Surgery included suboccipital craniectomy (52/57, 91%), plus partial C1 superior laminectomy (2/57, 4%), and plus duraplasty (3/57, 6%). Redo surgery was undertaken in 7/57 patients (12%). At final follow-up, 56/57 (98%) patients achieved a good (CCOS 13-16) or satisfactory (CCOS 9-12) outcome based on COSS.

Algal-derived extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) form cohesive network to interconnect the cells and substrates; however, their interactions within the biofilm are poorly understood. This scenario impedes the biofilm process development toward resource recovery. Herein, this review elucidates on various biofilm cultivation modes and contribution of EPS toward biofilm adhesion. Immobilized microalgae can be envisioned by the colloid interactions in terms of a balance of both dispersive and polar interactions among three interfaces (cells, mediums and substrates). Last portion of this review is dedicated to the future perspectives and challenges on the EPS; with regard to the biopolymers extraction, biopolymers' functional description and cross-referencing between model biofilms and full-scale biofilm systems are evaluated. This review will serve as an informative reference for readers having interest in microalgal biofilm phenomenon by incorporating the three main players in attached cultivation systems microalgae, EPS and supporting materials. The ability to mass produce these miniature cellular biochemical factories via immobilized biofilm technology will lay the groundwork for a more sustainable and feasible production. Background and purpose - Gaining experience in the surgery room during residency is an important part of learning the skills needed to perform arthroplasties. However, in practice, patients are often not fully comfortable with trainee involvement in their own surgery. Therefore, we investigated complications, revision rates, mortality, and operative time of orthopedic surgeons and residents as primary surgeon performing total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) or total hip arthroplasties (THAs).Patients and methods - In this multi-center retrospective cohort study, 3,098 TKAs and 4,027 THAs performed between 2007 and 2013 were analyzed. Complications, revisions, mortality, and operative time were compared for patients operated on by the orthopedic surgeon or a resident as primary surgeon. An additional analysis was performed to determine whether the complication risk was affected by the postgraduate year of the resident. Results - Orthopedic complication rates were similar (TKA orthopedic surgeon 10%, resident 11%; THA 9% and 8%), revision rates (TKA 3% and 2%, THA 3% and 2%), or mortality rates (TKA 0.1% and 0.3%, THA 0.2% and 0.3%). For both procedures a higher non-orthopedic complication rate was found in the resident group (TKA 8% and 10%; p = 0.03, THA 8% and 10%; p = 0.01) and a slightly longer operative time (TKA mean difference 9.0 minutes (8%); THA 11.3 minutes (11%)).Interpretation - Complications, revisions, and mortality were similar in TKAs or THAs performed by the resident as primary surgeon compared with surgeries performed by an orthopedic surgeon. This data can be used in teaching hospitals and may help to reassure patients.

To correlate dual energy computed tomography electron density measurements with histopathological cerebral glioma grading to determine whether it can be used as a non-invasive predictor of cerebral glioma grade.

Fifty patients with suspected cerebral gliomas on imaging scheduled to undergo resection were included. We tested our hypothesis that with increasing glioma grade, increased tumor cellularity should translate into increased electron density and if a statistically significant difference between electron density of low-grade gliomas and high-grade gliomas is seen, we may have a clinical use of dual energy computed tomography as a non-invasive tool to predict cerebral glioma grade.A pre-operative dual energy computed tomography scan of the brain was performed, and electron density measurements calculated from the solid part of the tumor. Obtaining a ratio with electron density of contralateral normal brain parenchyma normalized these values. The minimum, maximum and mean electron density and their noferentiation of low-grade gliomas from high-grade gliomas and show a linear, statistically significant positive correlation with Ki-67 index. This study aimed to investigate the relations among perceived chronic social adversity, hope and suicidal ideation among Chinese college students. 535 college students completed the Perceived Chronic Social Adversity Questionnaire (PCSAQ), the Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS), and the Revised Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (RADHS). The results showed that perceived chronic social adversity was positively associated with suicidal ideation, and hope was negatively associated with suicidal ideation. The results also confirmed that hope negatively moderated the relationship between perceived chronic social adversity and suicidal ideation. Further study showed that there was a significant positive relation between perceived chronic social adversity and suicidal ideation under the low hope level, however, there was a non-significant relation between perceived chronic social adversity and suicidal ideation under the high hope level.

Intra-abdominal hypertension is frequently present in critically ill patients and is an independent predictor for mortality. In this narrative review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of current insights into intra-abdominal pressure monitoring, intra-abdominal hypertension, and abdominal compartment syndrome. selleck chemical The focus of this review is on the pathophysiology, risk factors and outcome of intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome, and on therapeutic strategies, such as non-operative management, surgical decompression, and management of the open abdomen. Finally, future steps are discussed, including propositions of what a future guideline should focus on.

Pathological intra-abdominal pressure is a continuum ranging from mild intra-abdominal pressure elevation without clinically significant adverse effects to substantial increase in intra-abdominal pressure with serious consequences to all organ systems. link2 Intra-abdominal pressure monitoring should be performed in all patients intra-abdominal hypertension treatment on patient outcome.Aiming at the low mining rate in mines, Xingelao, Dabianyao, and Dongliang Coal Mines in Shenmu Mining Area, Shaanxi Province, China were taken as research objects. Based on this, this study constructed an evaluation index system for the mining capacity of the mines from the perspectives of geological factors, mechanical equipment, humans, and mining design. Moreover, the factors influencing the mining capacity of the mines were evaluated using a combination weighting approach based on an improved analytic hierarchy process and an entropy weight method. A standard cloud was generated based on the mapping standards of each index and a comprehensive cloud was obtained according to comprehensive weight and a backward cloud algorithm. Finally, by combining the comprehensive cloud with local and overall scores of the mines, the mining capacities of the mines were evaluated. The research results demonstrate that the key factor restricting the mining capacity of the mines is the geological environment and five major third-grade indexes affecting mining capacity are igneous rock intrusion, collapse column, scouring zone of the ancient river bed, mechanization level and coal pillar width. In addition, the corresponding suggestions and measures were put forward according to the main factors influencing the mining rate of the mines. In accordance with the weights and scores of each index, the overall scores of the mines were calculated. Dongliang, Dabianyao, and Xingelao Coal Mines were ranked in order based on scores. The research results provide a theoretical basis for improving the mining capacity of the mines under similar geological conditions. Background Pancreatic cancer (PC) has a poor prognosis and is prone to liver metastasis. The KAI1/CD82 gene inhibits PC metastasis. This study aimed to explore differential metabolites and enrich the pathways in serum samples between PC and liver metastasis nude mouse models stably expressing KAI1/CD82. Methods KAI1/CD82-PLV-EF1α-MCS-IRES-Puro vector and PANC1 cell line stably expressing KAI1/CD82 were constructed for the first time. This cell line was used to construct 3 PC nude mouse models and 3 liver metastasis nude mouse models. The different metabolites and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) and human metabolome database (HMDB) enrichment pathways were analyzed using the serum samples of the 2 groups of nude mouse models on the basis of untargeted ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry platform. Results KAI1/CD82-PLV-EF1α-MCS-IRES-Puro vector and PANC1 cell line stably expressing KAI1/CD82 were constructed successfully, and all nude mouse models survived and developed cancers. Among the 1233 metabolites detected, 18 metabolites (9 upregulated and 9 downregulated) showed differences. In agreement with the literature data, the most significant differences between both groups were found in the levels of bile acids (taurocholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid), glycine, prostaglandin E2, vitamin D, guanosine monophosphate, and inosine. Bile recreation, primary bile acid biosynthesis, and purine metabolism KEGG pathways and a series of HMDB pathways (P  less then  .05) contained differential metabolites that may be associated with liver metastasis from PC. However, the importance of these metabolites on PC liver metastases remains to be elucidated. Conclusions Our findings suggested that the metabolomic approach may be a useful method to detect potential biomarkers in PC.There is an ever-growing interest in metabolomic profiling using noninvasive, real-time techniques that avoid sample manipulation and are painless for the patients. link3 In this context, breath analysis is gaining much attention, and several ionization techniques have been developed to get insights in real-time into metabolic status by analyzing breath through mass spectrometry, such as Proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), and Secondary electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SESI-MS). SESI-MS is the most recently developed analytical platform displaying particular adequate characteristics for breath analysis, such as the low detection limits, and the detection of low volatility species, which tend to present a higher biological significance. Here, we review the SESI technology development, the different SESI configurations developed, and the standardization procedures described to translate SESI into the clinical environment. Finally, SESI main applications described in the literature with prompt translation into the clinical environment, namely, biomarker discovery or pharmacokinetics and drug monitoring are revised.
