Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were synthesized using the chemical coprecipitation method. Several nanoparticle samples were synthesized by varying the concentration of iron salt precursors in the solution for the synthesis. Two batches of nanoparticles with average sizes of 10.2 nm and 12.2 nm with nearly similar particle-size distributions were investigated. The average particle sizes were determined from the XRD patterns and TEM images. For each batch, several samples with different particle concentrations were prepared. Morphological analysis of the samples was performed using TEM. The phase and structure of the particles of each batch were studied using XRD, selected area electron diffraction (SAED), Raman and XPS spectroscopy. Magnetic hysteresis loops were obtained using a Lakeshore vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature. In the two batches, the particles were found to be of the same pure crystalline phase of magnetite. The effects of particle size, size distribution, and concentration on the magnetic properties and magneto thermic efficiency were investigated. Heating profiles, under an alternating magnetic field, were obtained for the two batches of nanoparticles with frequencies 765.85, 634.45, 491.10, 390.25, 349.20, 306.65, and 166.00 kHz and field amplitudes of 100, 200, 250, 300 and 350 G. The specific absorption rate (SAR) values for the particles of size 12.2 nm are higher than those for the particles of size 10.2 nm at all concentrations and field parameters. SAR decreases with the increase of particle concentration. SAR obtained for all the particle concentrations of the two batches increases almost linearly with the field frequency (at fixed field strength) and nonlinearly with the field amplitude (at fixed field frequency). SAR value obtained for magnetite nanoparticles with the highest magnetization is 145.84 W/g at 765.85 kHz and 350 G, whereas the SAR value of the particles with the least magnetization is 81.67 W/g at the same field and frequency.Aiming to fulfil the sustainability criteria of future biorefineries, a novel biomass pretreatment combining natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDESs) and microwave (MW) technology was developed. Results showed that NaDESs have a high potential as green solvents for lignin fractionation/recovery and sugar release in the following enzymatic hydrolysis. A new class of lignin derived NaDESs (LigDESs) was also investigated, showing promising effects in wheat straw delignification. MW irradiation enabled a fast pretreatment under mild condition (120 °C, 30 min). To better understand the interaction of MW with these green solvents, the dielectric properties of NaDESs were investigated. Furthermore, a NaDES using the lignin recovered from biomass pretreatment as hydrogen bond donor was prepared, thus paving the way for a "closed-loop" biorefinery process. The dysfunction of vascular endothelial cells is profoundly implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, the global leading cause of death. Aquaporins (AQPs) are membrane channels that facilitate water and glycerol transport across cellular membranes recently implicated in the homeostasis of the cardiovascular system. Apolipoprotein-E deficient (apoE-/-) mice are a common model to study the progression of atherosclerosis. Nevertheless, the pattern of expression of AQPs in this atheroprone model is poorly characterized. In this study, apoE-/- mice were fed an atherogenic high-fat (HF) or a control diet. Plasma was collected at multiple time points to assess metabolic disturbances. see more At the endpoint, the aortic atherosclerotic burden was quantified using high field magnetic resonance imaging. Moreover, the transcriptional levels of several AQP isoforms were evaluated in the liver, white adipocyte tissue (WAT), and brown adipocyte tissue (BAT). The results revealed that HF-fed mice, when compared to controls, presented an exacerbated systemic inflammation and atherosclerotic phenotype, with no major differences in systemic methylation status, circulating amino acids, or plasma total glutathione. Moreover, an overexpression of the isoform AQP5 was detected in all studied tissues from HF-fed mice when compared to controls. These results suggest a novel role for AQP5 on diet-induced atherosclerosis that warrants further investigation. In the last decade, the development of more compact and lightweight radiation detection systems led to their application in handheld and small unmanned systems, particularly air-based platforms. Examples of improvements are the use of silicon photomultiplier-based scintillators, new scintillating crystals, compact dual-mode detectors (gamma/neutron), data fusion, mobile sensor networks, cooperative detection and search. Gamma cameras and dual-particle cameras are increasingly being used for source location. This study reviews and discusses the research advancements in the field of gamma-ray and neutron measurements using mobile radiation detection systems since the Fukushima nuclear accident. Four scenarios are considered radiological and nuclear accidents and emergencies; illicit traffic of special nuclear materials and radioactive materials; nuclear, accelerator, targets, and irradiation facilities; and naturally occurring radioactive materials monitoring-related activities. The work presented in this paper aims to compile and review information on the radiation detection systems, contextual sensors and platforms used for each scenario; assess their advantages and limitations, looking prospectively to new research and challenges in the field; and support the decision making of national radioprotection agencies and response teams in respect to adequate detection system for each scenario. For that, an extensive literature review was conducted.Annual wild soybean (G. soja) is the ancestor of the cultivated soybean (G. max). To reveal the genetic changes from soja to max, an improved wild soybean chromosome segment substitution line (CSSL) population, SojaCSSLP5, composed of 177 CSSLs with 182 SSR markers (SSR-map), was developed based on SojaCSSLP1 generated from NN1138-2(max)×N24852(soja). The SojaCSSLP5 was genotyped further through whole-genome resequencing, resulting in a physical map with 1366 SNPLDBs (SNP linkage-disequilibrium blocks), which are composed of more markers/segments, shorter marker length and more recombination breakpoints than the SSR-map and caused 721 new wild substituted segments. Using the SNPLDB-map, two loci co-segregating with seed-coat color (SCC) and six loci for days to flowering (DTF) with 88.02% phenotypic contribution were identified. Integrated with parental RNA-seq and DNA-resequencing, two SCC and six DTF candidate genes, including three previously cloned (G, E2 and GmPRR3B) and five newly detected ones, were predicted and verified at nucleotide mutant level, and then demonstrated with the consistency between gene-alleles and their phenotypes in SojaCSSLP5. In total, six of the eight genes were identified with the parental allele-pairs coincided to those in 303 germplasm accessions, then were further demonstrated by the consistency between gene-alleles and germplasm phenotypes. Accordingly, the CSSL population integrated with parental DNA and RNA sequencing data was demonstrated to be an efficient platform in identifying candidate wild vs. cultivated gene-alleles.Implantation of gold weights into the upper eyelid is a proven method of treating lagophthalmos and exposure keratopathy in patients with unresolved facial nerve palsy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting visual acuity and corneal complications in patients after upper eyelid gold weight lid loading.
This prospective consecutive clinical study was conducted in years 2012-2018. In total, 59 people (40 women, 19 men aged 55.5 ± 17.4 years) meeting the inclusion criteria were treated with gold weights. The ordered multinomial logit model was used to analyze the factors affecting best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and degree of exposure keratopathy after surgery. The influence of the following variables was analyzed patient age, etiology and duration of the facial nerve palsy, history of the previous eyelid surgery, degree of lagophthalmos in mm, presence of Bell's phenomenon, and corneal sensation, Schirmer test results.
Implantation of gold weights into the upper eyelid effectively re Bell's phenomenon and/or a lack of corneal sensation should be the first candidates for immediate correction of lagophthalmos.
The results of our study may help to answer the question of how to direct ophthalmologists and other specialists who refer to ophthalmologists for management advice in patients with facial nerve palsy. Elderly patients with a history of tarsorrhaphy who present with poor Bell's phenomenon and/or a lack of corneal sensation should be the first candidates for immediate correction of lagophthalmos.Oncolytic virus (OV) treatment may offer a new treatment option for the aggressive brain tumor glioblastoma. Clinical trials testing oncolytic viruses in this patient group have shown promising results, with patients achieving impressive long-term clinical responses. However, the number of responders to each OV remains low. This is thought to arise from the large heterogeneity of these tumors, both in terms of molecular make-up and their immune-suppressive microenvironment, leading to variability in responses. An approach that may improve response rates is the personalized utilization of oncolytic viruses against Glioblastoma (GBM), based on specific tumor- or patient-related characteristics. In this review, we discuss potential biomarkers for response to different OVs as well as emerging ex vivo assays that in the future may enable selection of optimal OV for a specific patient and design of stratified clinical OV trials for GBM.This study intends to characterize the sialotranscriptome profile of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in response to Theileria equi and identify genes of interest with differential genomic expression, indicating relevant targets in the tick-protozoan interactions. The experimental design consisted of RNA sequencing from uninfected and T. equi-infected R. microplus salivary glands (SGs) to obtain transcriptomic profiles for characterization and comparison. A total of 288,952 transcripts were obtained from both tick profiles, 3456 transcripts (p less then 0.05) differentially expressed in response to T. equi infection. The uninfected SGs' registered 231,179 transcripts, of which 155,359 were annotated. The most transcribed sequences were female-specific histamine binding protein and lipocalins. Regarding the T. equi-infected SGs, from the 238,964 assembled transcripts, 163,564 were annotated. The most transcribed sequences were histone demethylase JARID1 and Y-box-binding protein. Five transcripts (cystatin, arginase, nuclear factor κB kinase inhibitor subunit β (IκB), IκB delta, lysosomal-trafficking regulator, and reeler protein) presented the gene ontology (GO) category "response to protozoan" and were exclusively displayed in the T. equi-infected profile. The transcriptome of T. equi was also analyzed, registering 4728 hits. The study's genetic and molecular information would be of great value for future studies and biotechnological applications envisaging disease control.
