For high-resolution powder diffraction in material science, high photon energies are necessary, especially for in situ and in operando experiments. For this purpose, a multi-analyser detector (MAD) was developed for the high-energy beamline P02.1 at PETRA III of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY). In order to be able to adjust the detector for the high photon energies of 60 keV, an individually adjustable analyser-crystal setup was designed. The adjustment is performed via piezo stepper motors for each of the ten channels. The detector shows a low and flat background as well as a high signal-to-noise ratio. A range of standard materials were measured for characterizing the performance. Two exemplary experiments were performed to demonstrate the potential for sophisticated structural analysis with the MAD (i) the structure of a complex material based on strontium niobate titanate and strontium niobate zirconate was determined and (ii) an in situ stroboscopy experiment with an applied electric field on a highly absorbing piezoceramic was performed. These experiments demonstrate the capabilities of the new MAD, which advances the frontiers of the structural characterization of materials. In this paper the back-side-illuminated Percival 2-Megapixel (P2M) detector is presented, along with its characterization by means of optical and X-ray photons. For the first time, the response of the system to soft X-rays (250 eV to 1 keV) is presented. The main performance parameters of the first detector are measured, assessing the capabilities in terms of noise, dynamic range and single-photon discrimination capability. Present limitations and coming improvements are discussed.Side-bounce beamlines with fixed-exit angles have been intended to operate with only one selected energy. However, a tunable monochromator in a new geometry is presented here that will make side-bounce beamlines energy tunable. It requires the addition of two more rotations. click here Analytic solutions for the values of these two rotation angles are provided. The validity of the new concept was checked by ray tracing and two-dimensional searches in the additional angles. Operational details on the new scheme, including the exit offset and steering of the beams, were determined. In addition to tunability, the new monochromator will reduce the loss from the polarization factor at low energies. This work presents the improvements in the design and testing of polarimeters based on channel-cut crystals for nuclear resonant scattering experiments at the 14.4 keV resonance of 57Fe. By using four asymmetric reflections at asymmetry angles of α1 = -28°, α2 = 28°, α3 = -28° and α4 = 28°, the degree of polarization purity could be improved to 2.2 × 10-9. For users, an advanced polarimeter without beam offset is now available at beamline P01 of the storage ring PETRA III.This paper presents an absolute X-ray photon energy measurement method that uses a Bond diffractometer. The proposed system enables the prompt and rapid in situ measurement of photon energies over a wide energy range. The diffractometer uses a reference silicon single-crystal plate and a highly accurate angle encoder called SelfA. The performance of the system is evaluated by repeatedly measuring the energy of the first excited state of the potassium-40 nuclide. The excitation energy is determined as 29829.39 (6) eV, and this is one order of magnitude more accurate than the previous measurement. The estimated uncertainty of the photon energy measurement was 0.7 p.p.m. as a standard deviation and the maximum observed deviation was 2 p.p.m.In this manuscript, characterization of single-crystalline (111) plates prepared from type-Ib diamonds with a nitrogen content of 100-150 ppm by means of high-resolution rocking-curve imaging (RCI) is reported. Contrary to common opinion regarding the intrinsically poor diffraction quality of type-I diamonds, RCI showed the presence of nearly defect-free areas of several millimetres squared in the central part of the diamond plates. The observed broadening of the rocking curves is a result of the cutting and polishing processes, causing strains around the edges of the plates and rare defects. An improvement of the preparation technique will thus allow single-crystalline diamond plates to be made for Laue and Bragg monochromators and beam splitters from type-Ib material with areas large enough to be used as optical elements at fourth-generation synchrotron facilities. The performance of a liquid-nitrogen-cooled high-heat-load monochromator with a horizontal scattering plane has been analysed, aiming to preserve the high quality of the X-ray beam in the vertical plane for downstream optics. Using finite-element analysis, height profiles of the crystal surface for various heat loads and the corresponding slope errors in the meridional and sagittal planes were calculated. Then the angular distortions of the reflected beam in both meridional and sagittal planes were calculated analytically and also modelled by ray tracing, revealing a good agreement of the two approaches. The results show that with increasing heat load in the crystal the slope errors of the crystal surface reach their smallest values first in the sagittal and then in the meridional plane. For the considered case of interest at a photon energy of 14.412 keV and the Si(111) reflection with a Bragg angle of 7.88°, the angular distortions of the reflected beam in the sagittal plane are an order of magnitude smaller than in the meridional one. Furthermore, they are smaller than the typical angular size of the beam source at the monochromator position. For a high-heat-load monochromator operating in the horizontal scattering plane, the sagittal angular distortions of the reflected beam appear in the vertical plane. Thus, such an instrument perfectly preserves the high quality of the X-ray beam in the vertical plane for downstream optics. Compared with vertical scattering, the throughput of the monochromatic beam with the horizontal scattering plane is reduced by only 3.3% for the new EBS source, instead of 34.3% for the old ESRF-1 machine. This identifies the horizontal-scattering high-heat-load monochromator as a device essentially free of the heat-load effects in the vertical plane and without significant loss in terms of throughput.
