Rhabdomyolysis is a medical emergency characterized by acute skeletal muscle breakdown with a sudden rise and subsequent fall of serum creatine kinase (CK) levels. Rhabdomyolysis events are provoked by exposure to external triggers, possibly in combination with an increased genetic susceptibility. We aimed to describe comprehensively the external triggers and potentially pathogenic genetic variants possibly implicated in increased rhabdomyolysis susceptibility.
We performed a retrospective single-center study, including a total of 1302 patients with an acute CK level exceeding 2000IU/l.
Anoxia was the most frequently reported trigger (40%). A subset of 193 patients were clinically suspected of an underlying genetic disorder (recurrent episodes, a positive family history, very high or persistently increased CK levels). In 72 of these patients, an unequivocal genetic defect was identified. A total of 22 genes with pathogenic variants were identified, including 52 different variants. Of those, 11 genes have been previously associated with rhabdomyolysis (ACADVL, ANO5, CPT2, DMD, DYSF, FKRP, HADHA, PGM1, LPIN1, PYGM, RYR1). Eleven genes are probably implicated in increased susceptibility (including AGL, CAPN3, CNBP, DMPK, MAGT1, ACADM, SCN4A, SGCA, SGCG, SMPD1, TANGO2).

Here, we report that Gly-Pro-Ala (GPA) peptide isolated from fish skin gelatin hydrolysate can significantly alleviate intestinal inflammation and damage caused by DSS-induced mice colitis. Besides maintaining the intestinal epithelial barrier, GPA alleviates intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress by inhibiting NF-κB activation. Interestingly, GPA binds to the ligand-binding domain of Nur77 and stimulates its autotranscriptional activity to enhance its expression in intestinal epithelial cells. Furthermore, GPA activates the promoter of IκBα to increase its expression, resulting in the abolishment of the NF-κB pathway. The aim of this study was to examine the cooccurrence of heightened media attention after the publication of a paper by Skovlund et al in September 2016 on the link between hormonal contraception and depression or mood on adverse drug reaction (ADR) reports in the UK.
A quantitative analysis of relevant newspaper articles published between January 2014 and December 2017 was performed, as well as a content analysis. ADR reports were collected from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency website and via a Freedom of Information request. Although several pharmacological solutions are available to alleviate symptoms of schizophrenia, they do not seem to provide solution for accompanying social dysfunctions. To handle this unmet clinical need, many innovative interventions have been developed recently. Considering the promising results on this field and the development trend, characterized by the growing proportion of included interactive technology, our research team developed a novel virtual reality (VR)-based targeted theory of mind (ToM) intervention (VR-ToMIS) for stable outpatients with schizophrenia. VR-ToMIS is a nine-session long structured and individualized method that uses cognitive and behavioural therapeutic techniques in an immersive VR environment. Our study was a randomized, controlled pilot study. Twenty-one patients have been recruited and randomly allocated to either VR-ToMIS or passive VR condition. Patients assigned to passive VR condition could use the same VR software as the VR-ToMIS group, but without any interventions. Effects on psychiatric symptoms, neurocognitive and social cognitive functions, pragmatic language skills and quality of life were evaluated by using analysis of covariance. According to our results, VR-ToMIS was associated with improvements in negative symptoms, in one neurocognitive field (immediate memory), ToM and pragmatic language skills, but no significant change in quality of life scores was detected. Significant changes in VR-ToMIS group were associated with moderate to large therapeutic effects (ηp2 = .24-.46, φ = .55-.67). On the background of the presented pilot results, VR-ToMIS is concluded to be feasible and tolerable.
