Green infrastructure (GI) implementation can benefit an urban environment by reducing the impacts of urban stormwater on aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, few studies have systematically analyzed the biophysical effects on regional meteorology and air quality that are triggered by changes in the urban vegetative coverage. In this study we use a state-of-the-art high-resolution air quality model to simulate the effects of a hypothetically feasible vegetation-focused GI implementation scenario in Kansas City, MO/KS on regional meteorology and air quality. Full year simulations are conducted for both the base case and GI land use scenarios using two different land surface models (LSMs) schemes inside the meteorological model. While the magnitudes of the changes in air quality due to the GI implementation differ using the two LSMs, the model outputs consistently showed increases in summertime PM2.5 (1.1 μg m-3, approximately 10% increase using NOAH LSM), which occurred mostly during the night and arose from the primary components, due to the cooler surface temperatures and the decreased planetary boundary layer height (PBLH). Both the maximum daily 8-hour average ozone and 1 h daily maximum O3 during summertime, decreased over the downtown areas (maximum decreases of 0.9 and 1.4 ppbv respectively). The largest ozone decreases were simulated to happen during the night, mainly caused by the titration effect of increased NOx concentration from the lower PBLH. These results highlight the region-specific non-linear process feedback from GI on regional air quality, and further demonstrate the need for comprehensive coupled meteorological-air quality modeling systems and necessity of accurate land surface model for studying these impacts. There is a growing understanding of how oil pollution can affect aquatic ecosystems, including physical and chemical effects. One of the biggest challenges with detecting the effects of oil-related contaminants on biota from resource development is understanding the background levels and potential effects of the exposure of biota to contaminants from various natural and anthropogenic sources prior to large scale oil and gas operations. Seabirds are effective indicators of pollution, and can be useful for tracking oil-related contaminants in the marine environment. We sampled four seabird species (black guillemot, Cepphus grylle; thick-billed murre, Uria lomvia; black-legged kittiwake, Rissa tridactyla; and northern fulmar, Fulmarus glacialis) in the Baffin Bay-Davis Strait region of the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic oceans, an area where natural oil and gas seeps are present but lacking any large-scale oil and gas projects. We found detectable levels of PACs and several trace elements in all species examined. Alkylated PAC levels were higher than parent compounds in all four seabird species examined, with fulmars and murres having the highest levels detected; mean hepatic concentrations of ∑16PAC were 99.05, 46.42, 12.78 and 9.57 ng/g lw, respectively, for guillemots, murres, fulmars and kittiwakes. Overall, PAC concentrations in the seabird species examined were similar to PAC concentrations measured in other bird species in regions with more industrialization. These findings provide data which can be used to assess the current oil-related contaminant exposure of biota in the region. As well, they provide background levels for the region at a time when shipping activity is relatively low, which can used for future comparisons following expected increases in shipping and oil and gas activities in the region.Plants possess a well-organized protective network, wherein antioxidant enzymes play an important part in dealing with oxidative stress induced by over accumulation of ROS in plant cells. In the present study, a microcosm hydroponic experiment was performed to investigate the molecular modification of antioxidant enzymes at subcellular levels in rice seedlings in the presence of either trivalent [Cr(III)] or hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] using rice oligonucleotide microarray analysis. The results indicated that the production of ROS induced by Cr(III, VI) was concentration-dependent, Cr-specific and tissue-specific. Trivalent or hexavalent chromium exposure significantly (p less then 0.05) altered the antioxidant enzymes activities in both rice tissues in comparison to control plants. In total, 41 genes were identified from the data of rice oligonucleotide microarray analysis. Under Cr(III) exposure, relatively higher expression of genes was observed in roots compared to those in shoots (p less then 0.05), while gene expressions in both plant parts differed slightly during Cr(VI) exposure, implying different regulation and response strategies of plants against Cr(III) and Cr(VI). Subcellular localization indicated that genes encoding SOD, POD, APX, and GPX are mainly prevalent in the cytoplasm (30.77%), chloroplasts (29.23%), peroxisomes (10.77%) and mitochondria (9.23%), suggesting that cytoplasm and chloroplasts are the main sites responsible for scavenging ROS through enzymatic processes. Our study provides new insight into the roles of antioxidant enzymes in ROS metabolism at subcellular levels under Cr exposure. The risk of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the water recharged with reclaimed water is a bottleneck for water reuse. Erlotinib order The suppression effects and mechanisms of the combination of UV-C and berberine on Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus in reclaimed water were investigated. Mono UV-C irradiation at 75 mJ cm-2 could suppress the growth of M. aeruginosa for 7 d and that at 90 mJ cm-2 could suppress the growth of S. obliquus for 5 d. UV-C irradiation combined with 0.2-2 mg L-1 berberine lengthened the inhibition period of M. aeruginosa to 10- > 22 d and that of S. obliquus to 7- > 22 d and induced more rapid lethal effects on the harmful microalgal cells, in significant synergetic patterns. The combination of UV-C and berberine suppressed total, intracellular and extracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) more effectively and decreased the MC-LR quota significantly, which further reduced the risks of microcystin production and release. Furthermore, synergetic mechanisms of the combined treatments were systematically investigated from the aspects of photosynthetic system (photosynthetic activity and pigments), metabolic activity (ATP and membrane potential), oxidation stress (reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH)), and apoptosis-like cell death (phosphatidylserine (PS) ectropion, caspase-3 activity and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) positive rate).
