The risk factors for the survival of elderly patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are multifarious. Here, we developed a novel clinical signature to serve as an indicator of prognosis in these patients.
Clinicopathological data were collected for 554 patients aged ≥ 60years who were treated for primary OSCC. Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival, and disease-free survival were the primary outcomes.
Multivariate cox regression analysis showed that high N stage, low hemoglobin level, low body mass index (BMI), and high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) showed a poor survival (P < 0.05). A nomogram was constructed with a c-index of 0.702.

The World Health Organization reports that the number of tinnitus sufferers is increasing year on year. Given the common use of mobile devices and the availability of applications designed to support patients in tinnitus therapy and reduce tinnitus severity, patients seeking help are likely to try this form of support. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile application in tinnitus sound therapy, in this case ReSound Tinnitus Relief™.
The study involved 52 patients hospitalized for tinnitus. All participants used the free ReSound Tinnitus Relief application for 6months. The application is based on sound therapy. Patients were advised to use the application for at least 30min per day, the sounds should not completely mask the tinnitus, and they should be listened to via a loudspeaker. The effects of the therapy were evaluated by means of standardized questionnaires for tinnitus severity the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and the Tinnitus Functional Index.
The study showed a reduction in tinnitus severity as measured by both questionnaires. The general severity decreased after the first 3months and again in the following 3months of using the application. In both questionnaires the biggest changes were observed in the subscales of emotions.
Results obtained here from standardized questionnaires indicate that the tested application may contribute to tinnitus reduction. However, it is advisable to conduct further research on the applicability of such technology in medical practice.

In domestic chick embryos, light exposure induces neuroanatomical asymmetries in the strength of visual projections from the thalamus to the visual Wulst. Consequently, the right visual Wulst receives more bilateral information from the two eyes than the left one. How this impacts visual Wulst's physiology is still unknown. This paper investigates the visual response properties of neurons in the left and right Wulst of dark- and light-incubated chicks, studying the effect of light incubation on bilaterally responsive cells that integrate information from both eyes. We recorded from a large number of visually responsive units, providing the first direct evidence of lateralisation in the neural response properties of units of the visual Wulst. While we confirm that some forms of lateralisation are induced by embryonic light exposure, we found also many cases of light-independent asymmetries. Moreover, we found a strong effect of in-egg light exposure on the general development of the functional properties of units in the two hemispheres. This indicates that the effect of embryonic stimulation goes beyond its contribution to the emergence of some forms of lateralisation, with influences on the maturation of visual units in both hemispheres.A widely distributed urban bird, the house crow (Corvus splendens), was used to assess bioavailable heavy metals in urban and rural environments across Pakistan. Bioaccumulation of arsenic (As), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) was investigated in wing feathers of 96 crows collected from eight locations and categorized into four groups pertaining to their geographical and environmental similarities. Results revealed that the concentrations of Pb, Ni, Mn, Cu, and Cr were positively correlated and varied significantly among the four groups. Zn, Fe, Cr, and Cu regarded as industrial outputs, were observed in birds both in industrialized cities and in adjoining rural agricultural areas irrigated through the Indus Basin Irrigation System. Birds in both urban regions accrued Pb more than the metal toxicity thresholds for birds. The house crow was ranked in the middle on the metal accumulation levels in feathers between highly accumulating raptor and piscivore and less contaminated insectivore and granivore species in the studied areas,. This study suggests that the house crow is an efficient bioindicator and supports the feasibility of using feathers to discriminate the local pollution differences among terrestrial environments having different levels and kinds of anthropogenic activities.
The mainaim of this study was to conduct an integrative review on the influence of the zirconia veneer thickness on the degree of conversion of resin-matrix cements.
An electronic search was performed on PubMedusing a combination of the following search items zirconia, thickness, veneer, degree of conversion, resin cement, light curing, and polymerization. Articles published in the English language, up to July 2020, were included regarding the influence of ceramic veneer thickness on the degree of conversion of resin-matrix cements. Randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies were also evaluated.
Of the 21 selectedstudies, 9 investigated the light-curing effect, while five other articles evaluated the ceramic translucency. Three studies evaluated the degree of conversion of the resin-matrix cement while four articles assessed the veneer thickness. Clinicians should consider the zirconia thickness on resin-based cementation since a higher veneer thickness can negatively affect the light irradiation intensity towards the dual-curing resin-matrix cement. Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is an inflammatory disorder that occurs due to the alcohol consumption, blockage of the pancreatic duct, and trypsinogen mutation. Strain QMT-12T was found to have morphological features typical of the genus Streptomyces. The predominant fatty acids included C181 cis9 (35.9%), Summed feature 6 (C182 cis9, 12/C180 a or C180 anteiso/C182 c) (30.6%) and C160 (16.3%). The whole-cell sugars were arabinose and glucose. The whole-cell-wall amino acids included alanine, aspartate, glutamic acid, glycine and LL-diaminopimelic acid. The menaquinones were MK-9, MK-9(H2), MK-9(H4), MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8). The diagnostic phospholipids consisted of diphosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidyl methyl ethanolamine, phospholipids, phosphotidyl inositol, phosphotidylinositol mannosides, and phospholipids of unknown structure containing glucosamine. The full-length 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain QMT-12T belonged to the genus Streptomyces and had 98.2, 98.1, 98.1 and ≤ 98.0% similarities to Streptomyces camponoticapitis 2H-TWYE14T, Streptomyces scopuliridis NRRL B-24574T, Streptomyces inhibens NEAU-D10T and other Streptomyces species with validly published and correct names, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain QMT-12T was closely related to Streptomyces inhibens NEAU-D10T. However, the average nucleotide identity value and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization value between strain QMT-12T and S. inhibens NEAU-D10T were 85.0 and 22.3%, respectively, well below 95-96% and 70% cut-off point recommended for delineating species. Based on its phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, strain QMT-12T (= CICC 11056T = JCM 33963T) represents the type strain of a novel species, for which the name Streptomyces liangshanensis sp. nov. is proposed.Probiotics are considered valuable to human health since they improve intestinal microbial balance. Probiotics are orally taken and affect the oral microbiota, which is one of the most important parts of the human microbial community. However, there is little information on the effects of probiotics on the oral microbiota. Caries-free preschool children (N = 6) with complete deciduous dentition were enrolled and given 100 g probiotic yogurt daily for 1 year. Salivary samples were collected every 6 months and then sequenced by Illumina MiSeq system based on 16S rDNA V3-V4 hypervariable regions. The data were analyzed to obtain the changes in microbiota profiles before and after the probiotic yogurt consumption. The α diversity analysis showed that salivary microbial diversity and richness were similar between the groups. The β diversity analysis showed that salivary microbial community structure changed with the consumption of probiotic yogurt. The variation of the microbial community composition was mainly due to 9 genera; for 7 genera (Campylobacter, Haemophilus, Lautropia, Bacillus, Catonella, Lactococcus, and Solibacillus) increased, while 2 genera (Gemella, and Streptococcus) decreased.
