Addtionally, medical treatment and the owner-pet-relationship may increase the risk for obesity. In order to treat obesity in a qualified manner or ideally to prevent this from developing in the first place, a profound knowledge concerning the underlying causes is essential. The present article provides a review of the most important impact factors thus adding to the body of information allowing for the acquisition of such expertise.
In humans, misdiagnoses of monoclonal gammopathy after use of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies has been documented. This triggers concerns for similar misdiagnoses in animals treated with monoclonal antibodies. The aim of this study was to evaluate if lokivetmab interferes with serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis in dogs.
Residual sera from 25 client-owned, healthy blood donor dogs from 2 veterinary hospitals in Germany were used. The residual sera were analysed with serum protein electrophoresis and immunofixation electrophoresis before and after being spiked with lokivetmab at a concentration of 10 µg/ml (corresponding to the mean peak serum concentration after a subcutaneous injection of 2 mg/kg lokivetmab).
No monoclonal gammopathy was observed on serum protein electrophoresis and all proteins had a normal distribution pattern without any pathologic bands on immunofixation electrophoresis. The absolute γ-globulin values of spiked samples, however, were significantly higher than in the native sera although they remained within the reference interval. Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a common skin disease in dogs. Prior studies were able to determine beneficial effects of essential fatty acids (EFA) on the clinical signs of CAD. The aim of this study was set to evaluate the effects of a newly designed, EFA-enriched diet on the clinical signs of CAD compared to another EFA-enriched diet.
In this prospective, randomized, double-blinded study, 31 privately owned dogs with atopic dermatitis received either the control diet (diet A, Hill's Prescription Diet™ d/d™ Salmon & Rice, n = 17) or the test diet (diet B, Veterinary HPM™ Dermatology Support D1, Virbac, n = 14) for 12 weeks. At the beginning of the study as well as after 4, 8 and 12 weeks, skin lesions and pruritus were evaluated via validated scores and the administered medication was documented. At the same time, the dogs' coat quality was evaluated via a distinct scoring system. In both groups, a total of 7 dogs each completed the entire study.
After 12 weeks, there was a mild improvement in lesion scores, pruritus and coat quality with both diets.

Nutritional assessment of commercial vegan complete diets for adult cats and dogs and the evaluation of the products' legal labelling.
Four complete vegan diets for adult cats and dogs available on the German market were analyzed concerning their nutrient and mineral content. The required amount of food was determined by calculation and compared to the manufacturers' feeding recommendation. Data labelling was assessed for its accordance with EC regulation 767/2009. The supply of taurine and vitamins was evaluated for its adequacy by use of the nutritional additive data on the product label.
In most cases, the labelled data complied with the regulatory framework. The manufacturers' feeding recommendation differed significantly from the calculated feed quantity in 2 out of 4 feeds. The recommendations resulted in a coverage of 64 to 121 % of the total energy requirement, more frequently leading to an underestimation of the required feed amount. The supply of minerals exceeded the recommended allowance by energy and nutrient requirements for a complete diet for adult dogs and cats without limitations. Therefore, deficiencies in the supply of individual nutrients cannot be ruled out under long-term feeding of the examined vegan diets.

In the tested compound food, the amount of phosphorus in relation to the recommended daily allowance ranged from 90 to 740 %. More than 90 % of the products supplied twice the required amounts; in 6 dog feeds the nutritional maximum wasexceeded. The myocardial performance index (MPI) has been proposed to evaluate cardiac dysfunction in newborns from diabetic mothers. Although MPI is routinely assessed in newborns, its role in the evaluation of fetuses from women with hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) is still under evaluation. We aimed to evaluate the differences in third trimester fetal MPI in pregnant women with hyperglycemia compared to healthy controls.
Seven electronic databases were searched for all studies assessing women with HIP who underwent evaluation of fetal left MPI during pregnancy compared to a control group. The summary measures were reported as mean differences (MD) in the mean fetal left MPI between women with HIP and healthy controls, with a 95 % confidence interval (CI). A post hoc subgroup analysis based on the type of HIP - pregestational diabetes, GDM, or gestational impaired glucose tolerance (GIGT) - was performed as an additional analysis.
14 studies assessing 1326 fetuses (580 from women with HIP and 746 from controls) were included. Women with HIP had a significantly higher mean left fetal MPI compared to controls (MD 0.08; 95 %CI 0.05 to 0.11; p < 0.00 001). Subgroup analysis according to the type of HIP concurred with the overall analysis for women with DM (MD 0.07; 95 %CI 0.01 to 0.13; p = 0.02) and for women with GDM (MD 0.012; 95 %CI 0.07 to 0.17; p < 0.00 001) but not for women with GIGT (MD -0.01, 95 % CI -0.28 to 0.27; p = 0.96).

In this prospective, multicenter trial we evaluated whether additional shear wave elastography (SWE) for patients with BI-RADS 3 or 4 lesions on breast ultrasound could further refine the assessment with B-mode breast ultrasound for breast cancer diagnosis.
We analyzed prospective, multicenter, international data from 1288 women with breast lesions rated by conventional 2 D B-mode ultrasound as BI-RADS 3 to 4c and undergoing 2D-SWE. After reclassification with SWE the proportion of undetected malignancies should be < 2 %. All patients underwent histopathologic evaluation (reference standard).
Histopathologic evaluation showed malignancy in 368 of 1288 lesions (28.6 %). The assessment with B-mode breast ultrasound resulted in 1.39 % (6 of 431) undetected malignancies (malignant lesions in BI-RADS 3) and 53.80 % (495 of 920) unnecessary biopsies (biopsies in benign lesions). link2 Re-classifying BI-RADS 4a patients with a SWE cutoff of 2.55 m/s resulted in 1.98 % (11 of 556) undetected malignancies and a reduction of 24.24 % (375 vs. 495) of unnecessary biopsies.
A SWE value below 2.55 m/s for BI-RADS 4a lesions could be used to downstage these lesions to follow-up, and therefore reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies by 24.24 %. link3 However, this would come at the expense of some additionally missed cancers compared to B-mode breast ultrasound (rate of undetected malignancies 1.98 %, 11 of 556, versus 1.39 %, 6 of 431) which would, however, still be in line with the ACR BI-RADS 3 definition (< 2 % of undetected malignancies).
