The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients undergoing open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO). Patients from August 2018 to May 2020 were retrospectively studied. Clinical data were obtained including gender, age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, history of aspirin, prepostoperative hematocrit (Hct) and hemoglobin (Hb), thrombotic events, blood transfusion requirement, hospital length of stay, size of osteotomy gap, and wound complications such as wound hematoma and infection. 52 patients were enrolled in the tranexamic acid group (TA group), and 48 patients were enrolled in the nontranexamic acid group (NTA group); there were no significant differences between both groups in terms of gender, age, BMI, preoperative Hb, size of osteotomy gap, incidence of smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, history of aspirin, thrombotic events, blood transfusion requirement, and wound hematoma and infection. The mean hospital length of stay was 9.4 ± 1.0 days in the TA group and 11.0 ± 1.2 days in the NTA group (P less then 0.001), the blood loss was 296.0 ± 128.7 ml in the TA group and 383.3 ± 181.3 ml in the NTA group (P less then 0.05), and the postoperative Hb level was 120.8 ± 15.0 g/l in the TA group and 109.5 ± 13.8 g/l in the NTA group (P less then 0.001). In conclusion, the administration of TXA is beneficial to patients undergoing OWHTO via decreasing hospital length of stay, reducing blood loss, and maintaining higher postoperative Hb levels.
Hemangiopericytomas are rare tumors derived from pericytes surrounding the blood vessels. The clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of hemangiopericytoma patients remain mostly unknown. In this retrospective cohort study, we assessed the clinicopathological characteristics of hemangiopericytoma patients, as well as the clinical usefulness of different treatment modalities.
. We collected the clinicopathological data (between 1975 and 2016) of hemangiopericytoma and hemangioendothelioma patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Incidence, treatment, and patient prognosis were assessed.
Data from 1474 patients were analyzed in our study cohort (hemangiopericytoma
= 1243; hemangioendothelioma
= 231). The incidence of hemangiopericytoma in 2016 was 0.060 per 100,000 individuals. The overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) did not differ between patients with hemangioendothelioma and those with hemangiopericytoma (
= 0.721,
= 0.544). Surgery was the only effective treatment that provided survival benefits in hemangiopericytoma patients, while the clinical usefulness of adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy was limited.Dengue is the world's rapidly transmitting mosquito-borne viral disease. It is mostly found in subtropical countries in the world. The annual number of global deaths caused by dengue fever is about 25,000. The Sri Lanka dengue situation is also not different to other countries. In the year 2019, dengue fever caused 120 deaths in Sri Lanka. Most of these deaths were reported from the main administrative district Colombo. Health authorities have to pay their attention to control this new situation. Therefore, identifying the hot spots in the country and implementing necessary actions to control the disease is an important task. This study aims to develop a clustering technique to identify the dengue hot spots in Sri Lanka. Suitable risk factors are identified using expert ideas and reviewing available literature. The weights are derived using Chang's extent method. selleck inhibitor These weights are used to prioritize the factors associated with dengue. Using the geometric mean, the interaction between the triggering variable and other variables is calculated. According to the interaction matrices, five dengue risk clusters are identified. It is found that high population movement in the area plays a dominant role to transmit the disease to other areas. Most of the districts in Sri Lanka will reach to moderate risk cluster in the year 2022.Ribosome biogenesis regulatory protein homolog (RRS1) is a protein required for ribosome biogenesis. Recent studies have identified an oncogenic role of RRS1 in some cancers, whereas the involvement of RRS1 in retinoblastoma (RB) remains to be determined. In this study, we aimed to explore the role of RRS1 in RB. We found that the expression of RRS1 was increased in RB tissues and cells. Lentivirus-mediated RRS1 overexpression promoted the proliferation, growth, and invasion of RB cells. Opposite results were found in RRS1 knockdown cells. In addition, RRS1 silencing induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase and apoptosis in RB cells, while RRS1 ectopic expression exhibited the opposite effect. At the molecular level, RRS1 activated the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, inhibition of which largely blunted the proliferation, growth, and invasion of RB cells. Our study suggests that RRS1 functions as an oncogene in RB through activating the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of lactic acid (LA), acetic acid, (AA) and trisodium phosphate (TSP) spray on the microbiological population of beef carcass surfaces slaughtered in a traditional abattoir in Zagazig, Egypt. Higher microbial populations were determined on the shoulder than on the thigh surfaces, and meat sampling by tissue excision technique yielded significantly higher (P less then 0.01) microbial count than swabbing method. The application of LA (2%), AA (2%), and TSP (12%) sprays for 30 seconds significantly (P less then 0.01) reduced the microbial population counts on the beef surfaces by 0.9 to 2.2 logs. A complete inhibition of enterococci growth was achieved by LA and AA sprays. In general, LA and AA sprays were more efficient as antimicrobial agents than the TSP spray. Among the studied organisms, enterococci were the most reducible bacteria by LA and AA, followed by Enterobacteriaceae and coliforms, while Staphylococcus aureus being the least. This study also indicated that microbial populations determined on the shoulder were higher than on the thigh surfaces, and meat sampling by tissue excision technique yielded significantly higher (P less then 0.
