The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors for hospitalization for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in Danish children.

This is a population-based cohort study with follow-up till 24 months of age. A total of 421,943 Danish children were divided into 5 groups based on gestational age (23-32, 33-35, 36, 37-41 and 42-45 weeks).

In adjusted Cox regression models, chronic disease, asthma hospitalization before the RSV infection and siblings were associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for RSV infection in all children independent of gestational age. Plurality was associated with a decreased risk in children born between 23 and 36 weeks of gestation, whereas young maternal age, maternal asthma, single parenthood, maternal smoking, being born small for gestational age, Caesarian section, male gender and day care were associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for RSV infection in term children. In postterm children, young maternal age, male sex, being born small for gestational age and maternal smoking were associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for RSV. Asthma hospitalization before the RSV infection and siblings were associated with the highest measures of increased risk of hospitalization for RSV infection independent of gestational age.

By 5 groups of gestational age, we provide estimates of the effects of 12 different factors, which can be regarded as add-on risk factors to those already known to increase the risk of hospitalization for RSV infection. Our study may help clinicians to precisely assess the risk profile in the individual child.

Viral suppression was achieved in 72% of the 191 children. No predictors for virologic outcome were found, underlining the need for routine viral load testing in resource-limited settings to achieve 90-90-90.We present the case of a male infant with congenital tuberculosis in a nonendemic setting complicated by hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, who was treated successfully with antituberculous therapy and corticosteroids. We review the pediatric literature concerning the unusual association of these 2 rare conditions. The vast majority of disease-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) mapped by genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are located in the non-protein-coding genome, but establishing the functional and mechanistic roles of these sequence variants has proven challenging. Here we describe a general pipeline in which candidate functional SNPs are first evaluated by fine mapping, epigenomic profiling, and epigenome editing, and then interrogated for causal function by using genome editing to create isogenic cell lines followed by phenotypic characterization. To validate this approach, we analyzed the 6q22.1 prostate cancer risk locus and identified rs339331 as the top-scoring SNP. Epigenome editing confirmed that the rs339331 region possessed regulatory potential. By using transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN)-mediated genome editing, we created a panel of isogenic 22Rv1 prostate cancer cell lines representing all three genotypes (TT, TC, CC) at rs339331. Introduction of the 'T' risk allele increased transcription of the regulatory factor 6 (RFX6) gene, increased homeobox B13 (HOXB13) binding at the rs339331 region, and increased deposition of the enhancer-associated H3K4me2 histone mark at the rs339331 region compared to lines homozygous for the 'C' protective allele. The cell lines also differed in cellular morphology and adhesion, and pathway analysis of differentially expressed genes suggested an influence of androgens. In summary, we have developed and validated a widely accessible approach that can be used to establish functional causality for noncoding sequence variants identified by GWASs.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of diode laser stapedotomy, through the functional results analysis.

A total of 179 primary cases of otosclerosis that had been operated on with a diode laser technique from 2004 to 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative, 1 month postoperative, and late annual follow-up audiograms (up to 8 years) were obtained in all the cases. Mean preoperative and 1 month postoperative pure-tone average (500-1000-2000-4000 Hz) bone conduction thresholds (PTA-BCs), air conduction (AC) hearing outcomes for 8 kHz and mean postoperative air-bone gap (PTA-ABG) closure were analyzed.

The mean preoperative (pre) PTA-BC was 24.22 dB (±8.7 SD) whereas the mean postoperative (post) PTA-BC was 21.11 dB (±9.1 SD). The mean preoperative 8 kHz AC was 56.41 dB (±22.86 SD) and the postoperative 8 kHz AC was 52.56 dB (±24.35 SD). A statistically significant improvement of the PTA-BC post and of the postoperative 8 kHz AC was observed. The 1 month ABG closure within 10 dB in 89.02% of the patients and within 20 dB in 97.69% of the patients was obtained with statistically significant stability over long-term follow-up. No major complications occurred in the series.

The use of diode laser with high power and short time exposure as setup can be considered a safe, precise, and useful tool in stapes surgery.

Poverty is correlated with negative health outcomes in pediatric primary care, and is emerging as a negative prognostic indicator in pediatric oncology. However, measures of poverty amenable to targeted intervention, such as household material hardship (HMH)--including food, energy, and housing insecurity--have not been described in pediatric oncology. We describe the trajectory of family reported HMH and income poverty at a pediatric oncology referral center in New England with high psychosocial supports.

Single site, prospective cohort study including 99 English-speaking families of children receiving chemotherapy for primary cancer. Families completed face-to-face surveys at two time-points (1) Within 30 days of child's diagnosis (T1) (N = 99, response rate 88%); (2) 6-months following diagnosis (T2) (N = 93, response rate 94%). HMH was assessed in three domains food, energy, and housing insecurity.

Twenty percent of families reported low-income (≤200% Federal Poverty Level) and at least one HMH priodes a quantifiable and remediable measure of poverty in pediatric oncology. Interventions to ameliorate this concrete component of poverty could benefit a significant proportion of pediatric oncology families. In the field of toxicological bioassays, the latest progress in Raman spectroscopy opens new research perspectives on a fast method of observing metabolic responses against toxic agents. This technique offers a multiparametric approach, providing an overview of the physiological changes that are caused by pollutants. However, physiological spectral fingerprints require complex chemometric methods for proper analysis. In this study, particular attention has been given to the elaboration of an "aberrant spectra" detection strategy to highlight the effects of arsenic on the bacteria Escherichia coli. JAK phosphorylation This strategy significantly improved spectra classification, consistent with a dose-response effect of the four tested concentrations of the metal. Indeed, the correct classification score of the spectra increased from 88 to more than 99%. The exposure time effect has also been investigated. The fine analysis of Raman spectroscopy fingerprints enabled the design of different "spectral signatures", highlighting early and late effects of arsenic on bacteria. The observed variations are in agreement with the expected toxicity and encourage the use of Raman spectroscopy for toxic element detection.A novel method relying on strain engineering to realize arrays of on-chip-integrated giant magneto-impedance (GMI) sensors equipped with pick-up coils is put forth. The geometrical transformation of an initially planar layout into a tubular 3D architecture stabilizes favorable azimuthal magnetic domain patterns. This work creates a solid foundation for further development of CMOS compatible GMI sensorics for magnetoencephalography. It is clear that harmful agents are targets of severe condemnation, but it is much less clear how perceivers conceptualize the agency of harmful agents. The current studies tested two competing predictions made by moral typecasting theory and the dehumanization literature. Across six studies, harmful agents were perceived to possess less agency than neutral (non-offending) and benevolent agents, consistent with a dehumanization perspective but inconsistent with the assumptions of moral typecasting theory. This was observed for human targets (Studies 1-2b and 4-5) and corporations (Study 3), and across various gradations of harmfulness (Studies 3 and 4). Importantly, denial of agency to harmful agents occurred even when controlling for perceptions of the agent's likeability (Studies 2a and 2b) and while using two different operationalizations of agency (Study 2a). Study 5 showed that harmful agents are denied agency primarily through an inferential process, and less through motivations to see the agent punished. Across all six studies, harmful agents were deemed less worthy of moral standing as a consequence of their harmful conduct and this reduction in moral standing was mediated through reductions in agency. Our findings clarify a current tension in the moral cognition literature, which have direct implications for the moral typecasting framework.Owned objects are typically viewed as non-fungible-they cannot be freely interchanged. We report three experiments (total N=312) demonstrating this intuition in preschool-aged children. In Experiment 1, children considered an agent who takes one of two identical objects and leaves the other for a peer. Children viewed this as acceptable when the agent took his own item, but not when he took his peer's item. In Experiment 2, children considered scenarios where one agent took property from another. Children said the victim could take back her own property from the perpetrator, but that she could not take an identical object belonging to the perpetrator. Finally, in Experiment 3A and 3B, children considered scenarios where a teacher could give a child either of two objects to play with-an object that the child had recently played with, or another object that looked the same. Children were more likely to say that the teacher should give the object recently played with when it belonged to the child, compared with when it belonged to the teacher. These findings are informative about the basis of judgments that property is non-fungible, and about young children's representation of ownership rights. They show that children's representation of ownership rights is not limited to principles protecting owners from being deprived. Our findings instead suggest that ownership rights are viewed as pertaining to individual objects.
