delineating species.The present study describes Pontopolycope orientalis sp. nov. (Polycopidae), which was collected from the shallow sandy bottom off of Nagannu Island, Okinawa Prefecture, southwestern Japan. This new species is the first living representative of Pontopolycope from the Indo-Pacific region. We also provided a key to identifying five living congeners throughout the world's oceans. Since Pontopolycope is defined by the morphological characteristics of the carapace, the following five fossil and subfossil (empty valve) species of Polycope (Polycopidae) are moved to Pontopolycope Pontopolycope luxuriosa (Herrig, 1964) comb. nov., P. sanctacatherinae (Whatley and Downing, 1983) comb. nov., P. krauseae (Herrig, 1994) comb. nov., P. proboscidea (Herrig, 1994) comb. nov., and P. isolata (Whatley, Jones and Wouters, 2000) comb. nov. Finally, the nucleotide sequence data of three genes (18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1) of the new species are provided for future systematic and phylogenetic studies.We examined the relationship between individual heterozygosity of male Red-breasted Flycatchers (Ficedula parva; a small long-distance migratory, socially monogamous bird species) and their mating success, arrival time and age. Using eight polymorphic microsatellite loci, we found that male heterozygosity is related to both mating success and arrival time, but not to age. Mated and earlier arriving males had higher heterozygosity than later arrivals and bachelors, but we did not find a relationship between age and individual heterozygosity of males. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide evidence about the relationship between individual genetic diversity and arrival time, thus arrival time could be used as a signal of individual heterozygosity and quality.In-depth knowledge of distribution and factors influencing it is important for species conservation and management. For conservation in regions with limited resources and species with similar ecological requirements, it is important to properly assess the extent of competition extent between wild and domestic species. We attempted to use point process framework to estimate the function of resource selection in blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur) in areas influenced by pastoralism in a western Himalayan region. Our study is the first attempt to use this framework to estimate resource selection on a dataset not collected using radio-telemetry. Spatial locations of blue sheepg rangelands, which when tied with dietary patterns will give a better idea for proper conservation measures in the future.Lycaenidae is one of the larger of the world's butterfly families, based on number and diversity of species, but knowledge of roosting in this group is sparse. Zizina otis riukuensis and Zizeeria maha okinawana are two small lycaenids that are commonly found in urban settings and widely distributed across much of Asia. We conducted experiments on a university campus to determine the plant species and plant structures commonly used by these two blues when roosting. We also tested the hypothesis that gregarious roosting exists in these two blues by demonstrating the non-random distribution of roosting blues and the tight mapping of their roosts to the spatial distribution of specific plant species and/or specific plant structures, as well as by demonstrating behavioral interactions among individuals during roosting-assembly. We found that both Z. otis and Z. maha roosted primarily on flowers and fruits of Tridax procumbens and Vernonia cinerea. We also found that these blues formed conspicuous roosting aggregations with significant positive associations between the flowers and fruits of both T. procumbens and V. cinerea and the blues. Shelter-dwelling blenniiform fishes of the genus Neoclinus exhibit this trans-Pacific distribution pattern with three species in the eastern North Pacific and eight species in the western North Pacific. We reconstructed the phylogeny of the Neocliniini (Neoclinus and the monotypic Mccoskerichthys) using six genetic markers four mitochondrial genes (COI, cytochrome b, 12S and 16S), and two nuclear genes (RAG-1, TMO-4C4). Ancestral state reconstruction and molecular clock dating were used to explore hypothetical ancestral distributions and area relationships, and to estimate divergent times within this group. The monophyly of the genus Neoclinus, and the reciprocal monophyly of the eastern Pacific and western Pacific lineages were supported. Available evidence, including the eastern Pacific and western Atlantic occurrence of a New World clade of blennioid fishes that includes this lineage, supports the origin of the Neocliniini in the eastern Pacific with a single divergence event to the west across the North Pacific by the ancestor of the western Pacific clade. Estimated divergence time of the eastern and western Pacific clades of Neoclinus was 24.14 million year ago, which falls during the Oligocene epoch. We employed allometric growth analysis on the chelae dimensions of P. clarkii females and males that were collected from a small pond in Yokohama, Japan. Our analysis demonstrated the existence of form I, which has larger chelae, and form II, which has smaller chelae, in P. clarkii females and highlighted the intra- and inter-sexual dimorphisms in the chelae of this species. The reproductive cycle of the population was successfully traced by the reproductive status of P. clarkii based on the occurrence patterns of each sexual morphotype; the form I crayfish occurred throughout the sampling period from April to December, while the occurrences of form I females and males were highly correlated, peaking in October. link2 Our results suggested that alternation of sexual forms occurs in P. clarkii females. The ability to discriminate between the sexual morphotypes based on chelae allometric growth would allow us to evaluate the female reproductive status more easily and precisely in invasive P. clarkii populations.Introduced freshwater fishes considerably influence the ecology and populations of native species. Previous research has revealed that introduced Zacco platypus may hybridize with chubs that are sister but distinct genera. However, we have little knowledge of Z. platypus' mate choice or its impact on Taiwanese chubs. Therefore, this study identified the interspecific mating behavior between introduced Z. platypus and native Opsariichthys evolans and evaluated the former's invasive impact on cohabitants. Our observations showed that interspecific mating pairs do occur between Z. platypus male(s) and O. evolans female(s). Fifty-three percent of spawning events were interspecific mating and only 43% were between native O. evolans mating pairs. This study showed that Z. platypus male satellites might prefer to engage with Z. platypus, while O. evolans might engage by chance. However, introduced males of Z. link3 platypus may be unable to recognize conspecific females. Meanwhile, introduced females of Z. platypus also have a mate choice preference for males of Z. platypus. Therefore, Z. platypus male hybridization might significantly reduce the successful mating ratio of O. evolans, leading to a dramatic reduction in native O. evolans offspring in the future.

Total T4 (TT4) measurement is preferred to free T4 (FT4) especially in last part of pregnancy. Guidelines by American Thyroid Association, European Thyroid Association and Endocrine Society state that TT4 increases 1.5 times pre-pregnant levels after week 16 of pregnancy. However, this is based on a small study conducted 40 years ago which used radioimmunoassay for determination in changes in TT4.

A cross-sectional study was undertaken to find reference interval for thyroid function in different trimester of pregnancy with special reference to look at the degree of elevation of TT4 as compared to non-pregnant women. Two hundred non-pregnant women (excluding oral contraceptive users) and 600 pregnant women (200 from each trimester) aged 18-40 years were consecutively recruited starting from around 6th week of pregnancy having confirmed singleton pregnancy diagnosed at 8th week by ultrasound. The exclusion criteria included (1) a personal or family history of thyroid disease; (2) presence of goiter or nodule confirmed by ultrasound; (3) anti-TPO antibody positive state (titre > 35 IU/ml).
