Bipolar disorder is highly heritable and polygenic. The polygenic risk for bipolar disorder overlaps with that of schizophrenia, and polygenic scores are normally distributed in the population. Bipolar disorder has been associated with structural brain abnormalities, but it is unknown how these are linked to genetic risk factors for psychotic disorders.

We tested whether polygenic risk scores for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia predict structural brain alterations in 98 patients with bipolar disorder and 81 healthy controls. We derived brain cortical thickness, surface area and volume from structural MRI scans. In post-hoc analyses, we correlated polygenic risk with functional hub strength, derived from resting-state functional MRI and brain connectomics.

A naturally occurring loss-of-function mutation in the gene for C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5-Δ32) has recently been reported as a protective factor in post-stroke motor and cognitive recovery. We sought to examine whether this mutation also prevented the development of depressive symptoms up to 2 years after a stroke.

Participants were survivors of a first-ever mild to moderate ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack from the TABASCO prospective study who underwent a 3 T MRI at baseline and were examined by a multiprofessional team 6, 12 and 24 months after the event, including an evaluation of depressive symptoms using the Geriatric Depression Scale.

However, about 50% of heart failure shows heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, safe and effective interventions to improve SPPB for these types remain unclear. In addition, although a standard cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program for heart failure is widely used in Japan, whether this is sufficient to improve SPPB in elderly patients with ADHF remains unclear.

This study was to evaluate whether the addition of multidisciplinary physical interventions to the standard CR program would prove effective for improving SPPB among elderly patients with ADHF regardless types of heart failure.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health problem with high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to investigate patients who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during the pandemic and evaluate the effect of the pandemic on the clinical findings of these patients by comparing them with findings from a year prior.

Patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus between 2019 and 2021 were separated into two groups Patients diagnosed prepandemic and those diagnosed during the pandemic.

The number of newly diagnosed diabetes cases increased from 46 in the prepandemic period to 74 in the pandemic period. The number of cases diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in the clinic increased from 58.7 to 91.9%. We found that moderate and severe DKA rates from 18.5 and 14.8% to 23.5 and 22.1%, respectively. Besides, the average HbA1c was higher, while the average bicarbonate was lower in cases diagnosed during the pandemic period compared to the prepandemic period (p=0.048 and p<0.001, respectively). We found that celiac autoantibody positivity antibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (anti GAD) positivity, and islet cell antibodies (ICA), ICA and anti GAD positivity coexistence were higher (p=0.045, p=0.008, and p=0.007, respectively) among the patients diagnosed during the pandemic.

There is nowadays increasing evidence that a "sulfation code" exists which mediates numerous GAG functions. High molecular weight and inhomogeneity of GAG, however, aggravated detailed studies. Thus, synthetic oligosaccharides were urgently required. We will review here chemoenzymatic and analytic strategies to provide defined sulfated and anomerically modified GAG oligosaccharides of the HA type. Representative studies of protein/GAG interactions by (bio)chemical and biophysical methods are reported yielding novel insights into GAG-protein binding. Finally, the biological conclusions and in vivo applications of defined sulfated GAG oligosaccharides will be discussed.
