The flipped classroom learning method enabled students to achieve better results on the final exam, with a statistically significant difference compared to traditional classroom learning. Student responses to the satisfaction questionnaire showed an increase in motivation and interest in the lessons and correspond to the increase in exam success.

The use of the flipped classroom for lower cognitive-level activities is more appreciated by students and yields better results than knowledge acquisition in the traditional classroom.

We investigated microbial communities within an active lava-induced hydrothermal system associated with the 2014-2015 eruption of Holuhraun in Iceland as a Mars analogue. In 2016, the microbial composition in the lava-heated water differed substantially from that of the glacial river and spring water sources that fed into the system. Several taxonomic and metabolic groups were confined to the water emerging from the lava and some showed the highest sequence similarities to subsurface ecosystems, including to the predicted thermophilic and deeply branching Candidatus Acetothermum autotrophicum. Measurements show that the communities were affected by temperature and other environmental factors. In particular, comparing glacial river water incubated in situ (5.7°C, control) with glacial water incubated within a lava-heated stream (17.5°C, warm) showed that microbial abundance, richness, and diversity increased in the warm treatment compared with the control, with the predicted major metabolism shifting from lithotrophy toward organotrophy and possibly phototrophy. In addition, thermophilic bacteria isolated from the lava-heated water and a nearby acidic hydrothermal system included the known endospore-formers Geobacillus stearothermophilus and Paenibacillus cisolokensis as well as a potentially novel taxon within the order Hyphomicrobiales. Similar lava-water interactions on Mars could therefore have generated habitable environments for microbial communities. The light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) trimer in plants functions as a major antenna complex and a quencher to protect it from photooxidative damage. Theoretical studies on the structure of an LHCII trimer have demonstrated that excitation energy transfer between chlorophylls (Chls) in LHCII can be modulated by its exquisite conformational fluctuation. However, conformational changes depending on its binding location have not yet been investigated, even though reorganization of protein complexes occurs by physiological regulations. In this study, we investigated conformational differences in LHCII by comparing published structures of an identical LHCII trimer in the three different photosystem supercomplexes from the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Our results revealed distinct differences in Chl configurations as well as polypeptide conformations of the LHCII trimers depending on its binding location. We propose that these configurational differences readily modulate the function of LHCII and possibly lead to a change in excitation-energy flow over the photosynthetic supercomplex.Flavor perception is a key factor in the acceptance or rejection of food. Aroma precursors such as cysteine conjugates are present in various plant-based foods and are metabolized into odorant thiols in the oral cavity. To date, the involved enzymes are unknown, despite previous studies pointing out the likely involvement of carbon-sulfur lyases (C-S lyases) from the oral microbiota. In this study, we show that saliva metabolizes allyl-cysteine into odorant thiol metabolites, with evidence suggesting that microbial pyridoxal phosphate-dependent C-S lyases are involved in the enzymatic process. A phylogenetic analysis of PatB C-S lyase sequences in four oral subspecies of Fusobacterium nucleatum was carried out and led to the identification of several putative targets. FnaPatB1 from F. nucleatum subspecies animalis, a putative C-S lyase, was characterized and showed high activity with a range of cysteine conjugates. Enzymatic and X-ray crystallographic data showed that FnaPatB1 metabolizes cysteine derivatives within a unique active site environment that enables the formation of flavor sulfur compounds. Using an enzymatic screen with a library of pure compounds, we identified several inhibitors able to reduce the C-S lyase activity of FnaPatB1 in vitro, which paves the way for controlling the release of odorant sulfur compounds from their cysteine precursors in the oral cavity.

The simultaneous implantation of the Bonebridge (MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria), asemi-implantable active transcutaneous bone conduction hearing device and anchors for auricular prostheses can be challenging as both implants contain magnets and compete for the narrow space in the designated implantation area.

Apreoperative planning tool (virtual surgery) was used with individual 3D computer models of the skull and implants for finding optimal implant positions for both the floating mass transducer (FMT) and the anchors for the auricular prosthesis. The interaction between the magnetic prosthesis anchors and the FMT was measured by means of static magnetic forces. check details A retrospective data analysis was conducted to evaluate the surgical and audiological outcome.

Between 2014 and 2021 a3D planning of a simultaneous implantation of the Bonebridge with auricular prosthesis anchors was conducted on 6 ears of 5 patients (3males, 2females; age range 17-56years). The individual preoperative planning was considered very useful for the optimal placement of bone anchors in combination with the Bonebridge. Audiological data showed aclear benefit for hearing 3months and > 11months after implantation. No adverse interactions between the magnetic prosthesis anchors and the FMT were observed. In two patients, revision surgery was carried out due to skin inflammation or wound healing problems. No long-term complications were observed 3-5 years after surgery.

Preoperative 3D planning represents a clear benefit for the simultaneous audiological and esthetic rehabilitation using the Bonebridge and anchors for auricular prostheses.

Tinnitus and vertigo have been studied in many ways. This led to avariety of explanations from multiple medical disciplines. The musculature of the jaw and cervical spine have also been researched in this regard. Dysfunctional musculature can trigger tinnitus and dizziness. This subtype of tinnitus is called cervicogenic somatosensory tinnitus.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of manual therapy on subject-reported, individually perceived impairment due to cervicogenic somatosensory tinnitus (Tinnitus Handicap Inventory), dizziness (Dizziness Handicap Inventory), and hypertonia of the musculature of the head and cervical spine.

In aprospective randomized trial, 80patients (40in the intervention group/40in the control group) were medically examined and interviewed. Afterwards, they received targeted manual therapy.

After manual therapy, there were significant differences in the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, Dizziness Handicap Inventory, and muscular hypertonia between the groups, all in favor of the intervention group.

Manual examination and therapy proved to be effective. It should be increasingly applied in the absence of ENT pathology and suspected cervicogenic somatosensory tinnitus. The role of individual muscles requires further investigation.

Neonatal sepsis may be divided into two types early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS) and late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS). Gram-posi- tive microorganisms are the etiological agents in 62% of EOS, and in 43% of the total the identified microorganism is GBS. Gram-negative microorganisms comprise 37% of the etiological agents of EOS, of which 29% are caused by Escherichia coli. ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae represent a major worldwide threat among drug-resistant bacteria in both hospital and community settings. ESBLs are often located on large plasmids that also harbour genes resistant to other antimicrobial classes, resulting in multidrug-resistant isolates. Plasmid-encoded ESBLs of the CTX-M-type are increasingly reported worldwide in Gram-negative rods and now account for most of the ESBLs found in Enterobacteriaceae. We present one case of EOS by Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) and ESBL producing E. coli (CTX-M gene) in a neonate born to a mother recently immigrated from Africa. Maternal blood culture grew the same bacteria.A critical point in dentistry is the empiric prescription of broad-spectrum antibiotics that could increase the levels of antimicrobial resistance. Alveolar osteitis is one of the most common post-op- erative complications in which antibiotic use is controversial. A 35-year-old female, with pain in the right mandibular region and treated with cefixime, was diagnosed with cracked tooth syndrome and pulpitis. The tooth was extracted and a massive purulent bleeding drainage was observed. Irrigation of the socket and a new therapy with azithromycin were done. Bacteriological analysis, a specific mecA gene PCR for the methicillin resistance, and the antimicrobial susceptibility test were per- formed on the bacterial isolate. A Staphylococcus epidermidis isolate was methicillin-resistant and showed resistance to erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, and sulfamethoxazole + trimeth- oprim. After 7 days, intraoral examination showed a complete resolution. The aim of this report is to suggest that systemic antibiotics may provide insufficient efficacy during alveolar osteitis, especially when caused by a multidrug-resistant organism.Patients with severe COVID-19 both seroconvert earlier and develop higher concentrations of SARS- CoV-2-specific IgG than patients with mild symptoms. In this retrospective study we considered different categories of patients defined as "vulnerable" because affected by other pathologies, such as patients with genetic and cardiovascular diseases; patients with autoimmune dermatological dis- ease; kidney and lung transplant patients, and pregnant women because the prevalence of Covid-19 infection during pregnancy is not known. This study was performed at IRCCS San Matteo Hospital in Pavia, North Italy, a zone considered at high risk during the COVID-19 pandemic from June to December 2020. None of the positive screened patients had symptoms of COVID-19 infection at the time of inclusion in this study.
