The thermal grill has especially shown promising advancements, which may be useful to examine CD pathway activation in the future. Therefore, within this topical review, a systematic review on the thermal grill illusion is intended to stimulate future research. Finally, the authors review different mechanism-based treatment approaches to combat CD pain.Recently many lifestyle factors have been shown to be associated with brain structural alterations. At present we are facing increasing population shifts from rural to urban areas, which considerably change the living environments of human beings. To investigate the association between rural vs. urban upbringing and brain structure we selected 106 14-year old adolescents of whom half were exclusively raised in rural areas and the other half who exclusively lived in cities. Voxel-based morphometry revealed a group difference in left hippocampal formation (Rural > City), which was positively associated with cognitive performance in a spatial processing task. Moreover, significant group differences were observed in spatial processing (Rural > City). A mediation analysis revealed that hippocampal formation accounted for more than half of the association between upbringing and spatial processing. The results are compatible with studies reporting earlier and more intense opportunities for spatial exploration in children brought up in rural areas. The results are interesting in the light of urban planning where spaces enabling spatial exploration for children may deserve more attention.Naturalistic experimental paradigms in neuroimaging arose from a pressure to test the validity of models we derive from highly-controlled experiments in real-world contexts. In many cases, however, such efforts led to the realization that models developed under particular experimental manipulations failed to capture much variance outside the context of that manipulation. The critique of non-naturalistic experiments is not a recent development; it echoes a persistent and subversive thread in the history of modern psychology. The brain has evolved to guide behavior in a multidimensional world with many interacting variables. The assumption that artificially decoupling and manipulating these variables will lead to a satisfactory understanding of the brain may be untenable. We develop an argument for the primacy of naturalistic paradigms, and point to recent developments in machine learning as an example of the transformative power of relinquishing control. Naturalistic paradigms should not be deployed as an afterthought if we hope to build models of brain and behavior that extend beyond the laboratory into the real world.Head motion is a major confounding factor in neuroimaging studies. While numerous studies have investigated how motion impacts estimates of functional connectivity, the effects of motion on structural connectivity measured using diffusion MRI have not received the same level of attention, despite the fact that, like functional MRI, diffusion MRI relies on elaborate preprocessing pipelines that require multiple choices at each step. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of how these choices influence motion-related contamination of structural connectivity estimates. Using a healthy adult sample (N = 294), we evaluated 240 different preprocessing pipelines, devised using plausible combinations of different choices related to explicit head motion correction, tractography propagation algorithms, track seeding methods, track termination constraints, quantitative metrics derived for each connectome edge, and parcellations. We found that an approach to motion correction that includes outlier replacement and within-slice volume correction led to a dramatic reduction in cross-subject correlations between head motion and structural connectivity strength, and that motion contamination is more severe when quantifying connectivity strength using mean tract fractional anisotropy rather than streamline count. We also show that the choice of preprocessing strategy can significantly influence subsequent inferences about network organization, with the location of network hubs varying considerably depending on the specific preprocessing steps applied. Our findings indicate that the impact of motion on structural connectivity can be successfully mitigated using recent motion-correction algorithms that include outlier replacement and within-slice motion correction.Encoding schemes are systematic large-scale arrangements that convert incoming sensory information into a format required for further information processing. The increased spatial resolution of brain images obtained with ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging at 7 T (7T-MRI) and above increases the granularity and precision of processing units that mediate the link between neuronal encoding and functional readouts. NU7441 cell line Here, these new developments are reviewed with a focus on human tactile encoding schemes derived from small-scale processing units (in the order of 0.5-5 mm) that are relevant for theoretical and practical concepts of somatosensory encoding and cortical plasticity. Precisely, we review recent approaches to characterize meso-scale maps, layer units, and cortical fields in the sensorimotor cortex of the living human brain and discuss their impact on theories of perception, motor control, topographic encoding, and cortical plasticity. Finally, we discuss concepts on the integration of small-scale processing units into functional networks that span multiple topographic maps and multiple cortical areas. Novel research areas are highlighted that may help to bridge the gap between cortical microstructure and meta-topographic models on brain anatomy and function.Food based dietary guidelines (FBDGs) are developed to promote appropriate nutrients intake. However, FBDGs may trigger higher exposure to some food chemical contaminants while recommending the consumption of specific food groups that are more contaminated than others. In some cases, the balance between benefits and risks is difficult to achieve. In the present article, we describe the long-term impact of some FBDGs on the exposure to food contaminants. Two examples of bioaccumulative substances were studied cadmium and PCBs. To this aim, lifetime dietary exposure trajectories were simulated for two populations the first representing the general French population, the second generated using virtual individuals following national FBDGs during their entire life. Exposure trajectories were then converted into lifetime cadmium and PCB internal concentrations using physiologically based toxicokinetic models. Finally, trajectories were compared with reference values to assess the health risk related to dietary exposures to cadmium and PCBs, for both simulated populations.
