Common reasons for evaluation were bloody vaginal discharge or hematuria and abdominal straining. Adenocarcinoma (13/42 [31%]), leiomyoma (13 [31%]), and leiomyosarcoma (11 [26%]) were the most common tumors. Does with distant metastasis had greater odds of a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma (OR, 40.5) than does without distant metastasis. In the analysis adjusted for hemorrhagic discharge, odds of euthanasia for does with straining were 13 times those for does without straining. In the analysis adjusted for straining status, does with hemorrhagic discharge had almost 7 times the odds of euthanasia for does without this finding. The survival-to-discharge rate was low (13/42 [31%]). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE The frequency of adenocarcinomas in the study sample was unexpectedly high. Further research is needed to confirm the study findings.OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical and clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment, and outcome for cattle that developed a retroperitoneal abscess (RA) following paralumbar fossa laparotomy (PFL). ANIMALS 32 Holstein cows with RA. PROCEDURES The record database of a veterinary teaching hospital was searched to identify cattle that were treated for an RA between January 1995 and March 2017. Cattle with an RA > 30 cm in diameter located 3.5 cm subjacent to the skin that had undergone a PFL less then 3 months before examination for the RA were evaluated. Information extracted from the record of each cow included signalment; physical examination, clinicopathologic, and transabdominal ultrasonographic findings; treatments administered; and outcome. Milk production data were analyzed for the lactations before, during, and after RA treatment. RESULTS Common physical examination findings were rumen hypomotility, anorexia, and fever, and common clinicopathologic findings were anemia and neutrophilia. Abdominal palpation per rectum and transabdominal ultrasonography facilitated RA diagnosis and identification of the optimal location for drainage. selleck kinase inhibitor Thirty of 32 cows underwent surgical drainage of the RA and prolonged administration of systemic antimicrobials. Two cows were euthanized because of concurrent peritonitis, including 1 that underwent surgical RA drainage. Thirty cows were discharged from the hospital alive, and most returned to their previous level of milk production. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Although uncommon, RA should be suspected in cows that develop anorexia and fever within 3 months after PFL. Cows with RA often returned to their previous level of milk production, but treatment was generally prolonged and costly.Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809-1894) was a Boston physician, a professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School, and a writer of prose and poetry for general audiences. He was also one of the most famous American wits of the nineteenth century and a celebrity not bashful about exposing costly, absurd, and potentially harmful medical fads. One of his targets was phrenology, and the current article examines how he learned about phrenology during the 1830s as a medical student in Boston and Paris, and his head-reading with Lorenzo Fowler in 1858. It then turns to what he told readers of the Atlantic Monthly (in 1859) and Harvard medical students (in 1861) about phrenology being a pseudoscience and how phrenologists were duping clients. By looking at what Holmes was stating about cranioscopy and practitioners of phrenology in both humorous and more serious ways, historians can more fully appreciate the "bumpy" trajectory of one of the most significant medical and scientific fads of the nineteenth century. We investigated the cognitive mechanisms underlying change in implicit cognitions following exposure to alcohol portrayals. More precisely, we tested in an experimental study whether this change depends on controlled or automatic processes by putting participants in a state of self-regulatory fatigue prior to being exposed to alcohol portrayals. Ninety participants were randomly assigned to a 2 (attitude measure before vs after) × 2 (alcohol portrayal yes vs no) × 2 (ego depletion yes vs no) mixed design to assess whether the effects of alcohol portrayals affected cognitive resources. It was hypothesized that alcohol portrayals would have more of an impact on participants submitted to an ego-depletion task. We found a change in attitudes toward alcohol only for participants that had been exposed to alcohol portrayals, and who had not been cognitively depleted. These results suggest that these changes rely on controlled, resource-dependent processes rather than on purely associative and automatic processes. Implications regarding alcohol advertising effects on public health are discussed. Background Psychiatric conditions are relatively common during pregnancy, and many of these conditions are treated with psychotropic medications. In this article, we aim to quantify the rate of pregnancy-related exposures and describe how psychotropic medications are being used in pregnancy. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all pregnancies ending in a live birth in the Canadian province of British Columbia between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2010. We examined antipsychotic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, and stimulants use during pregnancy. We describe use of these medications across the pregnancy period, in terms of incident and prevalent use in pregnancy and whether women had corresponding diagnoses for mental health conditions. Results We included 424,307 pregnancies, of whom 7.1% were dispensed a psychotropic medication. The most commonly used psychotropic medications were antidepressants (4.2%) followed by anxiolytics (3.4%). Among psychotropic medication users, the most commonly associated psychiatric diagnosis was major depressive disorder (43.2%) followed by anxiety (15.8%) and adjustment reaction and/or acute stress (15.8%). The majority of antidepressant use was prevalent (continued from preconception period), whereas most anxiolytic use was incident (no prescriptions in the 6 months before conception). Conclusions The relatively high rate of use of psychotropic drugs in this cohort, and the existence of effective alternative treatments for the commonly treated conditions suggests a need to improve access to nondrug options before and during pregnancy. The finding that fewer women are discontinuing their antidepressants during pregnancy should be further investigated.Anxiety disorders appear to involve distinct neurobiological mechanisms and several medications are available against this mental health problem. However, pharmacological therapeutic approaches display undesirable side effects for patients, particularly when long-term therapy is required. Some evidences have suggested that Coriandrum sativum extract (CSE) provide sedative and anxiolytic effects. We investigate if CSE could attenuate anxiety-like behaviors induced by novelty and alarm substance exposures in zebrafish. Adult zebrafish were injected with vehicle, clonazepam, or CSE (25, 50 or 100 mg/kg) and submitted to novel tank test. At the end, saline or alarm substance was added and anxiety-like responses were recorded. Twenty-four hours after, fish were submitted to the light/dark test. Novelty associated with alarm substance exposure decreased distance traveled and total time mobile in novel tank, and CSE (at 50 and 100 mg/kg) prevented these alterations similarly to clonazepam. Alarm substance reduced the time spent in white compartment (p = 0.0193 as compared with vehicle group). Clonazepam and CSE prevented this anxiogenic effect of alarm substance. CSE presents anxiolytic effects against alarm substance-induced locomotor and anxiogenic responses similarly to clonazepam. These data corroborate with the use of this plant in traditional medicine and provides a putative new pharmacological intervention for anxiety disorders.Introduction Provider counseling may influence women's postpartum family planning decisions. Materials and Methods We conducted an anonymous Internet-based cross-sectional survey of postpartum women regarding multiple topics, including prenatal/postpartum care and family planning. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine associations between quantity of provider counseling (indexed as number of family planning topics discussed with a health care provider) and women's decisions regarding contraception and pregnancy spacing. Results From January to May 2016, 2,850 women completed the survey and met inclusion criteria. Among this group, the majority were white (93%), ≥30 years (63%), and had obtained a college degree or higher (74%). Approximately half (49%) desired an interpregnancy interval (IPI) >2 years, and the minority (21%) used a highly effective contraceptive method (defined as long-acting reversible contraception or sterilization). The majority of women (56%) had received counseling on three to six family planning topics (defined as "more counseling" in regression models). Women who received more counseling were more likely to use a highly effective contraceptive method (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 1.33, confidence interval [95% CI] 1.09-1.62) but were not more likely to desire an IPI >2 years (AOR 0.96, 95% CI 0.81-1.14). Desired IPI modified the association between provider counseling and contraception (p = 0.06 for interaction) Among those desiring an IPI >2 years, more counseling was associated with use of a highly effective contraceptive method (AOR 1.58, 95% CI 1.23-2.03), but this was not observed among those desiring a shorter IPI (AOR 1.05, 95% CI 0.73-1.49). Conclusions Contraceptive decisions depend on both provider counseling and patient goals.Spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) causes the skin hemorrhagic disease in cyprinid species, but its molecular mechanism of skin immune response remains unclear at the protein level. In the present study, the differential proteomics of the zebrafish (Danio rerio) skin in response to SVCV infection were examined by isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays. A total of 3999 proteins were identified, of which 320 and 181 proteins were differentially expressed at 24 and 96 h postinfection, respectively. The expression levels of 16 selected immune-related differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were confirmed by qPCR analysis. Furthermore, Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses revealed that DEPs were significantly associated with complement, inflammation, and antiviral response. The protein-protein interaction network of cytoskeleton-associated proteins, ATPase-related proteins, and parvalbumins from DEPs was shown to be involved in skin immune response. This is first report on the skin proteome profiling of zebrafish against SVCV infection, which will contribute to understand the molecular mechanism of local mucosal immunity in fish.Recurrent cardiovascular events remain an enigma that accounts for >30% of deaths worldwide. While heredity and human genetics variation play a key role, host-environment interactions offer a sound conceptual framework to dissect the molecular basis of recurrent cardiovascular events from genes and proteins to metabolites, thus accounting for environmental contributions as well. We report here a multiomics systems science approach so as to map interindividual variability in susceptibility to recurrent cardiovascular events. First, we performed data and text mining through a mixed-methods content analysis to select genomic variants, 10 single nucleotide polymorphisms, and microRNAs (miR-10a, miR-21, and miR-20a), minimizing bias in candidate marker selection. Next, we validated our in silico data in a patient cohort suffering from recurrent cardiovascular events (a cross-sectional study design and sampling). Our findings report a key role in low-density lipoprotein clearance for rs11206510 (p  less then  0.01) and rs515135 (p  less then  0.
