The healthy and active lifestyle adopted by the elderly as a result of improvements in the standards of living may lead to an increase in the risk of injury. Comorbidities increase the risk of posttraumatic complications and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of chronic medical conditions (CMCs) on the risk of mortality in geriatric trauma patients.

All geriatric trauma patients admitted to emergency department over a 10-year period were retrospectively analysed. Patients were stratified by baseline characteristics, injury severity score (ISS), presence of CMCs, and in-hospital mortality. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine variables significantly associated with in-hospital mortality.

9455 patients included in the study. The median age was 74 (10) years and 57% of them were female. The presence of ≥1 CMC and ≥2 CMCs increased the risk of mortality 5.64 and 2.38 times respectively in mild traumas and 2.67 and 2.59 times respectively in moderate traumas. Age, ISS and penetrating traumas had a significant impact on the risk of mortality in all ISS groups. In severe traumas, only renal disease had an impact on the risk of mortality (OR = 2.58, 95%CI = 1.03-6.43,

 = 0.042). All other CMCs, ≥1 CMC, and ≥2 CMCs had no impact on the risk of mortality.

The presence of CMCs in elderly patients with mild and moderate injuries increases the risk of mortality. Such patients should be diagnosed and treated more quickly and aggressively during the prehospital process and in the hospital.

Structured searches were carried out on PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, and Web of Science databases without time and language restrictions. Two reviewers evaluated the studies, performed data extraction, and quality assessment by assigning scores.

A previous report showed that baicalin attenuates cisplatin resistance in lung cancer. However, its mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect and mechanism of baicalin on DNA repair and sensitivity of lung cancer cells to cisplatin. A549 and A549/DPP cells were treated with baicalin and cisplatin. link2 A549/DPP cells were transfected with XRCC1 and siXRCC1. Cell viability and DNA damage were detected by MTT and comet assay. Apoptosis rate and cell cycle were detected by flow cytometry assay. The expressions of Bax, Bcl-2, and Cyclin D1 were detected by western blot. XRCC1 expression was detected by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and western blot. Baicalin and cisplatin decreased cell viability in A549 and A549/DPP cells in dose-dependent manner. Baicalin enhanced the effect of cisplatin on promoting apoptosis, arresting cell on S stage and triggering DNA damage accompanied with the upregulation of Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) and downregulation of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and Cyclin D1 in A549/DPP cells. Moreover, baicalin promoted the inhibitory effect of cisplatin on XRCC1 expression in A549 and A549/DPP cells. This work employed multiple biophysical and computational methods to report the MMS mediated structural alterations in the DNA (MMS-DNA). Spectroscopic techniques and gel electrophoresis studies revealed MMS induced exposure of chromophoric groups of DNA; methylation mediated anti→syn conformational change, DNA fragmentation and reduced nucleic acid stability. MMS induced single-stranded regions in the DNA were observed in nuclease S1 assay. link3 FT-IR results indicated MMS mediated loss of the assigned peaks for DNA, partial loss of C-O ribose, loss of deoxyribose region, C-O stretching and bending of the C-OH groups of hexose sugar, a progressive shift in the assigned guanine and adenine peaks, loss of thymine peak, base stacking and presence of C-O-H vibrations of glucose and fructose, indicating direct strand breaks in DNA due to backbone loss. Isothermal titration calorimetry showed MMS-DNA interaction as exothermic with moderate affinity. Dynamic light scattering studies pointed towards methylation followed by the generation of single-stranded regions. Electron microscopy pictured the loss of alignment in parallel base pairs and showed the formation of fibrous aggregates in MMS-DNA. Molecular docking found MMS in close contact with the ribose sugar of DNA backbone having non-bonded interactions. Molecular dynamic simulations confirmed that MMS is capable of interacting with DNA at two levels, one at the level of nitrogenous bases and another at the DNA backbone. To evaluate short-term retinal and choroidal vascularity changes in the healthcare professionals after four hours of use filtering facepiece respirators (FFR).

This prospective study included 20 healthcare professionals. Oxygen saturation, pulse rate, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP), and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging were evaluated at baseline and after four hours wearing of FFP3 FFRs without an exhalation valve. Superior temporal artery (STA), inferior temporal artery (ITA), superior temporal vein (STV), and inferior temporal vein (ITV) diameter were measured from OCT images. The total subfoveal choroidal area (TCA), luminal area (LA), stromal area (SA) choroidal vascularity index [(CVI), the ratio of LA to TCA] were determined after binarization of enhanced depth imaging OCT (EDI-OCT) images of the choroid.

MRD-results were reported to clinicians in real time. Multivariate statistical analysis adjusted for known established risk factors did not indicate an association between MFC-MRD and overall survival (HR 1.00 [95% CI 0.61, 1.63]) with a median follow-up of 2.7 years. Knowledge of the importance of MRD status by clinicians and individualized decisions could have ameliorated the effects of MRD as an independent prognostic factor of overall survival.

We performed US assessments of the synovia of 22 joints.
