Recently proposed alternative dimensional models of personality disorder (PD) place the severity of impairments in self and interpersonal functioning at the core of personality pathology. However, associations of these impairments with disturbances in social, cognitive, and affective brain networks remain uninvestigated.

The present study examined patterns of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in a sample of 74 age- and sex-matched participants (45 inpatients with PD and 29 healthy controls). At a minimum, PD patients carried a diagnosis of borderline PD, although the majority of the sample had one or more additional PDs. rsFC patterns in the following networks were compared between groups and in association with dimensional personality impairments default mode network (DMN)/core mentalization, frontolimbic, salience, and central executive. Further, the extent to which variation in rsFC was explained by levels of personality impairment as compared to typology-specific borderline PD symptom severternative dimensional conceptualizations of personality pathology.In the broadest sense, formulation, or case conceptualisation, is the process of collaborative sense-making. This article outlines the use of formulation in family therapy for child and adolescent eating disorders, provides guidance on how to actively include formulation more throughout treatment and discusses why this might be useful.

A randomised controlled trial (RCT) on integrated malaria prevention, which advocates the use of several malaria prevention methods holistically, has been proposed. However, before conducting an RCT, it is recommended that a feasibility study is carried out to provide information to support the main study, particularly for such a complex intervention. Therefore, a feasibility study for an RCT on integrated malaria prevention in Uganda was conducted.

The qualitative study carried out in Wakiso District employed focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) to explore community willingness to participate in the RCT as well as assess stakeholder perspectives on the future study. The participants of the FGDs were community members, while the key informants were selected from malaria stakeholders including Ministry of Health officials, health practitioners, local leaders, district health team members, and community health workers (CHWs). Thematic analysis was employed with the support of N strategy for the RCT interventions.

There was high willingness to participate in the proposed RCT on integrated malaria prevention. However, high cost and perceived negative health effects from some methods were identified as potential challenges. Due to the shortage of organs' donors that limits biological heart transplantations, mechanical circulatory supports can be implanted in case of refractory end-stage heart failure to replace partially (Ventricular Assist Device, VAD) or completely (Total Artificial Heart, TAH) the cardiac function. The hemocompatibility of mechanical circulatory supports is a fundamental issue that has not yet been fully matched; it mostly depends on the nature of blood-contacting surfaces.

In order to obtain hemocompatible materials, a pool of hybrid membranes was fabricated by coupling a synthetic polymer (polycarbonate urethane, commercially available in two formulations) with a decellularized biological tissue (porcine pericardium). To test their potential suitability as candidate materials for realizing the blood-contacting surfaces of a novel artificial heart, hybrid membranes have been preliminarily characterized in terms of physicochemical, structural and mechanical properties.

Our results ascertained that the hybrid membranes are properly stratified, thus allowing to expose their biological side to blood and their polymeric surface to the actuation system of the intended device. From the biomechanical point of view, the hybrid membranes can withstand deformations up to more than 70 % and stresses up to around 8MPa.

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) have been shown to modulate the intestinal microbiota of suckling piglets to exert beneficial effects on intestinal function. However, the modulation of intestinal microbiota and intestinal function by GOS in intestinal inflammation injury models has rarely been reported. In this study, we investigated the effects of GOS on the colonic mucosal microbiota composition, barrier function and inflammatory response of lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-challenged suckling piglets.

A total of 18 newborn suckling piglets were divided into three groups, the CON group, the LPS-CON group and the LPS-GOS group. Piglets in the LPS-GOS group were orally fed with 1 g/kg body weight of GOS solution every day. On the d 14, piglets in the LPS-CON and LPS-GOS group were challenged intraperitoneally with LPS solution. All piglets were slaughtered 2 h after intraperitoneal injection and sampled.

We found that the colonic mucosa of LPS-challenged piglets was significantly injured and shedding, while theyD88) in the LPS-challenged suckling piglets. In addition, GOS significantly reduced the relative mRNA expression of mucin2 (MUC2), and significantly increased the protein expression of Claudin-1 and zonula occluden-1 (ZO-1) in LPS-challenged suckling piglets.
