Female gender was significantly associated with higher percentage of VSD (p = 0.031) more than male. While male patients had significantly higher percentages of ASD and valvular anomalies than female patients (p = 0.019 and 0.033, respectively). click here Conclusions The patient's gender was significantly associated with some types of CHD. Both ASD and valvular lesions were more common among males, while VSD was more common among female patients, no gender differences were detected regarding the other types of CHD.Background The placenta is a temporary pivotal organ - the gate between the mother and the fetus. It has multiple functions such as nutrient uptake, elimination of waste products, gas exchange, and production of some vital hormones. However, the pregnancy state is a diabetogenic condition caused by insulin resistance, resulting from physiological variations. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can have an impact on both the mother and the fetus by causing numerous complications. In our research study, we aim to study and compare the quantitative effect of GDM at the microscopical level within the chorionic villi of the placenta of both mothers diagnosed with GDM and healthy mothers as well as the clinical correlation. Methods After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we collected 84 placental samples from February 2017 until May 2017, which were composed of 42 GDM samples and 42 healthy samples. All of these samples have been studied under a light microscope for measuring different parameters. Resuations for the mother and the fetus. Therefore, identifying pregnant women with GDM and controlling hyperglycemia will improve the outcomes of the pregnancy.

To compare the outcome of prednisolone versus placebo in females presenting with hyperemesis gravidarum during first trimester of pregnancy.

Randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore over a period of 12 months. A total of 300 patients were divided equally into two groups, i.e. prednisolone 20 mg orally 12 hourly for seven days and placebo for the same duration. Follow up in the outpatient department after one week was done to assess for continuous and/or high-frequency vomiting (as per operational definitions). Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Statistics version 22 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) was used to analyze data. Quantitative and qualitative variables were assessed in terms of mean/standard deviation and frequency/percentage respectively. Comparison of two study groups and stratified confounding factors (age and parity) were assessed by chi-square test (significant P-valve ≤ 0.05).

28.7% of cases of the prednisolone group hadcontinuous and/or high frequency vomiting in comparison to 46% of the placebo group (p=0.002).

We aimed to assess the main indications, diagnostic yield, and safety of FFB in our institute. Methods A total of 216 patients who underwent FFB between July 2009 and June 2012 at King Abdul-Aziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, were reviewed retrospectively. Indications of the procedure, the diagnostic yield of variable respiratory diseases, and complications were reported. Result Out of 216 patients, 210 (97.2%) completed FFB. One hundred and ninety-eight (91.7%) bronchoscopies were for diagnostic purposes, and the remaining 12 (5.6%) were for therapeutic aim. The mean age of patients was 50 years ± 20 years and patients. Respiratory infection, malignancy, pulmonary infiltrate in febrile neutropenia (FN), and hemoptysis in order of frequency were the main indications. The overall diagnostic yield was 46%. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) was the most common indication (26.8%) and was identified in 37.7%, whereas pneumonia was confirmed in 46.3% of the patients. Malignancy was established in 35.3% of suspected cases, while eosinophilic pneumonia was diagnosed in 100%. The diagnostic yield in pulmonary infiltrates of human immunodeficiency viral (HIV) was 85.7%. Alveolar hemorrhage was the most common cause of hemoptysis. Out of therapeutic bronchoscopy, lung collapse was the main indication. There is no mortality and complications occurred in 1.5% of the cases. Conclusion MTB was the most common indication of FFB, followed by malignancy. It has a high diagnostic yield in eosinophilic pneumonia and pulmonary infiltrates in HIV patients. FFB is shown to be a safe modality for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Background Breast cancer (BC) is known to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths after lung cancer in Saudi Arabia. Early detection using screening methods can improve disease outcomes. In Saudi Arabia, the rates of BC screening are very low although it is a country that provides free healthcare services. This discrepancy between the availability of free healthcare services and women not utilizing these services necessitates an in-depth understanding of the health-related beliefs and barriers towards BC screening among Saudi women. Objective We aimed to use the Health Belief Model (HBM) to predict the uptake of mammographic screening among Saudi women. The secondary objective was to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to BC and mammography screening. Research methodology This was an analytical cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire, which consisted of sociodemographic data, family history of BC, general information about BC, and the Champion's Health Belief Mnd motivation components along with the knowledge and other factors can be used to predict mammogram screening. Conclusion Among our cohort of Saudi women, 62.1% had general awareness about BC, and younger age, marital status, and positive family history of BC were significantly associated with women undergoing mammography screening. The CHBMS components cannot be used in isolation to predict the risk of not undergoing mammogram screening, while barriers and motivation components along with the knowledge and other factors can be used to predict mammogram screening.Globally colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality among men. Treatment modalities of chemotherapy and radiotherapy may put a risk in developing therapy related myeloid leukemia (TRML). TRML has been reported with Oxaliplatin, Capecitabine, and radiation therapy, which may consequently lead to DNA damage, causing a secondary disease. Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) is a type of TRML that occurs as a result of such therapies. We present a case of a 30 year old male who presented as a case of colorectal cancer. Subsequently, the patient received Capecitabine with radiotherapy followed by abdominoperineal resection. He received four additional cycles of XELOX protocol of chemotherapy. Months later, he returned with an intestinal obstruction and a picture of TRML. After a bone marrow biopsy, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and cytogenetics evaluation, the diagnosis of APL was confirmed. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) therapy was initiated with excellent response. In conclusion, TRML in the form of APL needs to be diagnosed early and treated as a medical emergency to prevent the high mortality rate associated with the disease.Biodegradable mulches are considered a promising alternative to polyethylene-based, nonbiodegradable mulch for sustainable agriculture. In the present study, a bioactive 2-methyl-4- cholorophenoxyacetic acid/poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (MCPA-PHBV) conjugate blended with biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate/polylactide (PBAT/PLA) was developed and used as mulch under controlled condition greenhouse pot experiment with fava bean (Vicia faba) as the nontarget crop species. The objectives were to examine the effectiveness of sustained-release of MCPA herbicide from biodegradable mulch for broadleaf weed suppression and to assess any adverse effects of the herbicide on the nontarget species (fava bean). The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS) suggests that a substantial quantity of the herbicide was released from the biodegradable mulch which effectively killed the broadleaf weed species even at 1% MCPA concentration. However, the higher concentrations of the herbicide adversely affected several physiological parameters of fava bean growth and development. Stomatal conductance decreased, while leaf temperature subsequently rose (at MCPA concentrations 5, 7.5, and 10%). The quantum yield of the Photosystem II (PSII) indicates that the photosynthetic efficiency was also restricted at concentrations 7.5% and 10%. Evidently, this slow-release herbicide system worked efficiently for broadleaf weed control but at higher concentrations, resulted in adverse physiological effects on the nontarget crop species. This study has demonstrated that biodegradable mulches containing MCPA herbicide are able to effectively inhibit the growth of broad leaf weed species and may be of potential importance in a wide variety of horticultural and agricultural applications.Anthropogenic disturbance and distinctive geochemistry have resulted in rocky desertification in many karst regions of the world. Seed banks are crucial to vegetation regeneration in degraded karst ecosystems characterized by a discontinuous distribution of soil and seasonal drought stress. However, the dynamics of seed banks across one complete series of secondary succession and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We selected eight typical stages during secondary succession, conducted aboveground vegetation survey and collected 960 soil samples in the Guiyang karst landscape of China. Seed density, species richness and plant life forms in seed banks were determined via the germination method. The results indicated that the seed density in seed banks before and after field seed germination was significantly different among most succession stages. Community succession had impacts on the seed density of seed banks before and after field seed germination. Seed density ranged from 1,042 seedlings.m-2 in evergreen broadleaf forests to 3,755 seedlings.m-2 in the herb community, which was a relatively high density. The seed density and similar species composition between the seed banks and vegetation declined with succession from early to later stages. Species richness in seed banks was highest in middle succession stages and increased with increasing species richness of aboveground vegetation. The species richness of the five life forms in the seed banks showed different variations across these succession stages. The conservation of diverse aboveground vegetation can maintain the diversity of seed banks for restoration.

The Norwegian regulations for nursing homes consider access to meaningful activities to be an indicator for the quality of nursing homes. Activities of daily living (ADL) provide important basic self-care skills for nursing home residents. Due to the physical changes caused by ageing and comorbidities, nursing home residents may experience functional decline over time, which may affect their ability to perform meaningful ADL, such as outdoor activity, which is considered a valuable and meaningful activity in Norwegian culture. This study aimed to investigate the association between ADL status, institution-dwelling and outdoor activity among nursing home residents.

This cross-sectional study included 784 residents aged >67 years living in 21 nursing homes in 15 Norwegian municipalities between November 2016 and May 2018. The Barthel Index was used to assess the nursing home residents' ADL status. Other variables collected were age, gender, body weight and height, visits per month, institution, ward, and participation in weekly outdoor activities.
