Diabetes is a risk factor for developing severe COVID-19, but the pathogenesis remains unclear. We investigated if the association of diabetes and COVID-19 severity may be mediated by inflammation. We also hypothesized that this increased risk may extend to prediabetes. Hospitalized patients in Singapore with COVID-19 were subdivided into three groups in a retrospective cohort normoglycemia (HbA1c ≤5.6%), prediabetes (HbA1c 5.7%-6.4%) and diabetes (HbA1c ≥6.5%). The primary outcome of severe COVID-19 was defined by respiratory rate ≥30, SpO2 ≤93% or intensive care unit admission. The association between clinical factors on severe COVID-19 outcome was analyzed by cox regression. Adjusted mediation analysis of C-reactive protein (CRP) on the relationship between diabetes and severe COVID-19 was performed. Of 1042 hospitalized patients, mean age 39 ± 11 years, 13% had diabetes, 9% prediabetes and 78% normoglycemia. Severe COVID-19 occurred in 4.9% of subjects. Compared to normoglycemia, diabetes was significantly associated with severe COVID-19 on both univariate (hazard ratio [HR] 9.94; 95% confidence interval [CI] 5.54-17.84; p  less then  .001) and multivariate analysis (HR 3.99; 95% CI 1.92-8.31; p  less then  .001), while prediabetes was not a risk factor (HR 0.94; 95% CI 0.22-4.03; p = .929). CRP, a biomarker of inflammation, mediated 32.7% of the total association between diabetes and severe COVID-19 outcome. In conclusion, CRP is a partial mediator of the association between diabetes and severe COVID-19 infection, confirming that inflammation is important in the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19 in diabetes.

Bacterial urine culture is recommended in dogs suspected of having urinary tract infection (UTI), but there is expense and delay in obtaining such results.

To determine the diagnostic performance of a rapid immunoassay (RIA) dipstick for detection of bacteriuria using voided urine from dogs with clinical signs of lower UTI.

Twenty-four client-owned dogs.

This RIA is promising for correctly identifying whether or not voided urine samples from dogs with lower urinary tract clinical signs have true bacteriuria in a rapid, inexpensive manner. Additional patients should be enrolled in a similar study to determine if diagnostic performance is robust in a large population.

To evaluate radiographic bone level (RxBL) at dental implants and its associated factors in Spain.

This cross-sectional study was performed by a network of sentinel dentists from regions of Spain. RxBL was defined as the distance from the implant shoulder to the first clearly visible contact between the implant surface and the bone. Radiographic measurements were performed by two trained and experienced periodontists. Implant and patient data were also collected. Descriptive, bivariate, discriminative and multivariate analyses were done.

A total of 49 sentinel dentists provided data 275 patients. Mean RxBL from 474 implants (5-13years) was 1.87mm (range 0.00-13.17mm). Statistically significant associations between RxBL and clinical output variables (bleeding on probing, oedema, plaque, probing depth, suppuration, keratinized tissue) were found. In the multiple regression analysis, statistically significant associations for RxBL were found for smoking habit, implant diameter, years of follow-up and type of prosthesis (p<0.01).

The role of these techniques for aiding and guiding the catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia, either as a complement or a surrogate of the electroanatomic map, has been rising in recent years. Integrating pixel signal intensity maps or wall thickness maps delivered from LGE-CMR or MDCT, respectively, into the navigation system has become a cornerstone for VT ablation procedures in a few centers of excellence around the world. The pre-procedure scar characterization offers some advantages, helping decide for the best procedure planning and approach; complete substrate identification and characterization, helping to focus electroanatomical mapping in regions of interest and also has a positive impact in procedure efficiency and outcomes. In the present article, we perform a review of the most practical aspects for using LGE-CMR or MDCT when a VT ablation procedure is planned, from the image acquisition to the integration into the navigation system, analyzing the current role of the LGE-CMR and MDCT for arrhythmogenic substrate characterization as well as for guiding VT ablation.A lateral flow immunochromatography strip test, based on antibody-gold nanoparticles specific for nervous necrosis virus (NNV), was developed for rapid, on-site detection of the virus in fish stocks. A monoclonal antibody against NNV was conjugated with colloidal gold as the detector antibody. A rabbit anti-NNV polyclonal antibody and goat anti-mouse IgG antibody were blotted onto the nitrocellulose membrane as the capture antibodies on the test line and control line, respectively. The reaction could be seen by the eye within 15 min and did not cross-react with the other viruses tested. The detection limit of the strip was approximately 103 TCID50 /ml and had good stability after storage at 4°C for 8 months. When brains of 70 naturally infected golden grey mullet, Chelon aurata, were tested with the strip test, the diagnostic specificity and sensitivity of the test compared to real-time RT-PCR were 100% and 74%, respectively. Therefore, the one-step test strip developed here had high specificity, reproducibility, and stability.
