The fast-growing literature on the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in fixed-bed design reflects the rapid development of this subfield of reactor modeling. We identify recent trends and research directions in which successful methodology has been established, for example, in computer generation of packings of complex particles, and where more work is needed, for example, in the meshing of nonsphere packings and the simulation of industrial-size packed tubes. Development of fixed-bed reactor models, by either using CFD directly or obtaining insight, closures, and parameters for engineering models from simulations, will increase confidence in using these methods for design along with, or instead of, expensive pilot-scale experiments. I describe my family, my early education, my college and graduate school training in physics, my postdoc years in chemistry, and my subsequent transformation into a chemical engineering faculty member-one of the first women to be appointed to a chemical engineering faculty in the United States. I focus on the events that shaped me, the people who noticed and supported me, and the environment for women scientists and engineers in what some would call the "early days." My initial research activities centered on applications of statistical mechanics to predict phase equilibria in simple systems. Over time, my interests evolved to focus on applying molecule-level computer simulations to systems of interest to chemical engineers, e.g., hydrocarbons and polymers. Eventually, spurred on by my personal interest in amyloid diseases and my wish to make a contribution to human health, I turned to more biologically oriented problems having to do with protein aggregation and protein design. I give a candid assessment of my strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures. Finally, I share the most valuable lessons that I have learned over a lifetime of professional and personal experience. These microorganisms are able to accomplish this feat by enhancing the activity of the CO2-fixing enzyme Rubisco using biophysical CO2 concentrating mechanisms (CCMs). Biophysical CCMs operate by concentrating bicarbonate and converting it into CO2 in a compartment that houses Rubisco (in contrast with other CCMs that concentrate CO2 via an organic intermediate, such as malate in the case of C4 CCMs). This activity provides Rubisco with a high concentration of its substrate, thereby increasing its reaction rate. The genetic engineering of a biophysical CCM into land plants is being pursued as a strategy to increase crop yields. This review focuses on the progress toward understanding the molecular components of cyanobacterial and algal CCMs, as well as recent advances toward engineering these components into land plants. Additionally, the study investigates the association between physical activity and self-rated health while adjusting for various covariates at the individual, household, and district levels in Seoul, South Korea. A cross-sectional study of the 2009 Seoul Welfare Panel Study conducted by Seoul Welfare Foundation was utilized. The final sample included 7,761 individuals within 3,617 households in 25 administrative areas. Three-level random intercept logistic models were fitted. The results showed that a small proportion (3.52%) of variance in self-rated health was attributed to the administrative-area level, while a relatively large proportion (33.78%) was attributed to the household level. This study also found a positive association between physical activity and self-rated health, even after controlling for covariates at multiple levels. The results indicated that public health interventions promoting physical activity may have a beneficial effect on individual health. Additionally, public health interventions for improving individual health may not be efficient if directed only at the administrative-area level, as only a small portion of variance in self-rated health was attributable to this level.OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of hypnic headache. BACKGROUND The exact prevalence of hypnic headache is unknown since there are no published population-based prevalence studies. METHODS This study was a pilot for the SAGA cohort study, a population-based study on life stressors and various indices of health. this website Of 1398 invited adults, 921 (66%) participated; 402 men (average age 45.6 years, SD 13.2) and 519 women (52.6 years, SD 11.1). Subjects answered a headache questionnaire including a screening question for hypnic headache. "Do you have a headache that occurs only during sleep and causes wakening?". Diagnosis of hypnic headache was made by clinical interview using ICHD-3 criteria. RESULTS Among 921 participants, six screened positive for hypnic headache, of those two 0.22% (95% CI 0.06-0.79%) had probable hypnic headache and none had definite hypnic headache. CONCLUSION Confirming that hypnic headache is rare, these data suggest a 0.22% prevalence of probable hypnic headache.
