atherosclerosis could be a sequela of long-term activation of cell-mediated immunity as the case of latent tuberculosis infection. Atherosclerosis is the main pathological event in ischemic heart disease. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) and to detect the association between both diseases.

this cross-sectional study included 98 patients with a history of previously diagnosed ischemic heart disease who did a multi-detector computed tomography coronary angiogram (MDCTCA). Detailed clinical examination and investigations as chest X-ray and sputum examination were done for those with positive QuantiFERON-TB Gold test (QFT) to exclude active tuberculosis (TB). Participants having positive QFT results but with no evidence of active TB were considered as LTBI positive.

the prevalence of LTBI in patients with IHD was 19.3% as only nineteen of the ninety-eight patients were diagnosed with latent tuberculosis infection using the QuantiFERON serum test. Eighty-four percent (84.2%) of patients with LTBI had coronary artery atherosclerosis (CAA) compared to only 55.6% in patients without LTBI with a statistically significant difference. In multivariable analysis, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) (AOR 0.179, 95% C.I. 0.03-0.967), and LTBI (AOR 1.024, 95% C.I. 1.002-1.736) were significantly associated with coronary artery atherosclerosis (p=0.0001, and p= 0.003 respectively).

the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection among patients with ischemic heart diseases is high. Among different factors that are already well known to precipitate ischemic heart disease, latent tuberculosis should be considered.

anaemia in pregnancy is a public health concern in Burkina Faso. This study aims at identifying the factors associated with the prevalence of anaemia in pregnant women at a regional level in Burkina Faso.

we conducted a cross-sectional study in the region called "Cascades", located at the Western part of Burkina Faso. The study population included all pregnant women who attended antenatal care clinics in all public peripheral health facilities (districts) between May and June 2012 and agreed to participate in the study. They provided blood sample from which we measured the haemoglobin concentration using the Hemocue® system. The factors associated with anaemia in the study population were identified through multiple logistic regressions.

the prevalence (95% CI) of anaemia in pregnancy in the Cascades region was 58.9% (56.6% - 61.2%). Anaemia in pregnancy was more common in district of Banfora (OR = 1.40; 95% CI 1.07-1.83), among housewives (OR = 2.96; 95% CI 1.10-8.0), in the Mossi ethnic group (OR = 1.39; 95% CI 1.04-1.85) and among the wives of farmers and artisans (OR = 2.55; 95% CI 1.59-4.07). Anaemia in pregnancy was less frequent among women who drank local beer (OR = 0.68; 95% CI 0.49-0.94).

the prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy is high in Burkina Faso. Improving women's income level may contribute to reduce it. Further studies are needed to elucidate the link between the consumption of local beer, the local diet practices and anaemia in pregnant women.

In this commentary, I would like to discuss some details of ISK complicating mental retardation regarding to a published paper in The Pan African Medical Journal.

obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common chronic pulmonary disease, characterized by repetitive collapse of the upper respiratory airways, leading to oxygen desaturation. This condition is recognized to be associated with cardiovascular disease. Several studies have shown the effects of OSA on both geometry and cardiac function, with conflicting results. We aimed to investigate the relationship between echocardiographic abnormalities and the severity of OSA.

this is a cross-sectional single center study including patients, without any cardiovascular or pulmonary comorbidities, with polygraphy proven OSA. All participants underwent a detailed transthoracic echocardiography (TTE).

a total of 93 patients were included in the study, with 62.2% (n=56) females. According to the apnea hypopnea index (AHI), patients were divided into two groups mild to moderate OSA (5≤ AHI< 30/H) and severe OSA (AHI≥ 30/H). There were no differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. The assessment of echoclationship between severe OSA and right ventricular parameters (diastolic dysfunction and RVID) and sPAP.

using bidimensional echocardiography showed a relationship between severe OSA and right ventricular parameters (diastolic dysfunction and RVID) and sPAP.Gonorrhea is all diseases caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Prepubertal child is more susceptible to N. gonorrhoeae infection because the vagina is alkaline and contains no estrogen. Gonorrhea vaginitis is the most common form of gonorrhoea in prepubertal children beyond neonatal period. Transmission in child can be through sexual contact (abuse) or non-sexual contact. Gonorrhea vaginitis in children more often asymptomatic, with clinical manifestation such as mucopurulent discharge, vaginal pruritus and vulval erythema. Supporting examination comprise of gram staining from vaginal discharge, culture and nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT). Ceftriaxone is drug of choice gonorrhea without complication in children. We report a case of 4 year and 9-month female girl that was diagnosed by history taking and supporting examination from gram staining and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from vaginal discharge, and then treated with single dose ceftriaxone 125 mg intramuscular that gave clinical improvement.

the knowledge and practices on Lassa fever (LF) infection prevention and control (IPC) remains poor among health workers in Nigeria despite LF endemicity. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practices of healthcare workers at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo towards LF.

this was a cross-sectional study among 451 healthcare workers who were enrolled using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS version 23. Adequate knowledge, positive attitude, and good practice of LF infection, prevention, and control were determined by the proportion of respondents who scored >80% in each category. Descriptive statistics were done. Associations were explored using Chi-square tests.

the mean age of respondents was 37.95±8.43 years, and 169 (37.5%) were doctors. The mean overall knowledge score was 18.33±2.14, and 236 (52.3%) had appropriate knowledge, 109 (24.2%) had a positive attitude, while 351 (77.8%) demonstrated adequate preventive practices towards LFIPC. Laboratory scientists had five times the odds of appropriate knowledge of LF IPC (OR=4.886; 95%CI 1.580-15.107). Pharmacists had ten times odds of positive attitude towards LF IPC (OR=10.093; 95%CI= 1.055-95.516). Pharmacists had nine times odds of good LF IPC practices (OR=8.755; 95%CI=1.028-74.531).

disparities in knowledge, attitude, and practices of LF IPC exist among healthcare workers. To strengthen IPC, intervention strategies like training to address such gaps are needed.

Being an uncommon variant, it is often misdiagnosed as other neurological conditions resembling GBS. Although most of the cases occur as a post-infectious complication, no reports describing its development following dengue-chikungunya co-infection have been documented. A young female presented with a progressive history of swallowing difficulty, bilateral arm weakness and neck weakness. Three weeks earlier, she was presented with clinical features corresponding to dengue and was symptomatically treated. Currently, hypotonia and decreased muscle strength were observed in both upper limbs and neck. Detailed investigation revealed the presence of Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies against dengue antigen (NS 1) and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), confirming the possibility of previous dengue-chikungunya co-infection. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography of upper limbs pointed towards findings consistent with the early stages of acute motor demyelinating and possible axonal neuropathy. The detection of antiganglioside antibodies (anti-GT1a antibodies), confirmed the diagnosis of the pharyngeal-cervical-brachial variant of GBS. A five days treatment of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) along with physical rehabilitation was started which led to significant improvement and the patient was discharged after 15 days. PCB is an unfamiliar variant of GBS for many clinicians. Diagnosis can be made by a thorough history, clinical examination and investigations that can rule out other potential causes of cervicobrachial and oropharyngeal weakness. It also necessitates careful monitoring and followups after mono- and co-arboviral infections to prevent any debilitating neurological complications.

in Cameroon, data on viral hepatitis B infection in prison environments is limited. We determined the prevalence of hepatitis B infection (HBV) and correlates among prisoners incarcerated at the Douala New Bell Central Prison in Cameroon.

this was a cross-sectional study carried out in July 2018 and included 940 randomly selected prisoners. Data were collected using pre-tested questionnaire while blood screening for HBV surface antigen (HBs Ag) used rapid test, with confirmation via Elisa test. Sociodemographic characteristics and risk factors were compared among the three age groups with respect to the prison's partitioning. Factors associated with positive HBs Ag were identified using logistic regression adjusted to age and gender. Confounders were then excluded by logistic multivariate analysis. All p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

of the 940 prisoners selected, 94% were male. The mean age of the study population was 33.81 ± 10.35 years. The median duration of incarceration and median number of incarcerations were 12 months (IQR 5-36) and 1 (IQR 1-2) respectively.
