This randomized controlled trial aimed to test whether women or men would be preferred with identical curriculum vitae (CV); and the impact of the career stage in the evaluators' choice.
A simulated post-doctoral process was carried forward to be assessed for judgment. Level 1 and 2 Brazilian fellow researchers in the field of Dentistry were invited to act as external reviewers in a post-doctoral process and were randomly assigned to receive a CV from a woman or a man. They were required to rate the CV from 0 to 10 in scientific contribution, leadership potential, ability to work in groups, and international experience.
For all categories of CVs evaluated, CVs from men received higher scores compared to the CVs from women. Robust variance Poisson regressions demonstrated that men were more likely to receive higher scores in all categories, despite applicants' career stage. For example, CVs from men were nearly three quarters more likely to be seen as having leadership potential than equivalent CVs from women.
Gender bias is powerfully prevalent in academia in the dentistry field, despite researchers' career stage. Actions like implicit bias training must be urgently implemented to avoid (or at least decrease) that more women are harmed.

Similarly, anti-Koch is highly potent against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. However, these drugs have been shown to impair male fertility. This study investigated the impact of HAART and anti-Koch, when used alone and co-administered, on testicular and sperm integrity. Thirty-two adult male Wistar rats were assigned randomly into four groups (n = 8), namely normal control, HAART-treated, anti-Koch-treated, and HAART + anti-Koch-treated. The doses of drugs were the human equivalent doses for rats. Administration was once daily per os and lasted for eight weeks. HAART aggravated anti-Koch-induced reduction in testicular and penile weights. In addition, anti-Koch also led to a distortion of testicular cytoarchitecture, disturbed spermatogenesis, and caused low sperm quality, including sperm dysmotility. More so, anti-Koch led to a significant elevation of uric acid and dysregulation of testicular lactate transport and glutathione content. These events were accompanied by enhanced lipid peroxidation and inflammation of the testicular tissue and reduced testicular and sperm DNA integrity. These adverse effects of anti-Koch were aggravated by co-administration of HAART. Thus, our results infer that HAART exacerbates anti-Koch-induced impairment of spermatogenesis and testicular and sperm toxicity through up-regulation of uric acid generation and dysregulation of lactate transport and glutathione system.Bivalve mollusks are continuously exposed to potentially pathogenic microorganisms living in the marine environment. Not surprisingly, these filter-feeders developed a robust innate immunity to protect themselves, which includes a broad panel of antimicrobial peptides. Among these, myticalins represent a recently discovered family of linear cationic peptides expressed in the gills of Mytilus galloprovincialis. Even though myticalins and insect and mammalian proline-rich antimicrobial peptides (PrAMPs) share a similar amino acid composition, we here show that none of the tested mussel peptides use a non-lytic mode of action relying on the bacterial transporter SbmA. On the other hand, all the tested myticalins perturbed and permeabilized the membranes of E. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/tak-243-mln243.html coli BW25113, as shown by flow-cytometry and atomic force microscopy. Circular dichroism spectra revealed that most myticalins did not adopt recognizable secondary structures in the presence of amphipathic environments, such as biological membranes. To explore possible uses of myticalins for biotech, we assessed their biocompatibility with a human cell line. Non-negligible cytotoxic effects displayed by myticalins indicate that their optimization would be required before their further use as lead compounds in the development of new antibiotics.Neuropeptide CCHamide-2 is a recently discovered peptide presents in many arthropods and it is the ligand of the CCHamide-2 receptor (CCHa2-R), which is playing a regulatory role in diverse physiological processes, such as feeding, insulin production, lipid metabolism, growth and reproduction, however, the function of this gene in aphids is still unknown. Here, we characterized and determined the presumed role of CCHa2-R signaling in the wingless pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed the expression levels of CCHa2-R transcripts in different development stages and different tissues, which indicates that the CCHa2-R expression was high in the first instar as compared to the upcoming nymphal instars and adult and was predominantly high in the brain. The CCHa2-R transcript levels were significantly up-regulated in starved aphids as compared to fed aphids. Moreover, RNAi knockdown by the injection of dsRNA-CCHa2-R significantly reduced the expression and also reduced their food intake in adult aphids, as revealed by electrical penetration graphs (EPGs) results. CCHa2-R-silencing was also shown to reduce reproduction but not survival in A. pisum. These observations suggest a role for the CCHa2-R pathway in the response of wingless parthenogenetic aphids to their nutritional status, and this role involves the regulation of the expression of CCHa2-R. Overall, the results of these experiments indicate that CCHa2-R plays a dominant role in the regulation of feeding in A. pisum.Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the leading common chronic liver disease affecting more than one-quarter of the population worldwide, but no pharmacological therapy was approved specifically. A synthetic peptide AWRK6 developed in our group based on the antimicrobial peptide Dybowskin-2CDYa was found to attenuated diabetes as a novel GLP-1 receptor agonist candidate. The effects of AWRK6 on MAFLD and its underlying mechanisms were investigated in this paper. In high energy diet (HED)-induced MAFLD mice, obesity and hepatic steatosis were alleviated by AWRK6 via intraperitoneal injection. The biochemistry measurements data indicated that the abnormal lipid metabolism was relieved and the glucose metabolism was improved significantly. Further, the phosphorylation of liver PI3K/AKT/AMPK/ACC was elevated significantly by AWRK6 treatment. Moreover, the effects of AWRK6 on lipid accumulation and insulin sensitivity in human cells were verified using oleic acid-induced HepG2 fatty liver cell model and insulin-induced HepG2 cells, respectively.
