Female sand flies ingest sugar-rich solutions and blood, which are digested in the midgut. Digestion of nutrients is an essential function performed by digestive enzymes, which require appropriate physiological conditions. One of the main aspects that influence enzymatic activity is the gut pH, which must be tightly controlled. Considering second messengers are frequently involved in the coordination of tightly regulated physiological events, we investigated if the second messenger cAMP would participate in the process of alkalinization in the abdominal midgut of female L. longipalpis. In midguts containing the indicator dye bromothymol-blue, cAMP stimulated the alkalinization of the midgut lumen. Through another technique based on the use of fluorescein as a pH indicator, we propose that cAMP is involved in the alkalinization of the midgut by activating HCO3- transport from the enterocyte's cytoplasm to the lumen. The results strongly suggested that the carrier responsible for this process would be a HCO3- /Cl- antiporter located in the enterocytes' apical membrane. Hematophagy promotes the release of alkalinizing hormones in the hemolymph; however, when the enzyme adenylyl cyclase, responsible for cAMP production, was inhibited, we observed that the hemolymph from blood-fed L. longipalpis' females did not stimulate midgut alkalinization. This result indicated that hormone-stimulated alkalinization is mediated by cAMP. In the present study, we provide evidences that cAMP has a key role in the control of intestinal pH. The three most recommended preventive measures are wearing a mask, washing hands with soap or hydroalcoholic gel, and watching an interpersonal distance of at least two meters (3W) from other people. This study aimed to assess adherence to these COVID-19-related three preventive measures and its association with knowledge, attitudes, risk perception, and practices in Spain. The COSMO-Spain survey, based on the WHO Behavioral Insights questionnaire on COVID-19, was conducted in the general Spanish population using an online questionnaire (n = 1,033). Sociodemographic, knowledge, attitudes, practices, and risk perception variables were included. A multivariable logistic regression model was carried out to evaluate the factors associated with compliance with the three preventive measures. Half of the respondents (49.8%) were women with a median age of 45 (Inter-quartile Range, IR = 21) years. In the logistic regression, the factors associated with 3W compliance were being over 45 years; knowing about how COVID-19 spreads and wearing masks properly; appropriate attitudes towards COVID-19 (greater agreement with mandatory mask use); high risk perception (feeling that the coronavirus is spreading rapidly, being concerned about non-mask wearers), and adherence to other preventive measures against COVID-19, such as staying at home. Adequate knowledge, attitudes and risk perception are determinants of 3W compliance. Developing effective health education programs and frequent communication strategies are necessary, particularly for those who adhere less to preventive measures.Uranium is an important nuclear fuel, and the risk of human exposure to uranium increases as more and more uranium containing wastes enter into environment for the rapid growing of nuclear power. Therefore, the rapid, sensitive and portable uranium detection is a promising approach to effectively control and monitor uranium contamination. To achieve this goal, abundant oxygen- and nitrogen-containing groups were introduced to molybdenum oxide quantum dots (MoOx QDs) surfaces with dopamine (DA) modification. Due to the excellent coordination ability of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing groups with uranium, the obtained DA functionalized MoOx QDs (DA-MoOx QDs) showed a strong binding affinity to uranium and the sensitivity increased nearly 1000 folds compared with MoOx QDs alone. The limit of detection is 3.85 nM, which is higher than most of the reported nanomaterials. Moreover, the DA-MoOx QDs based method showed a high selectivity and uranium could be clearly detected under masking with EDTA even when the concentration of other metal ions is 100 folds higher than uranium, showing a great promising in uranium contamination control and monitoring.

Different types of hospitals exist in Jordan, and each type has its own leadership style. This might affect the nursing workforce in terms of quality of life and intent to leave.

This study aimed at (1) assessing the relationship between paediatric nurses' quality of life and intent to leave, (2) examining the moderating effect of the hospital type on this relationship, (3) comparing the quality of life of paediatric nurses working at ministry of health and the University-Affiliated hospitals and (4) exploring the determinants of nurses' intent to leave.

A cross-sectional, comparative and correlational design was used in this study.

A multi-site sample was selected from two types of hospitals in Jordan; the ministry of health and the University-Affiliated hospitals. A sample of 225 paediatric nurses responded to the brief quality of life questionnaire by the World Health Organization in addition to a group of sociodemographic and work-related questions.

Nurses' quality of life and intent to leave were negatively correlated. This correlation was moderated by the type of hospital. Nurses' quality of life was significantly different in the two types of hospitals. Both salary and nursing care model predicted paediatric nurses' intent to leave. The focus of this Minireview is to present a critical state-of-the-art vision of current nanofabrication approaches mediated by living entities (ranging from unicellular to higher organisms), in order to expand this knowledge and scrutinize future prospects. An efficient interfacial interaction at the nanoscale by green means is at reach through this approach.Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to quantify the effects of processing stages and interventions on the prevalence and concentration of Campylobacter on broiler carcasses. To comprehensively capture relevant evidence, six databases were searched using the keywords "Campylobacter" and "broiler chicken." The literature search yielded 10,450 unique citations, and after applying predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 72 and 53 relevant citations were included in meta-analyses for processing stages and interventions, respectively. As the two primary outcomes, log reduction and prevalence changes were estimated for each stage or intervention using a random-effects meta-analysis approach whenever possible. The outcome-level quality assessment was conducted following the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. The analysis revealed that scalding and chilling majorly reduces the prevalence and concentration of Campylobacter. Immersion chilling reduces the concentration regardless of chemical additives, but its effect on prevalence is not conclusive. The effects of carcass washing applications remain uncertain due to the inconsistency and imprecision of both outcomes. Defeathering and evisceration were identified as stages that can increase both prevalence and concentration. Both chemical and physical processing interventions provide limited efficacy in concentration and prevalence reduction. Major limitations of the review were inconsistency and imprecision at the outcome level and reporting issues and data gaps at the study level. The results are expected to inform quantitative microbial risk assessment model development and support evidence-based decision-making.This is the first of three articles based on articles published in the Health Information and Libraries Journal's Regular Feature (International Perspectives and Initiatives).
