It is vital to identify substance use disorders (SUDs) in youths and adults early and accurately. Previous studies have investigated the validity and reliability of the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Youth Self Report (YSR) for other related anxiety, mood, and behavior problems. The present study tested if the CBCL and YSR substance use items can discriminate adolescents with versus without a SUD diagnosis accurately enough to justify clinical application within an evidence-based assessment framework. check details N = 422 outpatient adolescents (age 9-18) and their caregivers completed semistructured diagnostic interviews. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) models estimated the likelihood of having Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime (KSADS-PL) + SUDs based on substance use scores of CBCL or YSR. There was no significant difference in the accuracy comparing each informant used separately; CBCL showed incremental value above the YSR report when both were included in logistic regression models. CBCL and YSR substance items demonstrated diagnostic and clinical utility in identifying SUDs in adolescents. Findings suggest that Achenbach Scales could be a valuable intake instrument in detecting adolescents SUDs. A supplemental clinical vignette illustrates the clinical application of the study findings. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the distinctiveness of an aspect of LPF, namely, maladaptive self and identity function, from general psychosocial disability by evaluating its incremental utility over that of general psychosocial disability for personality disorder in adolescents. To this end, a measure of maladaptive self and identity function was administered alongside measures of general psychiatric impairment, peer problems, life satisfaction, and academic functioning in 2 samples of adolescents a community-dwelling sample (n = 379; Mage = 14.70, SD = 1.74) and a sample of clinically-referred adolescents (n = 74; Mage = 15.05, SD = 1.47). Using hierarchical regression analyses to test our hypotheses, and consistent with the results from studies in adults, our findings showed that maladaptive self and identity function incremented general psychosocial disability in the association with borderline features with similar magnitude for clinical and community samples when considered together and separately. Specifically, it tested whether FTP dimensions were cross-sectionally associated with personality traits, as well as if they predicted changes on those traits during a time when participants were transitioning to retirement. Participants from the Health, Ageing and Retirement Transitions in Sweden (HEARTS) study (N = 5,913, Mage = 63.09 years) reported on their FTP at the initial assessment and on their Big Five personality traits on six assessments 1 year apart. Latent growth curve models were fit to examine FTP as a predictor of level and change in the Big Five traits over time, with perceived time and opportunities included as unique predictors. Results found that broader FTP was associated with higher extraversion, agreeableness, openness to experience, and conscientiousness, but lower neuroticism initially. However, results indicated associations were stronger and sometimes only significant for perceived opportunities not time. Regarding FTP as a predictor of personality trait change, modest evidence was found that perceived opportunities predicted changes in neuroticism and openness over time. The present study extends past work by showing the importance of capturing different components of FTP when examining personality traits during older adulthood. Research needs to further explore the longitudinal predictive effects of FTP, focusing on more proximal assessments and how FTP changes during retirement. However, most human studies to date have adopted correlational designs, and findings across studies are inconsistent. This experiment (n = 115) pharmacologically manipulated men's testosterone levels prior to a mixed-gender math competition and examined basal cortisol (a hormone implicated in stress and social avoidance) and context cues related to an opponent's perceived status (an opponent's gender or a win/loss in a prior competition) as factors that may moderate testosterone's impact on competitive behavior. We test and find support for the hypothesis that testosterone given to low-cortisol men evokes status-seeking behavior, whereas testosterone given to high-cortisol men evokes status-loss avoidance. In the initial rounds of competition, testosterone's influence on competitive decisions depended on basal cortisol and opponent gender. After providing opponent-specific win-lose feedback, testosterone's influence on decisions to reenter competitions depended on basal cortisol and this objective cue to status, not gender. Compared to placebo, men given exogenous testosterone who were low in basal cortisol showed an increased tendency to compete against male and high-status opponents relative to female and low-status opponents (status-seeking). Men given exogenous testosterone who were high in basal cortisol showed the opposite pattern-an increased tendency to compete against female and low-status opponents relative to male and high-status opponents (status-loss avoidance). The model of excellencism and perfectionism (MEP) was recently developed to address this question by distinguishing the pursuit of perfection from the pursuit of excellence (Gaudreau, 2019). In this article, we report the results of the first empirical test of the core assumptions of the MEP. Across five studies (total N = 2,157), we tested the conceptual, functional, and developmental distinctiveness of excellencism and perfectionism. In Study 1, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with two samples supported the hypothesized two-factor structure of the newly developed Scale of Perfectionism and Excellencism (SCOPE). Study 2 provided evidence of convergent and discriminant validity from scores obtained from the SCOPE, and showed that, over and above excellencism, perfectionism was not associated with additional benefits (e.g., life satisfaction) or reduced harms (e.g., depression). Studies 3-4 focused on the academic achievement of undergraduates and showed that, compared to excellence strivers, perfection strivers more often aimed for perfect A+ grades (Study 3), but in fact achieved worse grades (Study 4). Study 5 adopted a four-wave longitudinal design with undergraduates and showed that excellencism and perfectionism were associated with an upward and a downward spiral of academic development. Overall, the results support the core assumptions of the MEP and show that perfectionism is either unneeded or harmful. In this article, we theoretically disentangle and empirically test two explanations for this effect. One possible interpretation for this effect is that offender feedback empowers the victim and that empowerment is the crucial prerequisite for reconciliation. An alternative interpretation is that offender feedback benefits the victim because it suggests that the punishment had an educational effect and initiated a positive "moral change" in the offender. Six studies-four scenario and two autobiographic recall studies (combined N = 2,134)-suggest that the positive effects of offender feedback on victims' justice-related satisfaction and willingness to reconcile cannot be reduced to empowerment. Empowerment and moral change rather constitute two independent mechanisms explaining when and why punishment facilitates the posttransgression process.
