The intestinal microbiome represents a complex network of microbes that are important for human health and preventing pathogen invasion. Studies that examine differences in intestinal microbial communities across individuals with and without enteric infections are useful for identifying microbes that support or impede intestinal health.

16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted on stool DNA from patients with enteric infections (n = 200) and 75 healthy family members to identify differences in intestinal community composition. Stools from 13 patients were also examined post-infection to better understand how intestinal communities recover. Patient communities had lower species richness, evenness, and diversity versus uninfected communities, while principle coordinate analysis demonstrated close clustering of uninfected communities, but not the patient communities, irrespective of age, gender, and race. Differences in community composition between patients and family members were mostly due to variation in the abundance of phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes. Patient communities had significantly more Proteobacteria representing genus Escherichia relative to uninfected communities, which were dominated by Bacteroides. Intestinal communities from patients with bloody diarrhea clustered together in the neighbor-joining phylogeny, while communities from 13 patients' post-infection had a significant increase in Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes and clustered together with uninfected communities.

These data demonstrate that the intestinal communities in patients with enteric bacterial infections get altered in similar ways. Furthermore, preventing an increase in Escherichia abundance may be an important consideration for future prevention strategies.

Since SARS epidemic in 2003, Hong Kong has experienced several major epidemic risks, but how general community might react to the repeated infectious diseases health risks have not been studied. In 2013, imported human H7N9 influenza infected cases from China were reported. Our study aims to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) concerning A/H7N9 among Hong Kong general population regarding pandemic preparedness in early 2014.

A cross-sectional, population-based telephone survey study was conducted among the Cantonese-speaking population aged over 15 years in Hong Kong in February 2014. The study survey was composed of 78 KAP questions. Factors associated with individual and household pandemic preparedness were analyzed.

Final study sample was 1,020 with a response rate of 45.9 %. Among the respondents, most of them believed personal hygiene and avoidance of avian contacts were effective in preventing H7N9 infections. The majority of respondents had satisfactory hand hygiene practices and avas gaps between perceived usefulness and practice of preventive measures towards influenza outbreaks. Educational campaigns and framing the issue to increase public and media awareness are crucial in preventing the current public fatigue towards outbreaks.

Urban malaria is now considered a major emerging health problem in Africa and urban insecticide resistance may represent a serious threat to the ambitious programme of further scaling-up coverage with long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor residual spray. This study evaluates the levels and mechanisms of insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae populations in 44 urban areas of Dakar in a longitudinal entomological surveillance study.

Adult mosquitoes sampled by night-landing catches at 44 sites across Dakar from 2007 to 2010 were genotyped to assess the frequency and distribution of resistance alleles. To determine the association between Mullerian anomalies (MuAs) and short-term perinatal outcome.

A retrospective cohort study, comparing pregnancy outcome in women with and without MuAs matched by age, number of fetuses and parity in a 12 ratio.

Among 243 women with MuAs, 156 (64.2%) had bicornuate uterus, 38 (15.6%) had septate uterus, 27 (11.1%) had unicornuate uterus and 22 (9.1%) had didelphic uterus. Compared to controls (n = 486), women with MuAs had higher rates of previous preterm deliveries (PTDs) (20.2 versus 5.9%, p < 0.001) and previous cesarean section (CS) (50.6% versus 12.5%, p < 0.001). Women with MuAs had higher rates of PTDs <37 weeks (25.1% versus 6.1%, p < 0.001) and <32 weeks (4.1% versus 0.6%, p = 0.001), preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) (12.8% versus 2.7%, p < 0.001) and small for gestational age (SGA) infants (12.3 versus 6.8%, p = 0.01). Three groups of children were followed across three time points from 2 to 8 years of age autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, and typical development. At each time point, parents filled out questionnaires regarding their child's sensory symptoms and adaptive functioning. At the initial time point, parents of children with autism spectrum disorder reported more sensory symptoms in their children than parents in the typical development group. Parents in the autism spectrum disorder group reported more sensory symptoms than parents in the developmental delay group within smell, taste, and auditory domains. While the typical development group decreased in reported sensory symptoms across the study period, the clinical groups demonstrated no significant change across assessment points. Sensory symptoms for all groups were not independently predictive of adaptive functioning when verbal mental age was also included in the model.
